Rugby 08 Editing Thread

Hi Guys,

I'm not sure if this kind of thread would be OK here, but I'm writing to ask if any of you know how to edit the availability of tournaments in the simulation game by EA SPORTS called Rugby 08.

Seeing that the FIFA Community is bigger than the Rugby one, I'm wondering if there are any programmers from Rugby-minded countries who have the game and could help us out.

What we're essentially trying to do is enable the most recent Lions tour of New Zealand in 2005, with files for this tournament all being available, as well as seperate Lions tours for Australia and South Africa. There are also tournament files for a fantasy 10 Nations tournament: the European 6 Nations + Argentina, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

Also, as another little editing project that I'm doing for that game, I'm trying to make the 2 representative teams of the British and Irish Lions and the New Zealand Maori. I have the rosters done for both teams as well as the kits and minis for the British and Irish Lions, with the logos for both teams being included by default.

However, I don't have kits for the New Zealand Maoris, and such is the engine that a team without kits crashes the game when it gets to the loading screen.

What I'd like to have done for this team is for someone to edit the kits from another similar team - The Junior All Blacks, and replace its kits' logo with the one for the New Zealand Maori.

Here are the kits for the Junior All Blacks:

I've Uploaded the original minis for the NZ Maoris from the game as well as those from the Junoir All Blacks here:
http://files.filefront.com/Maori+TBD+Minisrar/;13422292;/fileinfo.html

and so what needs to be done for the minis is to replace the pink/yellow placeholder minikits with the one from the junior all blacks, keeping the original maori logo in the background and replacing the minis' shirt logo of the junior all blacks with one of the New Zealand Maori in both white (home mini) and black (away mini)

Here's the biggest logo that I could find for the New Zealand Maori team:

So If any one here can help out with any of the above it'd be very much appreciated.

If you have Rugby 08 installed, could you then try to upload the stadiums that are included in the game?
There are a lot of stadiums (e.g. Stade de France) which would be great to get imported into FIFA.:)

Hey mate! Glad to see another rugby fan :D...I play rugby 08 since a year now and i love this sport since I'm a rugby player myself :D

The only rugby 08 community that i know is here:

http://www.therugbyforum.com/forum/

maybe you cand find some help there :D

I'm actually asking all this on behalf of that community there! :D No-one knows how to unlock new tournaments. :(

I'm thinking that maybe programmers like Rinaldo or Steve Witts could help us out with our dillema. :)

I've tried converting 7 stadiums that i need for my RTWC patch already, I've gotten them into a 3ds model, but there is a bug with texture application in rhino:

I though it would work without converting, but never mind, it looks promising.
Hope there will be a way to fix that texture problem.

I'm thinking of a solution that would involve having multiple textures on one tp.

Hi Robbie, I have Rugby 08 (yes I played rugby when I was ehm.... younger and I still love this sport) but I never tried to edit the EA game. Btw. it looks like many files are very similar in their structure to FIFA 09. I took a look to the TRF and I wondered that there is no way to download an editor unless you post 10 "valuable" posts in the forum - surely I will not do it. So, if I can help in some way I will be happy to do it, but you have to tell me everything you already know about the game structure and support me with the state of the art tools already available. You have my e-mail.

Hi Rinaldo,

It's good to have someone of your experience helping us out.

As for the editor, I found it on Filefront, but it seems like you've already gotten the link from above. :)

It merely edits rosters and player data as found in the Rosters folder that are saved in My Documents. (think of them as the My Squads folder for FIFA). Nothing like your Creation Master. ;)

Regarding the structure of Rugby08, almost all files are stored in the massive data.gob file. The only two programs I know that have been able to open the file type are EAGraph and BIGGui. Inside that data.gob are just about every file type you could imagine; .fsh .o .bin .xml .mis even .exe's and .bat's.

The .mis files are essentially the "mission" files for each of the challenges in challenge mode.

There is also a .english file for the English menu text and a .french for the French language text. For now, in order to edit these two files, you have to use a Hexeditor.

On a lesser note, both the audio and cinematics formats are essentially the same. (audio has .asf chants and dat_eng.big + hdr_eng.big, and cinematics are all in .viv format in a motion.big)

From what I know directly, in order to have a team in game, you need 6 things.
- Roster of 30 players. (both Minimum and Maximum Value)
- A unique ball texture for a team.
- A unique set of logos, both in static and TV wipes format. (In the menu, Minikits have both the Minikit and Logo on them)
- Unique banners (set of 4)
- Unique kits; Kits are divided into two textures. Front, which includes the whole textures for shorts and socks as well as the shirt front and collar; and the Back, which has a shirt back plus a number texture for each of the starting XV players as well as the immediate subs (15 + 7 = 22)

- The team must be enabled (with a value of "yes") in both

28d3f14b5de7a6923f483cf00683fe1d.xml

and

be2970b0ada8e42cf891ce60ffe69575.xml

In the case of both the B&I Lions and NZ Maori, all graphics files, except the kits are in the game by default. The B&I Lions also had its roster included by default, but I had to manually edit the NZ Maori team with the editor in order to get the mandatory 30 players.

To give you an idea of what I needed to successfully create those teams here are the kit filenames.

aac2c4ec7e0fd49e8cccb69217ea8054.fsh - NZ Maori Away Shirt Back and Numbers

The major problem is the coded naming of files inside data.gob. One result of this is that each object (ie kits, logos, stadiums) already has an assigned codification. Thus, objects for completely new teams or tournaments that have never had one can’t be added.

It's nothing like FIFA, where you have a system of naming for each type of file, like how a stadium model (m716###.o) is different from a stadium sky (m715###.o) There has been an attempt to decode the data.gob but not all files have been uncovered as to what they are.

You can have a look at this .xls and see what has been already been deciphered. http://www.planetcricket.net/files/colin/rugby/rugbyGob.xls

Something that I think would be really beneficial is a program that sorts all those files, if by nothing else, then at least their file extension. I tried opening the data.gob with File Master 09, but it didn't pick up the files inside. :(

As for the tournaments that we are trying to unlock, we are not sure whether we should be looking at the menu text files, the xml's or 2 other file types called .rfe and .rsg.

I've actually found relevant .rsg files for the Lions Tours:

5fe36c7ad28a8bb21aa332220730de23.rsg - "NO WARMUP" - 3 Tests vs Australia
9d2d44ee6682cb8acc8ee38d017ba1b7.rsg - "NZ Tour" - 1 Test vs each of the Super 14 Teams + 1 Test vs the NZ Maori Team + 3 Tests vs New Zealand
a888a0df722adc0507005adc033216c4.rsg - "NO WARMUP" - 3 Tests vs New Zealand
c6f977643ede83976b0c19ade4830016.rsg - "NO WARMUP" - 3 Tests vs South Africa
cdb4251b03e30d656efdeb67bbfbaae5.rsg - "AUS Tour" - 1 Test vs each of the Super 14 Teams + 1 Test vs Australia A + 3 Tests vs Australia
d3e7e30781e1fb00f0738a7e86654ec3.rsg - "SAF Tour" - 1 Test vs each of the Super 14 Teams + 3 Tests vs South Africa

But these only allow you to determine which teams play in the tournaments and in which city/stadium they play. They don't enable/disable the availability of the Tours' themselves.

I've also found the .rfe files for the Lions' tour, but I don't know what to do with them. They're all in fd4a6a3492d809b22f9fd58443aef6d6.big and there is some code for them in: d22f174aaaa1d36dbd5482f671a299d7.xml

So this is where we are stuck. We need to find some way of enabling the Lions Tour so that it shows in Tournament Mode. Whether it's in a file that we've already looked at or happened to overlook, there must be some way; If files for the two extra teams required for the Tour, the B&I Lions and NZ Maori have hidden files, the Tour itself must be able to be unlocked too.

That's everything I know for now. I hope you can help us.

Hi Rinaldo, it's me again.

I've found the relevant .rfe file for the tournaments menu. It's inside 1d63d9f5bf21d225224e6e7eec725621.big, and it's called "tournaments_menu.rfe". From what I can gather there are only the 6 default options to choose from, which have links to the Screen values found in d22f174aaaa1d36dbd5482f671a299d7.xml. Apparently, Rugby 06 had more tournaments, so there could be the possibility of replacing that .rfe file with the one from 06. Unfortunately, as I don't have Rugby 06, I wouldn't be able to test this.

Guys, Fantastic News. I managed to unlock the Lions Tour by using the tournaments_menu.rfe file from Rugby 06! Everything works superbly now!

For those of you that are interested I might add this little patch as an extra to my RTWC one, as well as making a mini release for now.

Well I'm having immense trouble just trying to convert the national stadiums of the Tri-Nations Countries. So unless someone has a solution for that, then no stadium from Rugby 08 can be converted. :(

And Stade de Paris is just Parc des Princes!

Unless you mean the little stadium on the outside of the Parc des Princes?

The Landsdowne Road version that I have is the one from ECP.

I think it's the same for the Rugby 08 game.
