Rosicky v. "Rosidsky"

Why do all commentators and pundits pronounce Tomas Rosicky's surname "ro-sid-ski"? Am i missing something about the Czech language where c's are pronounced like d's? Where is this S sound coming from?

It's probably because that is the proper way of saying it. You get that often with foreign imports that pronounciation will change because they've now actually bothered to look it up.

I remember the first time someone mentioned Pirès when he joined Arsenal he pronounced it "Pie-ers" (riming with "empires")

You should be happy with that, some canadian commentators i heard say it "Ro-zi-ki".


People that have english language as their mother-tongue are not used to saying the "cz" sound, so they can never pronounce it right.

hah, the spanish Pro Evo commentators say Rosiki. you'd have a tough time playing that game .

pronounciations of player names is not something to worry about, no commentator is going to get each name right, just like alot of us probably mispronounce a ton of international names.

the truth is that the name is portuguese so the the correct pronounciation is "Pee-res", so shame on Pires for that

It annoys me when announcers and pundits can't say the players' names properly. Severely. I can stand it with most people, but these folks get paid to talk about footballers. They'd better spend the 15 minutes it takes to look up proper pronouciations of 22 names.
Another example, speaking of, is every American "analyst" talking about "Peter" Cech. "Petr" ≠ "Peter". BAH!

It's pronounced "Ros-its-kee". In Czech, the C is pronounced "ts", and a C with a háček (&#268 is pronounced "ch".

Even a lot of Scousers I knew used to call "Shmeetser" that. Anyway if you think Graham Taylor is bad at pronounciation, David Pleat is even worse (and John Motson for that matter) !!
