Tactics 101

Hm, the tactics look good.

I'd use Xabi Alonso as the defensive playmaker, and always use him as the deepest midfielder. I see you're using Sissoko as the deepest in some of your formations, and I'd switch them so that Sissoko is the one running forward. That way, you can use Alonso as a sort of Pirlo playmaker. He always get's the ball deep, then creates scoring chances from the deep midfield role. Set his forward runs to "rarely", run with ball "mixed" and his long shots and through balls to often. Set his passing to the middle left (between short and mixed), and his closing down to the middle right (between normal and often).

This way, you'll have a complete midfield player who's always playable, who can create scoring chances for you, and a very good first defender. You'll also give Steven Gerrard more attacking freedom, and won't have to depend on him to defend. You can even put him higher up in the field, as a "clean" attacking midfielder, so that he can get more shots off towards the goal. I'd set Sissoko to close down maximum, tackle hard and mix his forward runs. This way, he'll be the sort of battling midfielder, saving Steven Gerrard and Alonso a lot of energy to use their technical skills.

I'd also set the focus passing thing to down both flanks, and have Cisse and Vicente crossing the ball towards the target man (Crouch).

As I said, set Crouch as the target man, and set your wingers cross aim to "target man". Crouch's jumping stat is 20, so you'll no doubt want to exploit that. Also, get him to hold the ball up for maybe Gerrard or the wingers. Morientes will probably also work well as a target man, being strong in the air.

You could also experiment with two strikers if you're having trouble scoring.

Hope this will help you ;)

That tactic is so much alike mine for Sporting, both in home and away games. I have the mentality even more attacking. And I lack the same problem as you. Away it seems I do great...but at home the goals seem to lack. But my last game I won 7-0 home...this can be a change, I will see as the season goes on what will progress.

I remember that one of those games in the start of the season (4th btw) I won Naval 2-0, with Kirk scoring on the 91' minute, and Alex scoring a penalty on the 94'. I had to put 2 strikers and Alex and Gasbarroni totally wingers. Yeah it bugs me...and I did about 20 shots, 10 on which on target...

Well I can say some advice, my opinion about something in that tactic. The tactic at home, I would take out that MC ---> AMC for Xabi Alonso. And I would put him with normal mentality, for him to do both attacking and defensive functions. Have you tried putting Vicente going to the wing? I'm sure he does better there.

If I'd manage L'pool I'd try to build the squad around Gerrard. I'd let him penatrate to the striker position as the computer seems to have problems defending against that sort of tactic and he has rather good finishing. Believe me it worked with Cahill for me at Everton and I'm often having big scores against big teams aswell.
He scored about 70 goals for me in three seasons which made him the all-time top-goalscorer of Everton, a remarkable achievement for a midfielder.

Yeah it's the principle on which the famous tactic Diablo is based aswell. But it's far less effective nowadays, which is nice cause it was close to cheating and it got boring aswell.

damn right, i remember playing my own "altered" version of the diablo with Valencia, i got stupid ratings of Aimar. (8.00+ every game, every season).

Nowadays its just good for late runs into the box, but thats still useful to be fair.

How do I have to set my defenders if I get many goals from crosses?
Both of my central defenders (Bordon and Krstajic) are 188cm tall, over 16 at heading and marking and the side defenders are pretty much the same on marking. The problem is, even if the defensive line is set on deep and all of my defenders' mentality is defensive, my side backs get caught too forward and the oposite wingers have all the time in the world to cross the ball in my penalty box. I usually must have a lot of luck if I don't conceed a goal in that situation. My goalkeeper is pretty good too: Aerial Ability - 17; Command of Area - 19; Communication - 19; Handling - 18; Reflexes - 19; Anticipation - 19; Concentration - 18; Decisions - 17; Positioning - 19;

well the problem is probably on the side backs then...are they in a defensive mentality? without forward runs and/or other options that might send them upfield?

Forgot about the forward runs, setting them to rare now.
If I put the closing down on will they reply back more often?

Also you can set your play width to "Wide". That way your full backs will "force" the opposition inside the field instead of letting them get around on the outside.

Do you concede many goals from headers inside the box? Because with CBs as Bordon and Krstaijc that shouldn't really be a problem. Pretty strange as they both have good jumping skills and are strong.

I always play wide.
Yeah like that, headers in the box. My defenders look like they won the ball but then a forward attacks from 2 meters behind and always heads the ball. It's just a matter of luck as I said.

But Filipe's tips are working until now.

How can I assign a player's new position as FR or FL? The position exists, cause when I move the players up they appear as FR/FL but on the New Position tab there's just Striker to select (from the front), so I don't know how to make them play there. Any suggestions?

yeh sorry i didnt really reply to this on MSN Theo. But i'd agree with Daz, training players as AMR or AML should do the job.

Anyone got any tips on playing with three centre backs (and no full backs)?

I've never really seen a team playing with three centre backs, so any tip will be useful, like how should I play my midfielders and wingers when playing with three at the back? Should they close down? High or deep back line?
