STEWART SENT BACK BY RANGERS

Rangers have been forced to temporarily abandon their pursuit of Manchester United midfielder Michael Stewart.

The Scotland international has been training with The Gers after being informed he can leave Old Trafford.

But his chances of impressing Ibrox manager Alex McLeish have been scuppered as he is not allowed to play in friendly matches.

McLeish is disappointed he has been denied the opportunity to assess the 23-year-old in a match environment but does retain an interest in the midfielder.

However, McLeish admits Stewart will have to accept a wage cut if he wishes to clinch a move to the Scottish giants.

"We've hit a snag with the red tape," said McLeish. "He can't play for another club unless it's a charity match or a testimonial.

"I could bring him in on loan but SFA rules dictate you're only allowed one player on loan at any given time.

"I don't want to commit to that just now before looking at other areas of my side.

"The rules should be relaxed due to the financial situation in football but at the moment they stand.

"It looks like he'll need to go back to United and try and sort something out with them.

"He has been out of the first team picture there and he might have to make a sacrifice.

"He'd be on lower wages at Rangers but that's something he might have to do."

Stewart has two years remaining on his current contract with United but is not part of the long-term plans of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Dutch land Scottish star

Den Haag have completed the signing of Scottish international Jamie Smith.
The 23-year-old has spent the last few days on trial and he has done enough to seal a permanent deal.

Smith has penned a one-year deal with an option for another two.

The Scot was a free agent after his contract at Celtic expired.

Smith is Den Haag's fourth major purchase this summer following the arrivals of Gill Swerts, Sjaak Polak and Jimmy van Fessem.

Kleberson determined to stay

Kleberson insists his future is at Manchester United as he wants to emulate fellow Brazilian Edu's achievements in England.

The South American midfielder, on Copa America duty with his country, was hugely disappointed in his first Premiership season, clearly failing to adjust to the pace and intensity of one of the world's best leagues.

A couple of injury setbacks did not aid Kleberson's cause but he has a major task ahead of him in proving his World Cup-winning pedigree next term.

"My immediate future is at Manchester United and I don't think of anything else," he stressed.

"Everything is ahead of me.

"The worst that could possibly have happened has already happened.

"The settling in time is over and now I am looking forward to the future.

"I think I've adapted well to a new life. I took advantage of my injuries to learn about the English culture and lifestyle."

Kleberson hopes to follow in Edu's footsteps after the Arsenal man also struggled in the early days of his Premiership career before cementing a regular place in the champions' line-up.

"I know Edu's problems," he added. "He has told me about his struggle.

"It was similar to mine in the way he arrived in a new country and then got injured.

"But now I look at Edu and he's one of the big stars in the Arsenal team. His story is my inspiration."

Meanwhile, one United midfielder definitely on his way out at Old Trafford is Michael Stewart.

The 23-year-old is negotiating a pay-off from The Red Devils, reportedly around £400,000, to secure a move to Rangers.

"I'm just waiting for final confirmation from Manchester United," Stewart told The Daily Record.

"We've been talking over the course of the day and we're pretty close to agreeing a settlement figure.

"I've made it clear all along I'd be willing to make a big sacrifice to get this move to Rangers, just not too big."
