Top teams...?
Well, after promotion, if I start playing against Top teams, I always use the same tactic. 4-2-1-2-1. 4 defenders, 2 dm, 1 cm (or acm), 2 wingers and a striker. Only that does by itself. Normal mentality, low creative freedom, mixed passing, low tempo (maybe high at home, to pressure them), normal width, 2 ticks down defensive line, normal pressure (2/3 tick above) normal tackle to everyone except to dmc and cm, that should be hard.
Also player instructions should be done with precautions. Left and Right-backs shouldn't go in front too much and should cross 3/4 field...unless you have one of those who actually is really good...central defenders super defensive, no freedom, everything on rarely, but going in front to corners. 2 very strong DM. One more defensive than the other...acting like a third central defender...CM shouldn't act as both things...but both should be defensive. CM play attack/defense (very much like Lampard/Essien in Chelsea) Then the others in front should be pointed for counter. Wingers need to have some speed...and be sure to have a great finisher in front...actually the whole front line has to pressure, especially the wingers...
I always manage to create a tactic from this thing...doing later some arrangements...and the results are often quite good...so I can't complain...
Just judge your players, their abilities, the others...and a good tactic can be made.
