The Poker Thread

Hey.

I am just curious if we have any regular poker players here, I have been playing online a bit lately and with mates, so heres a thread for all you players to talk about scenarios, advice on how to play certain situations, big wins, tough losses and past experiences as well as maybe organise something if there are enough people intererested.

Anyway, I recently bought a book called Kill Phil by Blair Rodman and Lee Nelson (recently won the Aussie Millions).

Anyway, to start it off, who is everyones favourite player on the WTP if they watch it?

Mine is Men Nguyen or known as "Men the Master"

and Lee Nelson

Here is a wonderful play of his a few weeks ago

Blinds 50/100 - Lee Nelson raises to 225 - Jason Gray calls. Mark Vos calls. Noah Jefferson calls. BB calls.

Flop Q-5-4. (two hearts) BB checks - Lee checks - Jason bets 1000 - Vos folds TT - Noah calls, BB calls - Lee pushes all-in. Jason Gray folds AA. Noah thinks for 6 min and folds 54 (bottom two). BB folds high flush draw. Lee is "rumoured" to have 76 for the up and down. No one can ever be certain

Anyway, I suggest to everyone they get Kill Phil, wonderful book for any skill level.

I watch the World Series of Poker on ESPN every once in a while, other than that I'm not much of a poker buff.

I consider myself pretty good because I have a good grasp on the odds and everything and I know that sometimes you just don't get the cards. But that being said, I'm sure someone who has a solid background in the odds and plays frequently would take me for everything I had.

My personal favorite player is of course Phil Ivey. Aside from his great fashion sense, he's also a notoriously crazy gambler. I heard he lost a quarter million during a tournament that he won because he kept betting people what the next card would be.

I play a bit, but to be honest dont have the money to throw around that much. If you can keep your head in poker and not get carried away, then its really quite easy.

Takes a minute to learn, a lifetime to master.

It isnt easy, nothing like blackjack, there is never an ideal situation and being conservative over time wont win you all the time.

When I play a hand, the first thing I ask myself is do I bet or raise and then how much if yes. I never limp in, I try and win the pot early and if I can, steal the blinds. Position means everything however and I NEVER play crap hands, no matter how cheap the blind is. However when I raise a hand, I always raise the same depending according to my position, usually 25%, 25% and 30% im early, middle or late no matter what hand, it makes me tougher to read but my opponent knows I have something. Convservative players will fold a better hand then me more often, and aggressive players will call and I can take their chips :)

Anyway, I think a lot of new players misread their hands. For example, id rather a 87 suited connector than an AQ. The AQ can be dominated I believe, and in a situation against a AK AA KK QQ its screwed. Look, pit 87 against all combinations of AA, KK, AK, AQ and AK suited, the AQ has a 32% chance to win as opposed to a 27% to win.

So as you can see, its not easy man, thats a very common mistake I used to make, and I prefer the 87 over an AQ, its a tough hand to play.

Anyway, I play about 65% of the hands I am dealt, such as

any ace
any pocket pair
all suited kings, most unsuited kings
queens down to q-6
Carlos*s down to j-5
most low suited connectors
most low suited one gap connectors

I read heaps on poker, I love it seriously, I am addicted. I goto casinos and play a bit, but I play online a lot , in the last month ive made about 1000dollars just playing on sit and go tables. My best tip to any new player is to read, because seriously when I started purchasing books I started looking at situations I had never thought of in ways that since I have encountered and won on. I started off conservative but now I am a tight-aggressive player, I raise most of the time and I try and become the first person to the pot, because in my time I have noticed they usually win however the best thing about poker is there isnt only one way to play and while I dont like limping in, a lot of people do it and win big.

i'm a poker fan

i read a bit on the internet about it, but not in the hardcore research league of rob

but the fact of the matter is if i met him in an online poker room i'd take him for everything he's got (H)

best part of poker is ripping your mates of all their money then blowing it on beer with them 20 minutes later

Rob, I basically play the exact opposite of you. Oh sure, I can play a dominant hand or a solid hand like an Ace or some connectors strong, but I believe Texas Hold 'em is a game in which any combination of cards, no matter how crappy can win the hand. And that is why if I can see a flop for cheap, I'm going to. You never know, your 8 and 4 non suited could turn up two 4's on the flop. If I can see the flop cheap, I want to see that flop; I'm not stupid about it, I'll fold if it's not worth it, but the flop is what makes good players. Doyle Brunson won the WSOP on a 10 and 2 two years in a row.

And heads up I honestly believe I can take anyone down.

I play poker with some mates around once every two weeks... It's not serious though, we screw around and we never play with real money but it's good for a night of laughs :)

Oh dont get me wrong, I play crap hands. Depends if the chips are real money I wont, if I am playing for a pot though I will do it, but I will raise and make others believe I have a good hand.

Aggressive poker is winning poker.

And I agree on the any hand strategy. A few weeks ago with mates I was short stacked, and gone. I was drawn a 7 and 2 and was blind. Someone raised so I went all in right away trying to scare people off from playing me with this hand while stealing the blind, no one played be except the last guy and I thought I pulled off something wonderful until he called. Thankfully the flop was to my amazment, talk about poker gods. 2-2-2. Ended up finish 3rd in this after looking like being the first to go, I was happy.

So as you said, anything can happen.

EDIT:

And the thing about taking anyone down, my theory is to take the chips away from the bad players as much as you can, because no matter how good a player is, if you have a good chip position you can dominate and win despite your skill as you can basically buy pots, and force expert players to fold better hands.

Been playing Holdem way before it became so popular.

I don't watch poker on tv these days but in my opinion, the best player ever has to be Shifty Harrington.

But my favorite player was Johnny Chan.

PS: Rob, Men Nguyen is an asshole.

That would be my post, aside from that I never really got into it when poker came back 2/3 years ago.

I play a lotta poker, and I'm pretty sure I'm better than everyone here. easily.

and Gus Hansen has to be my favourite... also Daniel Negraneu cuz of the Canadian factor, but other than that he's an annoying dick

usually only play with friends every week or 2, but I've played in one tournament before, which was 2 weeks ago... only about 20 people, but meh. top 3 got money, I came 4th :( small stack went all in, I was big blind and it wasn't much of a raise, and I had an AQ... I also went all in to try and get the other guy who called out of it, but the asshole calls all in with pocket 3s :( I didnt catch anything, so I went all in blind the next hand and lost :p

Help?

The biggest problem of course, is that since we live scattered across the world, we aren't online at the same time.
