No comments on Kazakhstan yet? suprising. Anyway not too great in the 1st half. I don't think the formation worked for us, but far better in the 2nd half. Great for the goal difference to get five, although conceding was a shame even though it doesn't really matter.

Got a good feeling about wednesday night now. I'd like to see starting:

James
Brown, Ferdinand, Upson (If Terry is still out), A.Cole
Wright-Phillips, Lampard, Barry, Walcott
Heskey, Rooney

Don't know what you guys reckon but i think Lampard over Gerrard at the moment. Lampard has played reasonably well the last couple of games and i wasn't convinced by Gerrard last night. Worth having him on the bench though.

England 5 - Kazakhstan 1

I was interested to see Fabio starting with a 4-3-3, but I think its obvious that the guys need more time to make that formation work. I thought that in the first half the players didn't do a lot wrong overall, apart from some sloppy passing at times, and it was down to some resolute Kazakhstani defending that saw the score at 0-0 at half time. England were firmly in control of the first half though, and that was important.

Second half saw a change to 4-4-2, and as expected we played nice football with that formation, and the movement and passing was a lot better. Good substitutions at the right time by Fabio finally finished Kazakhstan off.

Good team performance overall, although having JT missing did seem to make the defence look a little shaky with Upson taking his place.

Heskey was massive. He got hold of everything, and his supply to other players was telling. He deserved a goal, but even so his contribution was immense.

Rooney had a good game especially when he was moved to the middle, where he is most potent.

Theo was a constant threat down the wing too but made too many wrong decisions throughout the game. He will learn though.

Gerrard looked rusty. Lots of misplaced passing and a lack of focus at times, but we all know he can play better than that.

So 3 wins out of 3 and top of the group.

Very happy with Fabio. Considering the time he spends with the squad, he is doing more than fine.

Ashley Cole played a fantastic game, winning everything that threatened his side of the pitch. He made one schoolboy error, and for that the morons in the crowd decided to boo him every time he touched the ball.

What sort of idiot fan boos their own player when they make ONE mistake is beyond me. I looked to where the boos came from, and lo and behold it was the same retards that it always is, which leads me to conclude it was a club V club issue once again.

These same 200 or so pricks usually boo anytime any Chelsea player gets the ball. Small minded twats who disgraced what was a fine performance by the rest of the England fans.

Did he work/click well(or atleast better than he has in the past) with Lampard?

he struggles for England.....I think he loses his sense of responsibility, runs around aimlessly and tunes out of England games very quickly. Most of the time, he looks like he's in no-man's-land. I think he's in there purely on reputation. During England games, he comes off, to me atleast, as a rather boring player to watch....very very predictable.i.e. very lathargic and extremely unimaginative. There are more enthusiastic midfielders available....they need to be (atleast) considered for a full 90 minutes......NOW!!!......not in a meaningless 4-1 blowout after the group has been won/qualification clinched or a 6-0 friendly win 3 weeks before the opening group game.

Newbie, I thought they linked up well on many occasions during this game. They both knew where they were meant to be and they stuck to that. I think the signs were definately there that the pairing can work fine.

I think Gerrard still has the right to bomb forward whenever the opportunity arises, and he did that on a few occasions. I think the role that he has been given by Fabio maybe stifles his natural instincts a bit, and thats why he seems aprehensive at times. He also looked a little rusty too. He hasn't been available for the last couple of games though so I think that explains a lot.

All in all I think the midfield worked well against Kazakhstan, so to me it's looking positive.

Then again I have never had the belief that Lamps and Gerrard cannot play together. Two of the best midfield players in the World cannot play together? Thats just rubbish. All thats needed is a good enough coach to find a way to make it work, and I think Fabio will crack it.

A lot of damage was done by McClaren while he was in charge, and I don't just mean missing out on the Euro's. A lot of confidence was hacked from a lot of players too thanks to McClarens formations and tactics, and it will take some time to re establish that confidence. I can see it returning under Fabio though. I think the difference is definately noticable already.

I have no complaints about anything that the squad are doing right now. I think Fabio is doing a very fine job with England. I see with every game that passes, a new belief from the players, and I like the football that Fabio wants them to play. Still a way to go of course, but I never thought anyone could turn things around as quickly as Capello has.

I agree McClaren did a poor job but i think the side looked quite well balanced in that run of 3-0 wins over Israel, Estonia and Russia at Wembley. Although some costly defeats and that home draw with Macedonia did the damage. One thing i wish Fabio would consider that McClaren did do towards the end is playing Micah Richards at RB. I think the guy is an excellent player and linked up really well with Wright-Phillips when they played. Hopefully Owen will get back into the side too (not necessarily a starter, but in the squad). Hoping we don't see Lampard and Gerrard together in the centre either, both in the squad but not both starting.

Previously Sven had a good reputation and we expected better from him but Fabio has even greater experience with some of the best; Real Madrid, AC Milan, Juventus. I think whatever happens we should stand by him, if we can't win under him then i don't think we can win. Although i think we will qualify this time, everyone already looks more confident.

Anyway wednesday, i think Ashley Cole is out so i guess put in Wayne Bridge and it'll be ok.

Thats a fact. His passion is there for all to see. He prowls the touchline screaming instructions and directing everything. He jumps from his seat to berate or congratulate the players throughout the entire game. He see's what might be going wrong, and he makes small changes here and there until it's all working. He behaves more like a club manager during games, with the passion and determination of someone who loves what he does. The players thrive on it that's obvious. They need to see their coach as involved as he gets during a match. They are used to that at club level and must welcome it when playing for England too.

I like the way that he tries something new or different and tinkers with it from the touchline, to fine tune it looking always to improve things. He also has a plan B just in case things don't go so smoothly. The second half invariably sees the players return to the formation and tactics that they feel most comfortable with, and the boys seem to be thriving on it and also seem to be enjoying their football once more. Marvellous stuff indeed.(Y)

Sven or McClaren were not like this.

Anyhow another great result once again. 3 goals to be proud of, sublimely created and wonderfully executed. Rooney was masterful of course. His 2 goals were so cool. Heskey once more was amazing. His supply for Wazza's first goal alone was pure class. Gerrard's goal was pure Gerrard, fed superbly by Rooney and finished off with a sublime right boot.

Lamps and Gerrard interchanged positions smoothly throughout the match, which shows how hard they have been working on their game, and for the second half Lamps played deeper in support of the back four, while Gerrard played higher up the field. Both doing a damn fine job.

With a makeshift defence we were bound to be opened up a few times, and we were. Bridge did well considering that he has only played 8 minutes of Premiership football so far this season. He looked a little rusty but as always gave 100%. Rio was huge and had a good game too.

I think Wes was a bit off for this game though. He made a few errors of the type that he used to make, and did not look as comfortable as he has recently.

For the Belarussian goal though, (which was a beauty by the way), I would like to know why he ducked down to allow the ball to reach the goalscorer instead of heading it clear. That was a strange thing to do, and has puzzled me all day.

So, 4 wins out of 4, and we are scoring goals again. It sure is looking good so far. Lets hope it continues and gets even better. We have never in our history won the first four games of a qualifying campaign, so well done to Fabio and well done to the squad. (Y)

England squad to play Germany:
Carson, Hart, James
Bridge, Davies, Johnson, Terry, Lescott, Mancienne, Richards, Upson
Barry, Carrick, Downing, Lampard, Gerrard, Wright-Phillips, A Young, Agbonlahor, Bent, Crouch, Defoe, Walcott.

Nice to see some younger players involved. Mancienne is a suprise but it's a big opportunity for him and i hope he gets a chance to play. I think Agbonlahor and Hart are worth a place as well.

Injury list:-

A.Cole
J.Terry
S.Gerrard
J.Cole
W.Rooney
R.Ferdinand.

Well, it gives the young players a look in I guess, and I hope they rise to the ocassion, but thats six big players missing for us right there, so I don't expect this to be an easy game for us at all.

It should still be entertaining though, but I'm not expecting a win.

Reserve Team
Germany squad to face England:

Goalkeepers: Rene Adler (Bayer Leverkusen), Tim Wiese (Werder Bremen)
Defenders: Marvin Compper (Hoffenheim), Arne Friedrich (Hertha Berlin), Andreas Hinkel (Celtic), Per Mertesacker (Werder Bremen), Marcel Schaefer (Wolfsburg), Serdar Tasci (Stuttgart), Heiko Westermann (Schalke)
Midfielders: Thomas Hitzlsperger (Stuttgart), Jermaine Jones (Schalke), Marko Marin (Borussia Moenchengladbach), Simon Rolfes (Bayer Leverkusen), Bastian Schweinsteiger (Bayern Munich), Piotr Trochowski (Hamburg), Tobias Weis (Hoffenheim)
Forwards: Mario Gomez (Stuttgart), Patrick Helmes (Bayer Leverkusen), Miroslav Klose (Bayern Munich), Lukas Podolski (Bayern Munich)

So a weakened Germany too, although that attacking quartet looks very impressive. Also Hoffenheim have started the bundesliga well. I think this could go either way. I'm hoping both managers let the youngsters play though.

More news: Joe Hart is now doubtful and Gerrard is out too (although that has been pointed out) Is anyone being called up in place of Gerrard?

I would have preferred to see Özil getting called up than Weis. Compper is OK as our defenders haven't been that strong this season.

I expect a draw or a lucky win for us as we play at home.

can't believe he didn't get the call up ... he's been brilliant so far this season ...

It's probably another page in the book of DFB kissing Hoffenheim's ass.
Seriously one of Hoffenheim's managers is the son of the DFB or DFL president.

politics? that's a shame ... but, if Özil continues playing like he has been, they won't be able to ignore him ...

I can't say a lot about who deserves to be called up for Germany as i haven't seen the bundesliga, but it seems good to me that the Hoffenheim players are being rewarded for their start to the season. I can understand Frings not being included for a friendly, but I don't get why the manager doesn't seem to want him for other games. I think playing him and Ballack together works well.

We seem to have suffered from injuries, so here's the updated squad.

England squad to play Germany:

Carson, Robinson, James
Bridge, Davies, Johnson, Terry, Lescott, Mancienne, Richards, Upson
Barry, Carrick, Downing, Bullard, Parker, Wright-Phillips, A Young
Agbonlahor, Bent, Crouch, Defoe, Walcott.

I think Jimmy Bullard deserves to be in there, I'd rather have seen O'Hara called up and get another under-21 involved instead of Parker. And now Hart is out I think Carson should start in goal. James is old now and we aren't going to learn anything new by playing him, and Carson can make up for his mistake against Croatia, which I have to say looks nothing compared to what Gomes did on Saturday.
