The Group G final match situation (potential drawing of lots!)

France qualify with a win, and any winner in the SWI-KOR match.
Switzerland and Korea both qualify with a France loss or draw.

If Switzerland and Korea draw, it gets slightly complex.

First of all, Switzerland's +2 goal difference would beat out Korea's +1, so Switzerland automatically qualifies. France has a goal difference of 0.

If France wins 1-0, Korea advances on goals scored.

If France wins by at least 2 goals, France advances on goal difference.

If France scores at least 3 more goals than Korea in ANY winning effort, France advances on goals scored. (For example, if Korea draws 0-0, France must score 3 goals in a winning effort. If Korea draws 1-1, France need 4 goals, and so on.

There is ONE scenario where the drawing of lots would be used. That would happen if:
1) Korea draw with Switzerland
2) France defeats Togo by one goal
3) France scores two more goals than Korea did in their match

So if Korea draws 0-0. France must win 2-1 to ensure the drawing of lots. If Korea draws 1-1, France must win 3-2, and so on.

It isn't too complex really. That's why i posted it, so people could see the situation without having to think too much!

They "draw lots" because there might be a situation where three or all four teams are tied. The rules need to be consistent, so there's no point of saying "flip a coin if two teams, draw lots otherwise".

Oh, and i left out the situation where France and Switzerland end up level. In that case, they would draw lots to determine the winner of the group, and the other team takes second place. Just add 1 goal to everything i said about France, and that would put them level with Switzerland.

drawing lots its really unfair.. why not just let the team with fewer number of yellow cards go through? this way promotes fair play :jambo:

It's unfair, but it's part of the game. If two teams are pretty much exactly equal, then it really doesn't matter which one goes through, so just draw lots.

If France and Korea don't like the rules, they shouldn't have come to Germany :)

Plus yellow cards are really subjective...referees have different styles, and are generally not consistent with their cards. Some refs use the cards as a last resort, some like to give them out early and often to set the tone. I would rather see it come down to a drawing of lots instead of the referees deciding who goes through with their cards.

The previous results were:
TOG 1-2 KOR
FRA 0-0 SWI
TOG 0-2 SWI
FRA 1-1 KOR

then if you think about it if the matches were to end like this by today:
TOG 1-2 FRA
KOR 0-0 SWI

Who would advance? Korea or France?
