Such a sporting event deserves a separate thread, don't you think?

So it all starts today. Personally, I’m looking forward to ski jumping, Nordic and alpine skiing. But it does not change the fact that I'm going to watch whatever I can. During the Olympics, even figure skating is extremely exciting. Any predictions about who will light the Olympic flame? I bet that everyone's first thought was Putin...

Sochi was selected on July 4, 2007. They've had seven years to prepare and would up with this.

We actually don't get live coverage of the ceremonies here because NBC sucks though a lot of Americans are just Carlos*ing Canadian feeds of it. NBC shows it at night and does really bad commentary over the parts they actually show, when the countries they deem unimportant come out they cut to ads or soft focus pieces (because, you know, it's not like America has people from every part of the world or anything). Oh the soft focus pieces. NBC could find a sad story at the opening of a new frozen yogurt store that paid good wages.

They probably see them as potential hosts for the summer games next bidding cycle and felt like hosting the winter games would hinder that.

Or wanted an excuse to bulldoze some stuff. Probably that.

Putin also wanted to stick it to Georgia after 2008, since they probably would have known about it before it even started at the opening ceremony in 2008.

Also, #Sochiproblems! That never happened @ EURO 2012. Even Ukraine did a better job of hosting smthing over a month than Russia. The only one's who are probably used to it are the Independent Olympic Athletes.

As for the opening ceremony, Russians didn't present anything special. But the entire Olympic complex looks amazing (and of course, is functional because most of the arenas is located in one place) just like the fireworks at the end.

I love the hypocrisy of the media companies condemning Russia's homophobia while they rake in huge dollars advertising during their Olympic coverage.

Even better is that they're confusing Ukraine and Russia in a crusade to protect fluffy animals. There were similar issues of culling strays in Ukraine around the time of EURO 2012. Also, are FEMEN going to make an appearance at Sochi?

It's a bigger deal at the Olympics because Americans and Australians are paying attention to this and they tend to LOVE dogs. Not that other places don't, but there are Americans who will straight up stab a person for hurting a dog.

You should see the reaction on TV here, Olbermann has dedicated his opening segment to it two nights in a row.

NBC has pretty much talked over the entire opening ceremony and cut to commercial every 5 minutes.

I'm with you here. My gf has converted me big way in that regard. I still eat meat, and I shoot animals on farms to predict livestock and to eat meat (if you can't kill an animal, don't eat meat). But animal cruelty is something all together different.

Because Moscow and St petersburg dont have adequate ski slopes.

This is big news in Vancouver, the previous hosts and also a very gay friendly city, everyone is talking about it. Would love to see Canada retain the hockey gold, though more likely with the women than the men I fear.

Winter Games host cities are always weird because you need mountains. You can't host it in fucking St. Petersburg.
