VOTE: Who should replace Roy Hodgson as England manager?

    Harry Redknapp

    Jurgen Klinsmann

    Arsene Wenger

    Slaven Bilic

    Glenn Hoddle

    Sam Allardyce

    Eddie Howe

    Alan Shearer

    Alan Pardew

    Gareth Southgate

That's an awesome list. I vote Wenger! This won't happen though.

Too bad there are no managers available who are qualified to take England to the next level. It is a real shame because England have a lot of talented young players coming through. Is there any candidate better than even Hogson available? At least Hogson made England qualify to 3 finals!

England did not made any progression since Hungary beat them 3-6 at Wembley in 1953.

How the F can Alan Shearer be in frame for the job when his only achievement is getting relegated with Newcastle in 10 games?

Poor manager but you gotta admit he was key to change German NT football mentality, they became open minded.

Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce will be confirmed as England manager in the next 24 hours, Sky sources understand.

So the FA thinks a guy that has never tasted success in his life make England succeed? Not going to happen. Allardyce is a poor candidate for the job and is not qualified for the job. His best achievement has been to avoid relegation. He is not a winner. He is the same kind of manager as David Moyes and Moyes at least reached the FA Cup final. Allardyce did nothing. The FA is fucked up.

I can see why they made this decision because Sam's remit is rescuing sides which have hit rock bottom in terms of performance and moral and that is precisely what this England side is. Whether or not it is a wise appointment depends on what our ambitions for England are. If we just want England to get further in tournaments and not embarrass ourselves then Sam is a decent choice - he will drill the basics, work on the shakey defence, get is organised and more solid. As someone pointed out, no way would an Allardyce team have conceded those two soft set piece goals against Iceland. He's obviously a big upgrade on Roy (a garden slug would be a big upgrade on Roy and less ugly too) and also I prefer him to someone like Neville or Southgate. However, the really special international teams, the ones which catch the eye and which win tournaments with anything other than bus parking football, are the ones which have a clear plan and philosophy, a defined and thought out playing style which all the players are on board with (and to an extent chosen for) and eminates from the manager. Allardyce is clearly not the man to do this. However, if our remit is that he has to be English, the talent pool is very small. Eddie Howe is literally the only English manager who manages like that and appointing him would be a huge gamble - such managerial appointments (young men with a 'project') can go very badly wrong a la AVB. This is why I wanted Brendan Rodgers, as a compromise candidate who is close enough to English and also can manage like that and has experience. I hope the Allardyce contract is only for two years and we will not be shy about assessing him properly after the WC - we must never again cut a pass for a bad manager by saying 'oh well, he was unlucky, it was a tough group' like we did for Roy two years ago. If you don't get England out of a tournament group (and I would say at least one knock out round) you must not stay in the job. I don't feel Sam will be a disaster but I hope he is just a short term fix and the heir apparent will make himself known over the coming two years be it Howe or someone else.

We had to hire an Englishman. We could have gotten away with a semi-Englishman like Rodgers or an adopted Englishman like Klinnsman but no more foriegn than that. The FA is trying to put all kinds of pressure on the clubs to promote more English talent and all that gets washed away it they themselves hire from abroad.

Looks like David Moyes is strong favourite to take over Sunderland btw. Must be his last chance to salvage his reputation.

He promised his wife that he will retire by 2017. I am sure he doesn't want divorce.

A team in the calibre of England with the talented players should aim to win. Not get past the group stage. Sam has not proven that he can work with stars.

Even Moyes would have been a better candidate for England.

England does not have the quality to win without other teams shitting the bed and getting very lucky.

Some managers have won stuff consistently with mediocre teams but very few can do that.
