Tactic Tactic Tactic - Read if you have a tactic.

I'm close to throwing things at the screen. I'm playing as Tottenham, and all though i'm doing ok im really not doing that great. Has someone got a tactic that will score goals, and lots of them. I've got an excellent attack and midfield, and an excellent defence, my team is excellent, and it's becoming rather silly that whatever tactic i choose, i still lose to every big four club AND regularly have about 20% possession.

Bear in mind this is coming from someone who, to be quite honest, is normally pretty ******* good at this game.

I am third by the way, but like i say, it's third with a hefty amount of luck in my opinion.

Go to the SI games tactics forum and open some threads up there, if people have good reviews of the tactic download it.

I did that and found a few good ones (no longer have them).

Against some clubs (H)

I just get annoyed, like, in the old FM i'd just pack the midfield, pressure constantly and completely outplay teams, and i don't seem to be able to do it on this game...

Do something radical... in my Everton game i got pissed off with 0-0 Draws so i went 4-2(MC)-1(AMC)-3 for a while with Vaughan, Defoe and Johnson up front - and this was probably the first tactic i've EVER used without a DM (or at least an arrow pointing to DM). Scrapped a few decent results and after 4-5 games went back to my old 442 and was back on form :)

Here's what I do against top tier teams in the FM edition, and usually works. There are some points:

--Look at their tactic...if it's 4-4-2.--

CMD man-marks one of the strikers. CD with better speed marks the other (in the same zone as him, of course). The other CD is zonal, but tight. If their wingers are great (Ronaldo, Malouda, stuff like that), your wingers should tighly man-mark them. The LD and RD should be there to cover if your wingers fail or if their left/right-backs overlaps.

--If it's 4-5-1...--

Nothing better. One CD tighly marks the striker, the other does zonal tighly. If they put loads of midfielders in the box for the final blow, you better put the CMD helping the CD back there, with defensive attitude. If not, then the CMD may have loads of space to do their game. The wingers man-marking stuff also applies here. Loads of pressure is needed against those guys, the midfield usually gets very overloaded in these matches.

--General considerations--

- If they have a really good playmaker/long range (Lampard), you better put a big line of pressure there.
- If their strikers are quick, deep defensive line. If their great in air, high defensive line. If they have someone great in air and another quick as hell (Villa and Zigic always comes to mind, and Valencia are quite hard to win) then you are screwed. Put the line in the middle.
- Wing plays, always normal attitude, counter-attack ticked if your team is quick.
- Tempo and Time Wasting are optional. But if you are winning without deserving it, you better start to up the Time Wasting a bit and slower the tempo and promote long passing if you have a good target man, or just short passing between the defenders.
- Creative freedom for the 5 in the back should be lower than normal. They can't concede errors.
- Be careful in the last 30/20 minutes if you are winning. The other team goes 4-2-4 usually, so man-mark accordingly. A good time to counter-attack as well. In other words, the match "brokes", and there are loads of space.
- In corners, defend with 9 if you have a great defense. If you are unsure about your defense, defend with 10. In tight situations, everyone should be in the back.
- If you have a quick striker, through balls are a wonder. And put him pressuring a lot to waste the CD.

This is usually what I do. And it usually works. Of course sometimes I lose, even if making everything right, but it's usually by 1-0, 2-1. And sometimes i scrap a horrid 1-0 win without deserving, but football is that. On the other hand, I got some amazing wins like 3-0 at Benfica's home and 4-1 at Porto's home (with Sporting Lisbon). Can't complain there mate (H)

The game just isn't fun without WWW2 or the Diablo Tactic huh Tom?

On previous FM games Shifty, not CM.

Cheers Johnny, haven't bothered with man marking in a while but might give it a go.

Man-marking works wonders if you have good zonal cover, that's it. But sometimes it's hard to mark everyone in a team full of stars.

I'm a follower of Big Sam when it comes to matches. I go for results. If my team completely dominated the match, then good. If not, the wins are important. This happens when I use small clubs though. When it comes to big clubs, its about performance and results. But I always play 4-5-1 when I'm away from home, unless its against struggling teams.

I've developed a classic 4-4-2 formation over the last 3 fm games i've played, a home and away version (more like attack and counter attack) which can also change to a 4-1-3-2 (or 4-1-3-1-1) counterattack. Could share it but I doubt it'll work without your players having stats that perfectly suite this tactic. It never works for me with original teams when I first go to a club.
So.. I guess thats no good ey? :(

Tottenham must be the only team I fancied playing with in every C/FM game I played so far and not beeing able to get any kind of result with whatsoever.

Redeveloped (great word eh!?) my 442 to allow my AMC more of a free role and it seems to be working, i'm still shipping goals at the back but i'm creating way more chances. Now, if only Keane would start putting them away.

Still, i'm second, which isn't too bad.

i use a 4-2-3-1 now which has worked wonders with several teams, it's the one that has given me the most results..

but i've used two 4-4-2s (normal and diamond) which also turned out good, but those were more adapted to the teams i was managing at the time...the 4-2-3-1 is great, if anyone wants me to upload it...
