The definition of a true fan

Fan is short for fanatic. People abuse this word way too much, especially here in the United States.

Some people like Deisler (not the player) from the Bayern thread that calls himself a true fan. I have to ask my fellow american friend, how can he be a true fan when he knows nothing, first about futbol/soccer/football, and has no connection with the club whatsoever. It's people like him that abuse the word way too much and go out of their way to prove something is isnt and will never be real. He is a pitiful boy, thats for sure... but I do respect some people that do LOVE clubs that are in no way connected to them, because they've shown and proven that they are true fans. But sometimes its hard to distinguish the fanbois and the true fans.

As for myself i'm only a fan of ONE club, and thats Universitario of Peru, I will live and die for this club. I like other clubs like Barcelona and Inter, but I couldn't call myself a true fans of these two clubs since I have no emotional attachment to either club. Its not like when Universitario loses, I literaly get depressed... but when Barcelona and Inter lose, its ok, its just another game. Same can be said for clubs where Peruvian players play in like PSV and Bayern. I like these two clubs for only one reason, because of Peruvian players. I'm not going to sit here and try to make a fool out of myself, like Deisler has in the past, and try to prove something that can never be proven. Once Farfan and Pizarro leave their respective club, I will probably not bother with the clubs anymore as I will be following their current clubs. But what I dont understand is why cant people understand this? Why do they feel offended that i'm not a "true fan" of these clubs, especially when they're not either. Its just silly sometimes to try to argue with kids... but sometimes you have to just to stimulate their brain (Deisler needs alot more help though).

Another thing I can't understand is punks who support other NTs rather than their own, like pitiful Deisler, who is an American but would rather support Germany. Thats just pitiful.. truly truly sad. As far as NT's go, for me, Peru is first above everything, then comes the US NT. I've followed the US NT throughout the qualifying games traveling to Columbus OH, Hartfor CT, Foxborough MA & Washington DC to support the US NT. That can be said, is a TRUE fan.

In the end, I piss on pitiful boys like Deisler who will never have a life, because he depends on this site for his lifelyhood.. and the fact that he's a fake futbol/soccer/football fan in general pretty much says he's an absolute idiot.

You ******* idiot, if someone declares themself as a fan, then they are. It's up to that person to decide for himself, not for you to go ******* around calling other people fake fans. It doesn't ******* matter if someone is emotionally attached, if they feel they are a fan, then they are.

I already posted this on another thread on the same subject awhile ago.
In Portugal we have a saying that you can change wife, political party, life style but never a football club. It´s hard for me to understand how you can stop supporting a club and change your preferences to the rival.
I understand that in some countries the level of the football competitions is very low and that the motivation to support the national clubs is non existent. Because of that, it´s understandable that you "adopt" a foreign country to be target of your football afections. Changing it ,constantly, according to their success isn´t.
I support a hometown/national club. Because of family influence and because i´ve been following the club since im a kid and since i developed a conscience. I feel indentified with the club, pay my monthly associate fee and go to the stadium ocasionally when i have a chance. I could never change club even if it isnt a very sucessfull one and the only way you can gloat about it, it´s when you win your regional derbies. Even so i could never change my preferences and start supporting another club.
Other then that, i admit that i sympathize with some foreign clubs. Not because of their success but because they have countrymen in their ranks. I wish them all the success and i enjoy when they achieve status abroad and represent my country adequatly but i just sympathize with their clubs. I could never support their clubs the same way i support my hometown/national club.
The name of the club i support is Académica, a midtable team in the portuguese Betandwin League.

When it comes to Barca im their fan since 1990 when they signed Hristo Stoichkov who is Bulgarian as me. Im a fan of Liverpool since 1991 when my father gave me for my birthday a shirt on which i read L.F.C with a dragon on it and the sponsor was CROWN PAINTS. And McManaman is the player who increased my support for them. Even when Barca and Liverpool had their hard years not winning anything, i supported them from the bottom of my heart. And last year this support was rewarded with CL cup and La Liga title.

I was born into an Arsenal family.My dad started taking me to Arsenal when i was 5 years old.We would go to all the home games together,with me standing on a milk crate in the north bank.This was long before the days when replica shirts were worn,so i always had a red and white scarf and a rosette...(anyone remember rosettes?).Now i dont remember actually being at all fanatical about Arsenal at all.Being the eldest son,i guess my dad thought i would naturally follow the Arsenal like most of my Uncles aunts and cousins.One saturday when i was about 7,Arsenal were to play Chelsea at Stamford Bridge,and my dad was going to take me with him for my first away game.That was it.....after going through the turnstiles,i walked up the steps to the terraces and as the pitch and the rest of the ground came into view,(in those days Stamford Bridge was a dump by the way),I felt something inside that i had never felt at Highbury,i couldn't describe it then, but it was a feeling excitement,and i remember actually trembling as i stood there.The teams came out and as my dad and uncles cheered the gunners on,i found myself watching the Chelsea players in their royal blue kits.I had been watching Arsenal for 2 years but they never made me feel like this.I knew that this was the team i wanted to support for the rest of my life.I didn't tell my dad anything about this at all of course.So on the Saturdays when Arsenal were playing i would find an excuse not to go with my dad.As soon as he was out of the house i would get myself on a bus to Chelsea and scream and shout for them instead.I never did scream and shout at Highbury,i just never felt that excited.
So,i have followed the Blues ever since.Through thick and thin.To relegation and back up again.Through the good times and the bad.I have been with my club a lot longer than any of the players and longer than any of the management and coaching staff,and a lot longer than the owner and chairman.This is my club,not theirs.I will still be supporting Chelsea when all these guys have gone elsewhere,people come and people go but the fan always remains.My dad is still pretty mad at me about the whole thing and my conversion happened over 30 years ago.Both my daughters are Chelsea fans and they assure me that they will never switch sides,and when i watch them at Chelsea games,i believe them.

A true fan has an emotional attachment to the team they purport to be a "fan" of. I am willing to declare myself a true Manchester United fan, even though I live in Australia, because I have this emotional attachment to the club. I like their style of play, I like the way the club as a whole is managed. A true fan will stick with the club of their choice through everything. I felt the pain of losing the FA Cup final in May against Arsenal. I enjoyed the win against Chelsea a few weeks back. I have mixed emotions about Roy Keane leaving, and feel the sadness of George Best's death.

A true fan is willing to have their club's logo tattooed onto their skin. It shows that the club will be theirs forever (unless, of course, the fan decides to have the tattoo lasered off).

Also, because of my global position it’s very hard for me to ever travel and actually watch the games. I have done this once, I travelled to Barcelona to watch a game, and it costed me €500. So, since I’m a student, I can’t afford to spend half of my monthly stipends on stuff like this.

I did the same thing two months ago to see my team for the first time. Great experience, even if the entire trip ended up costing me nearly $1500 (i'm also a student).

Nope not true at all.My club are a huge part of my life but my family come first.I think some people overstate how much of a fan they are.I wouldn't want a Chelsea tattoo thanks.Anyone who gets a tattoo of their team must be retarded.It might seem like a good idea when you are 14 or 15 years old,but when you grow up and mature ,you will regret it for sure.Anyway nobody has to justify to anyone else why they might support a club.That is their business and good luck to them.
I've read news stories about "fans" who killed themselves after their team lost.These people are not fans ....they are just mentally retarded people who happen to follow a team.
When you actually get something worthwhile in your lives besides football,then you will put it all into perspective.Either that or you will die a lonely old man one day.

I am also a fan of Manchester United. I admit that when I first watched United's game, I didnt know much about the team, I only heard of Cantona's and Beckham's name. However when I watch more and more they play, I start to like and love the style they attack and the spirit of never-give-up. So I keep on watch their games until now and forever. I will always support the team no matter they are #1 in EPL or #20 in the league.

A true fan feels sad when the team play badly, but still give full support to the team.

A true fan is also willing to have the club's logo tattooed into his heart.

Yep, I am serious. It's something I've thought about for aaages and one of only two I'll ever get (the other being when my Aussie Rules team wins a Premiership).

If I said I was going to get a "Fuck off Fat Frank" tat, then I wouldn't be serious.
