Spain's Problem

Internazionale

Elo Ratings
I admire Spain NT for years. They did pretty good in the WC '06 at group stage, but after reaching the knock-out stages, they were out.

RFEF major winning trophy was from 1964 winning EURO trophy, which is far away back then.

In short, Aragones needs to be replaced. He sucks !

Let me tell you that any catalan or basque football team would have a similar level to many European teams. It would be very far from teams like Andorra as someone says, and not much lower to the Spanish one.
just for fun:

catalan lineup

Valdés
Capdevilla
Curro Torres
Puyol
Oleguer :(
Xavi
Cesc
Iniesta
Luis Garcia
Gabri
Luque

basque lineup

Lafuente
Del Horno
Mendieta
Ivan Campo
Iraola
Xabi Alonso
Arteta
Guerrero
Yeste
Etxeberria
Llorente

these are the players I know the best, and the ones I could remember of, it's possible that someone important is missing.
anyway judging by these lineups, I reckon the basques would get their arses kicked...

Long reading.

I don’t care about the Spanish Nt and you won’t see me posting about it very often. The reason is that the Spanish NT is still presented as something that represents idea of Spain in which I don’t believe.

The Spanish NT is a huge disaster because in Spain, not just in Catalonia or Basque Country, people don’t support it like in other countries. In Spain people supports a club and that’s all.

Something different happens with basketball, in which sport recently Spain won the World Championship, and it was celebrated by Catalans. Why? Because basketball team is not seen as something representative of the ancient, narrow-minded and centralist Spain. It’s seen like a team which you can identify regardless the ideology you have.

Let me tell you that any catalan or basque football team would have a similar level to many European teams. It would be very far from teams like Andorra as someone says, and not much lower to the Spanish one.

Besides some very successful Spanish teams in sports such as basketball, handball, hockey (in different surfaces), water polo, … and so on, are basically or in a big number composed by catalan players. (don’t know much about Basque ones)

Anyway, I don’t think we’ll see catalan or basque national teams playing big competitions in big sports, basically because Spain, and other big countries, won’t allow it.

By the way, a player can not refuse to go the the NT if called. I don’t know about Puyol, Xavi, Cesc, Xavi Alonso’s… ideologies, but they must to go to the NT if they are called. If a player doesn’t go to with the NT when called he is sanctioned (and crucified by the media)
Amen.

I just hope they stop calling Puerta, last thing I want is to see him get injured ''representing'' Spain.

If Juande Ramos ever leaves Sevilla, I want him to take over the NT. Now there's a coach who knows how to manage a team.

the best teams all thru history of the spanish NT has been when it was full of basque and catalan players..

Catalonia and Basque as an international NT would not be anywhere like Andorra. These teams already play friendlies against good international teams and they hold their own.

Puerta was awful when he came on but i guess he was nervous because it was his debut and in such short notice.

As far as i'm aware, for the Basques and Catalans to have their own national teams play in International competitions they must have their own leagues with their teams from the region. So Barcelona, Espanyol, Nastic, would have to play in the Catalonia league and Athletic, Real Sociedad, etc would have to play in a Basque league. I'm not sure Barcelona would want to do that, they'd have too much to lose...

The problem with the NT is that we don't have a manager who's up to the task. A Benitez type manager would be ideal. Someone tactically strong enough to get results and keep the defense tactically disciplined. The problem is that we don't have a surplus of those type of coaches in Spain.

The biggest problem is using a 4-3-3 just to fit in freakin Torres. Just play a 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 using the wings. Oh, and bring back the captain, he wasn't the problem :P

Yeah and that will solve everything because a year ago playing with wings and with Raul the team was kicking ass all over the place. Like having to go to a play-off in a mediocre group.... or being eliminated at the 04 Euro in the group stages...

It's always the same story: we were superior, we played better, we had the posession but bad luck/the ref/[inster excuse] is why we lost the game.

I think we are all tired of the same stories. We all know that we never win because every time the players have to show character they crumble, enter in a state of panic while the opposing teams gain confidence and courage. It happened against France. The team fought and went up ahead through Villa's penalty, so far so good, but then France turned it up a notch and once they scored the equalizer we all knew what was coming. The defense and keeper start to look nervy, the forwards can't control a pass, the entire team looks disjuncted as if not knowing what to do in the situation. It's been like that since i can remember.

Aragones in all his insanity has been one of the few people to come out and say it "we don't have the same level of competitiveness as other NT's"

Sweden was just the latest. The team plays well, has possesion because Sweden decide to sit back and counter-attack as if saying 'ok show us what you got' and in one counter-attack they score and again lots of possesion but the team never really looks too dangerous. Torres got manhandled by the Swedish defenders and Villa fought a lot but had no support. Cesc was annonymous and the team only went forward better once Iniesta came on. Yet still by looking at the players you saw the lack of drive and gut the body language gave away. Nobody really encouraging the other players, showing some fire, or passion. It's like they're all scared to fail or just not bothered, either way this National team won't win anything until this problem is solved. Not always the best team wins, sometimes it's the team that wants it the more.

Well, the first thing I must say is: If Spain NT sucks a lot now is due to a lot of people regarding to PRESS. Spanish press as MARCA or AS are the WORST thing Spain has. EVERYTHING regarding National team is manipulated for MARCA, AS, TVE 1, SER, etc, etc. Spanish team is not everybodys team, is the press team.

About the feeling from the supporters, dont' listen to this people is always saying "Catalonia is not Spain" or stupid things like this.
EVERYTHING IS POLITIC, and the spanish team have (as always) a LOT of people supporting. I'm Spanish, from Valencia and I'm the first to support Spanish NT. But everything is manipulated for RFEF and the country center press.
Villar sucks, Aragones sucks and all the RFEF sucks, they must be out of here. This is the problem.

Well at least he had a defined game style and created a lot of goal chances each match.

About press influencing players... c'mon if a player it's influenced by the media he's not worth of be called professional.

No, the player it's not influenced by the media, the media says who is the player choiced for the national team or not.

Why hasn't the Spanish team played in Basque Country recently? Or what about at Camp Nou? Oh yea and I also forgot Riazor and Sanchez Pizjuan.. The places where the Spanish team is mostly supported are MAdrid and Valencia

I repeat, everything is politic, believe me ;). Spanish team hasn't played at Bilbao for example because it's very dangeous due to the radicals around there (I don't mean ALL the people, but there are a lot of political radicals and the Spanish team playing there would be a motive to do a lot of bad things and not for football. (politic again: ETA,HB etc, etc)

In Barcelona, well I don't think Maragall (the president os Catalonia) see this with good eyes (politic again). And you say Sanchez Pizjuan? In Andalucia Spanish team has been always supported A LOT. And why do you take Andalucia or Galicia inside the independentist? It's just Catalonia and Basque country.

And yes, Valencia and Madrid are always the main supporters for the National Team.

But I repeat, I don't think this is the main problem for Spanish Team.

Italy for example at the beginnig of the world cup was very separated in feeling about the national team due the scandal of the Juve, Milan, etc, etc...But what now? I'm sure everybody says: "Forza Italia"...I mean that, football people like us beleive in cups and goals, not in politics.

PS: I was at Firenze for 5 days on August. Your city is WONDERFUL :)

Well first of all let me tell you I am not Italian nor from Florence even though I lived there. Second of all, I'm andalusian and you did not answer my question, why hasn't the Spanish NT played in the Sanchez Pizjuan? Oh maybe it's because the last time they did, ppl actually started booing the ''National'' team. And you say the Basque Country and Catalonia are the only regions independentist ideals? Good one, but just not true, so are Andalucia and Galicia but of course to a minor degree. You also assume that people in Andalucia support the national team a lot, well that's another lie. They didn't even bother putting giant screens in most major Andalucian cities during the World Cup. Now Italy is a completely different story. People throughout most of Italy feel mostly italian, unlike ppl in the spanish territory, and trust me a lot of italians just jumped on the ''champions of the world'' bandwagon to have another excuse to get drunk (which i'm not criticizing). And for the record many true Fiorentina fans are against the national team, which is the reason why before the Italy-Germany match the Italian NT had not played a match in Florence since 1992 when the Italian NT was booed at the Franchi.

Iniesta is spanish 100% from Albacete, not catalan, but he was invited to play for Cataluña one of those stupid friendly matches.
