Definitely an improvement over FIFA 2004 but still a long way behind even PES1/WE5 in gameplay let alone the newer titles.

I played about 9 or 10 games with the demo using the demo expander so I could have a higher res, longers halves, etc. so I could give it a fair shot. For those of us who played PES/WE for a few years now you notice that the FIFA titles have no passion. You don't feel much when you score a goal. In WE7:I I wave my fist at the screen when I score or throw my hands up. FIFA doesn't make you feel anything and the goals just don't feel like you've achieved something real. Most of the goals in PES/WE you can imagine scoring in real life and the physics are pretty much there. With FIFA, you just don't feel like you've genuinely scored a goal and it just feels clinical. It doesn't capture the sport at all to me and it's passionless.

Still not as good as FIFA 98 anyway!

It's a pre-alpha demo guys. Danny Isaac said that the gameplay will be on par with PES/WE ;) .
Seriously, I think it is better than FIFA 2004. But like Wolf said, there is something missing from the game that is not right. Call it passion or a lack of aunthentically capturing the game, but it just does feel like right. The atmosphere and the player animation are good.
The gameplay has improved but still not in PES/WE class. When is EA going to get rid of the corner and free kick systems. Maybe it's just me, but I do not need to be told how to kick the ball. That just ruin the game for me. I can bear with the rest of the game but the free kick and corner kick need to be overhaul. It will be EA gimmick (marketing feature) next year for sure.
I like the penalty kick system in FIFA. Konami needs to improve in this area. The force feedback feature in the penalty kick system simulates the tensions involve in a penalty shootout.
Overall, it looks promising for a pre-alpha. Looking forward to FIFA 2006 when EA will finally get it right.

Yeah Wolfy, I pretty much agree.

I don't think FIFA 2005 is by any means awful. It's OK, but lacks any real depth and grit. I particularly miss the physical tussles at which WE8 excels. The FIFA gameplay is too clean, polite and passionless.

There's an unfortunate PES fanboy tradition of infantile FIFA bashing as if it's the worst game ever, just for the sake of it (cue the fanboys to quote me and say that it is the worst game ever  ), but looking objectively at 2005, I find the controls are quite responsive and it's nice to have control of your players rather than the increasingly wearisome need to use super-cancel in WE8 and still have your players fail to respond or move like they're in quick-sand.

But with PES4 going on-line, thus ridding us of the worst aspect of PES - the AI and all the crap that goes with it - I don't really feel a need to have FIFA.

how can u be so happy for scoring on fifa since on world cup 2002 when the other team scored on the start i shooted and in next 5 secs i scored from the middle so it is pretty tough to lose. And when score is 50-1 it is not nuthing to be happy bored of scoring from middle. Or fifa 2003 u can't score easily from the penalty aera and from the corner sides goals are easy in.

Come on! Why are PES/WE fans insulted by a topic about FIFA?? ;)
MOVE this topic to PES/WE/ISS vs FIFA forum!

good point wolf. even though i just play 2 games so far (because i have class). the first game i played is 0-0, second i played 2-0. seriously i not feel very excited. but i play pes almost a year, i still feel happy i score goal in pes than fifa even though just 1-0 i win.

judge by the demo, beside graphic and those orginal kit (i also have them in pes :D), i still not feel anything better than pes but is defintely better than FIFA2004 and EURO2004.

for me, the most thing i hate in FIFA was their set pieces, everytimes i get set pieces in FIFA just make me want to switch it off and go play pes

It's definitely an improvement over FIFA 2004, but it still has the same fundamental problems than the previous games.

The gameplay is too much srcipted, so after some matches you will experience the same goals.

Passing is very unrealistic and shooting like fireing a rocket!

For me, it's not fun.

//Edit: Oh, and the graphics are ugly, the kits, faces, simply everything is blurred - but it's a question of taste...

I hate the game…well, that’s a bit harsh, but I don’t like it, put it that way. I played one game…well that’s enough for me.

Gameplay is alike Fifa 2004 with improved player responsiveness. Passing is too fluid, opposition don’t close you down, there’s no pressing functionality.
The game is too static, players feel too light…not like last year, when they felt too heavy. The game generally lacks any sort of passing variation, whereas no matter what you do, it always seems to feel one dimensional.

EA have no concept of football, I’ve probably spent 70% of my life on a football field and this game feels nothing like football. It’s crap…I’d rather break my ankle than play this game.

I played some games from the fifa05 demo and i must say its still not my cup of tea. And i think it will never be.
First off all the same stupid corner and free kick systems. I think EA implemented this because the 5 year old who play fifa.

The overall gameplay doesnt feel free to me, the players movement and how they behave with the ball still feels crippeld to me.

The players can still make great passes no matter in what position they are and no matter what the body postition is.

The long passes look like pissballs

First contact is a complete joke. What does it at to the gameplay really. You can do it whenever you want, no matter if the player is skilled or not.

Off the ball, still a hilarious feature that pretty much usseless.

Shots are still way too hard. I had Pirlo scored a nuclear rocket free kick against me. The second time i blinked my eye the ball was already in the net, damn. Highly unrealistic.

The only good thing is that they improved a bit on the ball fysics. The ball bounces more freely against players and the keeper doesnt save the ball scripted anymore.

EA have brainwashed the people that actually like this game, it's soo strange and creepy at the same time. Fifa 2005 is a game you play purely for some comedy.

NOT TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY

Play some more so you can have a proper view. After one game you cannot say how bad it is.

Seeing as though I bought PES3 over FIFA 2004 last year I'll give my thoughts.

In my first game I thought of FIFA 2004 as well. But once you get the hang of first touch it really opens up the dimensions of gameplay. And there are many. I go inside, via the wings, pass backwards etc. The game is far less static than FIFA 2004. I always had to trigger player runs for somewhere to go but not this time. Player movement around the pitch is still better in PES though.

Shooting (no more super curled shots) and passing is much improved in FIFA but at the moment I don't think it's as good as PES, although the passing does look real IMO. But first touch is really handy. You can flick a ball in any direction and use it to your advantage to get past players. It's also handy to knock the ball into space when dribbling. It's much better than older FIFA's where I always had to bash the buttons waiting for them to kick it. I think first touch is a very good inovation. I'm sure PES players wouldn't complain if it was in PES.

I have a feeling people are still judging this game on reputation. I think FIFA 2005 will put the series back on the right track. We can expect PES4 to be great as well so it should be a good year all round. All round everyone should be happy. For certain this is the best FIFA. FIFA 98 was good for its day but with 2005 I've yet to spot any huge weakness.
