Tactics 101

I have never understood having players like Mutu going back into defence in this game.

Personally think you would be much better having them with no arrows, but closing down a lot more, stopping full backs attack.

Well that's why I put the arrows on both Mutu and Camoranesi, but I'll take them off and make them close down more.

Not too much though, dont want them out of position.

This game is all about moderation. Anyway your individual player instructions are far more important than the overall team ones.

It's okay Tom, the Shifty school of messing up is play the game on very fast and text only, only rarely making substitutions in the middle of halves.

If you put defenders all the way at the extreme of "ultra defensive" they hang around the six yard box having tea with your keeper. And King's tactic is way too flat for my tastes. Now granted, I'm not the greatest tactic creator, although I'm alright. It's just that I get frustrated when I don't win every game, so I'll ditch a relatively successful tactic that doesn't treble for a downloaded one that will. I hate not winning. Even one game.
Believe me i want them to have tea with the goalkeeper because if they don't i loose like 8-0 to japan and if they do, i sometimes go in draw with japan 2-2 or i loose to them like 2-1, but i change the mentality of my midfielders and strikers so that helps alot.

Play more narrow, a little less quicker, still quick though and play direct while your back 4 pushes up for India. Or play a little wide and if you do, put passing down the flanks.

Due to the lack of quality your players have this is the way you will win games. Also dont play 5 at the back, play a 4-4-2, with one of your defenders just holding the midfield.

I would have other option for you King. As said before by someone, FM2006 is a game of "midfield", and after playing some seasons, I have to say that it is true. Weaker teams? 4-5-1...sort of 4-2-3-1. Something like this...

Moutinho and Alves aren't where they should be in the first pic, but whatever. And sorry that it is in portuguese.

Just saw India's team...wow...they suck...

As you can see, the team tactics are pretty much giving you the game. However, for you, I would upper the wasting time. Mentality should stay a bit down normal...The pressure should stay in the middle...in player instructions be sure to put wingers, striker and the first midfielder (fast if possible) pressuring...Defensive line should stay I normal...only put it deep in very complicated situations, like 1 man down, or massive pressure from the opponent while your are barely winning...etc...tackling is always normal, except for both defensive midfielders, it should be hard for both. Play normal width, and normal tempo. Put it down to lower tempo when you are in difficult situations.

You have to play by the flanks. Fast wingers are necessary, and a strong striker (and if he is fast, even better). If your striker isn't good enough, choose your better wing and play the whole game by it. Harpal Singh is fast on the left wing...Good left-backs always help. I would put one of them defensive and the other doing more forward runs.

I also noticed some specific instructions...Vijah Singh has good crossing, at least in my game. If he has, put him like you have in your tactic, going to the left. Believe me, it works.

But hell, I have seen your team...it is even worse than the one I'm training...Angola. Anyway, good luck with it!

P.S:Never play 5-3-2 or catennacio with those teams. You have to have very good defenders to do it. And you don't. :x

Hey what do you guys think of 4-3-2-1? I started using it some games ago and I'm winning with like 60% possesion, scoring minimum 3 per game without conceeding any and creating many chances. Used that in some friendlies: won 2 of them with 5-0 and one with only 4-0 :p.

4-3-2-1 is OK - I think it's slightly too defence biased. I prefer having 2 up front myself. I like to play an attacking 4-4-2, either in Diamond formation if I'm looking for quick attacks, scoring on the break etc, or in Line formation if I'm looking to control the game and score with build ups.

The pics are slightly large so apologies - forgot to change the JPEG compression.

Diamond: (vs mid-table, lower-table)

Line: (vs higher-table, european teams)

If I'm playing weak sides, like in the FA cup, or weak European sides, I play a slight variation of the Diamond formation which gives more attacking options: (more of a 4-3-3)

In the case of all 3 formations, I rely on these things:
- Strong central defenders (>15 in tackling, marking, heading, jumping, strength)
- Central midfielders that get back and help out; need good tackling, stamina, teamwork
- Fast wingers/fullbacks. The wingers need good dribbling, crossing, creativity, and the fullbacks need good tackling and crossing.
- Strikers that can hold up the ball to bring others into play.

You kidding? He's great!

He's also great when you have no other strikers because of injuries :p

edit/ never realised how great Kromkamp is :o

Actually bumping this cool topic. But I have a question:

Have you noticed that when you bring a new (and better) defender to your team, suddenly the defenders look like they forget how to defend? I got Eduardo (brazilian right-back) for Abel's place. When Eduardo came, my defensive line started to suffer stupid goals, especially in through balls...I am getting my ass saved because I have good offensive...

Did anyone notice this?

yeah because i think FM recognises that he is new to the defence. It's like throwing... Anton Ferdinand into the liverpool defence, he might be very good, but he wont have the partnership hyppia and carragher have.

I am noticing this on FM at the minute as i am replacing Hyppia with Medjani, who is **** good.

Well I bought Gonzalo Sorondo and he fitted in perfectly, so don't what you guys are talking about. :S

right guys, i managed to finish 2nd last year (2006/7) but to be honest, i never played well.

Basically im using the tactic shown below, but while it worked amazingly on 05/06, now that teams expect me to be good, they defend deep. While this mean i rarely concede or lose, at home teams park the bus infront of the goal and i have massive problems breaking them down. E.g. many Liverpool 0 vs 0 Fulham/Middlesbrough/West Brom and so on.

Away from home im still delighted with the tactic, it offers me the right amount of defence and attack, but at home it seems to be lacking... somewhere, even when i throw players forward :(

Ok, on the left is my main tactic, play it at home and use it against weaker teams away. On the right is what i do away from home against good teams, or at home when im leading against good teams.

ok, these are formations i use to vary it up. On the left is one that tends to work quite well away, while on the right, thats what i resort to in desperate times :(:(:(:(

Team instructions:

so yeah, i need help on how to score goals against ****ty teams at home... Quite like Liverpool in real life really.
