Sound Problem

I've recently had a problem with the volume of sound coming from my speakers and headphones, it's very low even at full volume. So obviously I checked all of the volume settings and making sure nothing was muted but I still have the problem. In FPS games like Battlefield 2 I can hear stuff thats going on far away no problem, but things that take place close, like shooting a gun, can barely be heard. Does anyone know why and how I can fix it? Thanks.
