Chinaglia confirms Lazio bid
Saturday 25 March, 2006
Former Lazio star Giorgio Chinaglia has confirmed he is making a serious bid to take over the club from unpopular President Claudio Lotito.
“We have received no response to our request for a meeting, but even if Lotito refuses, my group will wait until an opportunity arises. Even if that means hanging on for two or three months, we won’t let go of this,” said Chinaglia.
The player who helped take the Biancocelesti to their first Scudetto in 1974 has been claiming for several months that he is leading a conglomerate of local businessman who wish to buy out the club.
Lotito, who has been the subject of a number of protests from the fans inside the Stadio Olimpico, in turn suggests that there is no concrete offer behind this rumour.
“I am convinced that I am in the right here,” continued ‘Long John’ Chinaglia. “We have done everything we had do, going to the Consob to prove our stability and bring in funds from overseas, so all we can do now is wait. This is not a bluff, as many of you might think. Do you think I’d leave my home in America to come here without the certainty that it’s a serious bid?”
Chinaglia has already held the post of President in 1983, although the club was relegated two years later, and assures he has a plan for the future.
“We have a list of names including players, directors and marketing strategists who can suit our Lazio. We aren’t leaving anything to chance. As for the money we’ll pour into the club coffers, I can tell you that not even my children’s children could manage to spend all of that sum.”
