The St Mary's Story

Raith Rovers

Youth Team
Its cold here on the south coast of england, the ferry leaves daily for the sunnier climates of France and i am stuck here,
having signed a contract the night before with Mr Rupert Lowe, Chairman of Southampton.
Its apparantly summer here, it is July after all. I am welcomed at the front desk by the PR delegation from the club who
direct me to the press conference in the media room at St mary's.
I sit down next to Rupert and shake his hand for the flashing cameras and busy reporters on their mobiles. The media frenzy
calms itself down for a moment and the chairman speaks. " This morning is the beginning of a new dawn here at St. mary's,
the new stadium is complete, the new manager is here and the new season will shortly be upon us, its a good time to be
involved with Southampton" he beams.

"Mr Parker?" the reporters voice calls "Whats your immediate plans now that you are here?" he calls. I sip some water from
the glass and look up, "My plans are simple, keep southampton up, build my own team and go from there, first on the agenda,
of course is to meet my players."

"Do you have any players you are looking to bring in?" the voice calls again.
"Yes, i have a short list of possible targets but the budget is tight here, what with the stadium being built and all.
I will talk with my chairman, and when we do make a move, you will be the first to know, trust me" i say, looking around.

After the initial welcoming has passed, i move to the training ground and meet the players who are back for pre-season. I sit
and talk with my team, getting to know my players and then send them off with Garry Pendrey, my assistant to warm up for the
morning session.
While they are warming up, i sit and study the player profiles i have and drink coffee. Damn its cold here.

I felt pretty short of options up front, especially since Lucas was only 16 but already had some promising trademarks that
made me feel he was there if i needed another striker. I got on the blower to my scouts and asked them to look around for an
available player at a cheap price. I only had £5.5M to spend and needed to use it wisely.
I decided to try and shrink my wagebill and talked to Garry Pendrey about the youth players and who should stay and who should
go.

Garry Monk was put on the transfer list as a free player also to try and spare up some needed funds for strengthening
The first week after that was just about building fitness and looking at players that could be added to my squad for the
coming season. My scouts came back with a few options that were looked into.

21.07.01
Bojan Djordjic arrives on a free transfer and Lee Borman arrives from Brigg Town for £100k. A friendly against FC Utrecht is
arranged for the 28th.
Before the week has ended, Billy McKinlay DMC (31), Giannis Margaritis GK (20), Steven Walker MC (26) and Gareth Buckley DMR (18)
arrive and add depth to my squad. A young brazilian forward called Ricardo (19) is also added depending on a work permit.

The game against Utrecht soon arrives, my team have been put through their paces and a formation has been worked out that will
allow me to defend and attack with pace and precision. All the players are looking fit and sharp and can't wait for the season
to begin. Teddy Holst MC (19) and Mosiah Blake SC (18) are added to the youth setup. Jay Lucas and Scott Mcdonald are called up
to the Australia under 21 side for their forthcomming matches along with Goalie Chris Sharpe.

The friendly starts with my players all looking to impress and get a place in the opening game of the season, the team lines up as
follows.

The first half was a tight game with Beattie grabbing the first goal with a great poachers goal from a rebound.
1-0 Southampton
Just before the interval, Pahars was bundled in the box and Telfer stepped up and made it 2-0 from the spot.
A great start for me personally as the whistle went for half time. There was not much i could say at half time to the
players, they were buzzing and looking sharp, taking their chances well and playing well defensively.
The second half started in the same way, James Beattie got his second on 54 minutes with a good low shot from 18 yards and
the grabbed his hat-trick on 72 with a good header from a Paul Telfer cross. Utrecht pulled one back on 79 minutes with a goal from
Dombi, thrashing it home from inside the box before Beattie grabbed his fourth goal on 86 minutes with the help of another Telfer cross

5-1 at full time was just the start i wanted and the first 11 had picked itself basically for the opener against Bolton.
Beattie was the deserved man of the match and had this to say after the game.
"it was a great team effort, the gaffer has brought in fresh tactics and ideas in training and it shows on the pitch. I hope that the goals
today are the first of many this season from me."

After the game, i spoke to the local papers and TV.
"Mr Parker, that was a fantastic first match in charge, how do you feel your boys played today?"
"Well, everyone played well, Beattie took his four goals superbly well and the boys in the midfield backed him up with class and determination, a great game"

"Has this changed your expectations for the coming season?"
"No, one game can't determine the season, it will be hard, 38 games to come"

There was a great atmosphere at the club that week, leading upto the first game. The squad was boosted by the news that Ricardo had obtained a work permit.
Garry Monk transferred to brighton on a free transfer.

The night before the season started, the players were rocked by the news of Shifty Petrescu's injury.

Rory Delap was brought in to cover at rightback other than that, the same first eleven were starting against Bolton.

Youth Team
yikes.
go back to the way the first part was written. That was superbly done.
If you want, just summerise what has already happened and take us to the beggining of 2004.
A brilliant start.

Raith Rovers

Youth Team
yeah, i was planning that, it seems more difficult to do a story from the past, i will update on the two seasons and then start from there

Raith Rovers

Youth Team
Its the first of July, pre season training starts today, and like last year, and pretty much every year, its raining. Our players welcomed their four new team-mates in Djibril Cisse, Antti Niemi, Radoslaw Kaluzny and Bjorn V D Doelen. Pre season was starting to go well, Dave Kitson joined from Cambridge for £26k. The squad were gaining fitness for the pre season tournament at St mary's. The semi final was against Nantes.

The game was on the 20th of July, the players were fit, the dressing room was buzzing and the usual transfer speculation and media rumours were hanging about the stadium. As i took to the dugout for the match, a reporter from the local paper interviewed me.

"You have spent nearly £10m this year, whats your plans for this year?"
"Well" i said, "We are planning to build on the success of last year, sixth was a great achievement, but i want more, we are in the UEFA cup this year too, i hope we can put together a great run and show that we are not relegation favourites"

The team against Nantes lined up as follows.

Niemi, Delap, Bridge, Gamarra, Williams, Kaluzny, Ilie, V.D. Doelen, Svensson, Cisse, Pahars.

We kicked off and started well, V.D Doelen opened his account within 12 minutes, latching on to a rebound from Ilie's effort.
We went in at half time, one goal to the good, a good performance from all involved.

The second half we were under pressure, Nantes grabbed a deserved equaliser on 66 minutes when Delhommeau headed in from a corner. It was looking like penalties until the 90th minute when Niemi clipped Vahirua's feet in the area and was red carded. Cudicini came on and was beated by Bonilla from the spot, 2-1 Nantes and the final whistle blew.

The changes were rung for the 3rd place play-off with Bochum. The team lined up as follows

Niemi, Petrescu, Benali, Powell, Gamarra, McKinlay, Davies, Walker, Svensson, Romeo, Djordjic.

Romeo made it 1-0 in the 23rd minute with an excellent header from Djordjic's cross. Davies sealed the tie on 49 with a low shot from Svenssons chipped pass. A good 2-0 win and a clean sheet.

The boys had a month of heavy fitness training to contend with before the league kicked off against Barnsley at St. Mary's

Young striker Sebastien Gregorie arrived for £2.3m from Liege and was added to the reserve squad for the season.

The league kicked off with a 4-1 hammering of Barnsley, Cisse netting on his debut with a brace from Svensson adding to Ilie;s strike. That was followed up with a 2-2 draw at Blackburn with Ilie again on the scoresheet alongside Pahars.
We were starting to roll at this point, confidence was high and the expectations were growing amongst the fans, could we finish higher than sixth? the chairman seemed to think so by suggesting we challenge for the title

We ended August with a 1-1 draw with Chelsea at St Mary's with V D Doelen grabbing the goal.
September saw me sitting in Monaco watching the draw for the cup, Brotnjo of Bosnia was the destination. I smiled at this draw contemplating the next round already, although, i was taking nothing for granted.
We grabbed another 3 points from Coventry at St Mary's that week before flying to Bosnia. The first euro cup game from Southampton for...........well, ever!
We started of in some style, Cisse making sure everyone knew who he was by hitting a hat-trick in a 5-1 win.

Soon we were back to earth though, losing 4-3 at Spurs, Svensson hit 3 but it was not enough as we were 4-1 down at half time. We got back to terms the following week, 4-1 winners against Ipswich, Kaluzny getting his first for the team. This was followed up by a 3-1 win at WBA.
September saw the additions of Lee Chun-Soo, Sami Sakka and Igor Biscan and saw Beattie move to Liverpool (part ex with Biscan) Lee Borman and Billy Mckinlay all leave for pastures new. A pre-contract agreement for young brazilian prodige Leonardo, a defender from Flamengo, was signed. He was due to arrive in December, scouts stating a work permit would not be a problem.

Two scouts were also sent to check the progress of Arjen Robben of Groningen as his proposed move to PSV fell through due to lack of funds. Their loss i thought.

Our next two games were both won 3-1, away to Boro' and home to Everton, we were sitting in 2nd by this time, all things looking rosy and the supporters singing my praises on radio phone ins.
The return leg of the Uefa cup was next up, Brotnjo tightened their defence and only conceded 3. The draw was made for round 2, Brann of Norway, another tie that was, "win-able" to say the least. The first leg was at home, ending 2-0. Great goals scored by Romeo who was looking good now. The players minds must have been focused on Europe that week as we lost 3-1 at Newcastle and then struggled to a 1-0 win at home to Fulham.
We also lost the return at Brann 1-0 but went through anyway, only to draw Parma in the 3rd round. Before that game, we went to leeds twice in 3 days and lost 2-1 and 3-1 in the league and cup respectively. this was followed by a 4-3 defeat at Old trafford and a 3-0 win at Charlton to cement our place in the top 4 of the league. Shifty Petrescu decided that he would rather move to the sunny climbs of South Africa and play for Sundowns, we got £250k, he got a broken ankle one month later and retired from injury. Fair deal?? hmm.
Parma won 2-1 in our away leg of the cup, we were happy never the less with the away goal and felt we could scrape through if we played well enough. We followed up with a 3-0 win over Bolton and a 1-0 loss to West Ham, both at home.
The thursday night of the cup tie, it was raining heavily, the groundstaff working over time to ensure a playable surface. My players were used to these conditions, it was Southampton after all.
A fantastic performance saw us win 3-0 and 4-2 on aggregate, the media now speculating whether we could win the cup or not.
Sarcastically i said yes we could, my chairman and my 30,000 fans seemed to think i was serious, "crap!"
We lost 2-1 at Highbury before scoring 12 in three games against Liverpool (3-0), Blackburn (4-1) and Chelsea (5-1) We had now moved to second in the league and were worth every moment of it. December ended brightly, a 2-1 win at Sunderland and a 3-3 draw at Barnsley capped a great year. The signing of Arjen Robben for £3.4m only adding to the adjulation. My team didn't look like losing and we made it through January with 5 wins, 18 goals scored and 2 conceded. We had made it to round 5 of the FA cup in the process and drawn Man Utd at Old Trafford in the 5th round. A manager of the month award for January was just rewards for the teams display. The club was on a high, finances were good, a profit of at least £1m a month before wages of £225k were deducted. AEK Athens were the opponents in the UEFA cup 4th round, however there was a month of domestic football to negotiate first. We lost against Ipswich and drew against Tottenham before coming away with a draw in the FA cup at Old trafford. We thrashed Everton 3-1 away before the replay against Man U. a 3-2 win, down to 10 men also, and a quarter final tie against Man City away.
Before the cup game we pulled in Sebastien Kehl, Chris Riggott and Fausto Rossini for a combined £20m over 2 years.
Athens proved to be a tough test at St Mary's, we scraped a 1-0 win to take to Greece. A 1-1 draw at home to leeds was enough to see us move to 2nd in the league.
A comfortable and surprising 3-0 win against Athens sees us take our place in the last 8 of the UEFA cup against PSG.
Man City were next, easily seen off 4-1 as the southampton train was gathering steam. PSG were beaten 3-1 at St Mary's and 1-0 in France, with a 3-2 win over fulham sandwiched inbetween. A 4-0 win over Newcastle ended another fine month.
Club Brugge were the opponents in the semi-final of the cup with us going away in the first leg and winning 2-0 before winning 3-2 in the FA cup semi final against Arsenal.
Two 3-2 defeats on the trot were not the perfect way to build up to the return UEFA cup tie against Brugges.
The players were in for fitness training that week to builed up their levels for the run in to the league and cups. We were in one final and looking good for another one but couldn't afford to take it for granted.
We lined up against Brugges as follows

Niemi, Delap, Bridges, Gamarra, Williams, Biscan, Kaluzny, V.D. Doelen, Cisse, Svensson, Ilie.
A fantastic team performance destroyed Brugges by half time as we went in 3-0 up. A further 2 from us and 1 from Brugges in the second half gave us a 7-1 aggregate win and another final. The league had slipped from our grasp but we were guaranteed a top 3 place anyway.

a 1-0 win against Charlton a 3-3 draw against Arsenal and a 1-1 draw at Anfield game us 3rd place before we played 2 cup finals in 4 days. First up was the FA Cup against Chelsea.
It started badly as John Terry netted within 4 minutes. However, a second half comeback gave Southampton their first silverware.

4 days later in Copenhagen Deportivo were the opponents for a tight and tense Uefa cup final. 0-0 at fulltime, extra time started and up stepped Bernardo Romeo to ever cement his name in Southampton History.

"Svensson played in the free kick, Romeo outjumped the keeper, Goal for Southampton, they win on the golden goal ruling"
The stadium erupted, i raced onto the pitch and hugged the goalscorer and celebrated into the night.

The youngsters were played in the final two games of the season which we lost 4-1 to Man U and 3-2 to Sunderland. Jay Lucas netted his first two goals for Southampton to add to his claims for a first team spot as the season ended on a high.

Mosaih Blake and Teddy Holst left on free transfers while Francis Benali, Kevin Davies, Paul Williams and Paul Jones all departed for a combined total of £2.2M

Adrian Ilie finished top scorer with 26 goals and the top rating of 8.09 and scooped player of the year.
Anders Svensson got 27 assists

Raith Rovers

Youth Team
The players were all pretty nervous today, it was the first time Southampton had been in the Champs League, even now we weren't guaranteed a place, Skonto Riga stood between us and millions of pounds of prize money.
The team were boosted by some new faces while some old faces left for pastures new.
Sidney Govou, Lucien Mettomo and youngster Pascal Beugals joined us and Carlo Cudicini left for Bologna.

The first leg was away, Skoto tried to defend and we knew we had to break them down

Southampton lined up as follows

Niemi, Delap, Bridge, Kehl, Mettomo, Kaluzny, Svensson, Van Der Doelen, Biscan, Rossini, Robben

Arjen Robben gave us a 21st minute lead after we had squandered good chances beforehand. It stayed that way until half time.
With us being full-time it started to pay dividends as we had greater fitness and broke them down with regular ease, however, it was not until we brought Lee Chun-Soo and Adrian Ilie on in the 72nd minute that we capitalised. Chun-Soo made an immediate impact in the 73rd minute with a goal, which was followed by Kaluzny (80), Ilie (87) and Robben again in the dying seconds.
A great 5-0 win.

Coming next..................Community Shield, the return leg and the league, courtesy of Southampton FC TV.
