Real Madrid legend makes Chelsea, Liverpool Insult.

Former Real Madrid boss and Argentine World Cup winner Jorge Valdano has slaughtered the managers of Liverpool and Chelsea - Rafa Benitez and Jose Mourinho respectively - after their Champions League semifinal meeting.

In a column for Marca, a scathing Valdano penned: "Football is made up of subjective feeling, of suggestion - and, in that, Anfield is unbeatable. Put a s*** hanging from a stick in the middle of this passionate, crazy stadium and there are people who will tell you it's a work of art. It's not: it's a s*** hanging from a stick.

"Chelsea and Liverpool are the clearest, most exaggerated example of the way football is going: very intense, very collective, very tactical, very physical, and very direct," he added. "But, a short pass? Noooo. A feint? Noooo. A change of pace? Noooo. A one-two? A nutmeg? A backheel? Don't be ridiculous. None of that. The extreme control and seriousness with which both teams played the semi-final neutralised any creative licence, any moments of exquisite skill.

"If Didier Drogba was the best player in the first match it was purely because he was the one who ran the fastest, jumped the highest and crashed into people the hardest. Such extreme intensity wipes away talent, even leaving a player of Joe Cole's class disoriented. If football is going the way Chelsea and Liverpool are taking it, we had better be ready to wave goodbye to any expression of the cleverness and talent we have enjoyed for a century."

Valdano explained why Benitez and Mourinho were to blame for the demise of flair and creativity. "The lives of Mourinho and Benitez have crossed in a world that is ever more scrutinised and exposed by the media, which is why they look at each other with such distrust," he wrote, "but they have two things in common: a previously denied, hitherto unsatisfied hunger for glory, and a desire to have everything under control.

"Both of those things stem from one key factor: neither Mourinho nor Benitez made it as a player. That has made them channel all their vanity into coaching. Those who did not have the talent to make it as players do not believe in the talent of players, they do not believe in the ability to improvise in order to win football matches. In short, Benitez and Mourinho are exactly the kind of coaches that Benitez and Mourinho would have needed to have made it as players."

hes got a point. English football is great though. But when it comes to certain matches i steer clear. But I had to watch this game. And it dissapointed me. But what this guy is saying is true. The game is so high stakes it has to be like this. Its a results business. Football isnt football as it used to be. But maybe people should watch United and Arsenal more!

Thats a great quote, I guess he does have a point Chelsea and Liverpool in particular have a very conservative playing style.

No, it is talent. His talent is doing that better than everyone else.

Valdano's just an attention whore

of course we all enjoy the kind of football where there are nutmegs every three seconds, but these days teams just focus on winning..

Why make such an insult? Insecurity because the Premiership is better than La Liga or what?

OR maybe it's because England had never shown any interest in this averagely talented player. Whatever, he is talking out of his arse. Have you ever witnessed some of the games from the Argentinian League. Some skills for sure, but a whole lot more, "ran the fastest, jumped the highest and crashed into people the hardest", type of football. Thats without mentioning the on pitch violence.

I do believe that I watched "s.h.it on a stick" quite a few times from his old team this season by the way.

Valdano is argentinian, in fact he won the world cup of 1986. He is not spanish.

You should read every column of Valdano to see he bash every team without major problems, specially Real Madrid.

Help?

What a major piece of crap article. The two legs were boring because both teams have very strong defense and not very adventurous attack and its been like that for years. Liverpool never were the adventorous type of team, even under Houllier and take away Zola + Hasselbaink and Chelsea would have been a great insomnia pill under Ranieri. Just cause they never made it as players, doesn't mean that the managers don't believe in skill and talent. They are two of some of the best managers in the world and its to no surprise that Chelsea is second most scoring team in the league, while Liverpool is 4th.

Untalented? Did he even watch any of the Chelsea games, when they are down? The play is just unbelievable, almost as good as United's. Its a well known fact, that when you have two teams with some of the best defenders in the world playing against each other in a very important game, you won't have a lot of goals.

Excellent observation. Capello is a s.h.it on a stick coach as well.

This guy is saying what a lot of us have been saying on this board the past couple of years, especially during the Chelsea-Barca clashes.

This has nothing to do with the EPL. La Liga has Capello, Aguirre, and Caparros. The latter two don't have the budget that Mourinho and Benitez has, of course. This is a problem everywhere.

Generally speaking that is most of the EPL teams, except for United, West Ham ( well now at least ), and Arsenal. Spain has a lot less of this type of game.

First off you should read Crus post and the semi between you and Boringpool was dreadful. Yes we have been dreadful this season aswell ( thanks a lot Crapello ) but I don't see how that relates to Valdano or his comments? Even if he picked on Chelsea and LPool that was more of a thing to every team that plays like that.

Capello has a bigger budget than Benitez.

Even if Benitez had a bigger budget he would play the same way...

Capello has always been the same, that should suprise no one.

So, Liverpool and Chelsea played defensive football in the match that was their most important this season, and people complain they don't go all out attacking?

Some people should just stop bitching. If they can take a club to a CL final playing beautiful football, I'm sure there'll be plenty of jobs available. Including Chelsea's if rumours are to be believed. You don't want to see football "ruined"? Take action.

Well Premiership is claimed to be the best and most exciting league in the world. Many players want to come here. Because they play attacking football. Maybe Chelsea and Liverpool have their owm way of playing. But thats also down to the players who are playing for their futures along with their manager. So pardon them for being uptight when it comes to their football. Its not like Spain where you can express yourself. Here In England its all about get the ball in the back of the net and dont beat about the bush.

The mentality here is different. The days of stepovers and nutmegs for no reason have gone. People here get paid so much that they have to take the game seriously unless their manager says they can do those things. United play great football so do Arsenal and Tottenham sometimes. But if a team feel they have to play like robots and get results like Chelsea for example then thats what they gonna do. Theres no point in assuming its **** on a stick. Whats **** on a stick is the lacklustre atmosphere of spanish football and the half empty stadiums! Its hard to watch at times because the game in italy and Spain is so agonizingly slow. The referee calls a foul for barges and nudges and red cards for tackles were you win the ball and the man. Premiership still remains the most watched league for a reason and is stronger than ever.

So you think in Spain it's not about getting the ball in the back of the net:|

Lackluster atmosphere...which games have you seen? EPL might be the most watched because that's the most marketed, not the best one. EPL has 4 stong teams than the rest are pretty garbage...I don't think that's too strong. I will agree on the ref's and the dives here in la lgia but the slowness....no.

Valdano has a point especially with Liverpool and especially with them in the Champions League. I wouldn't criticize Chelsea as much though because they pretty much only play really defensively when they're in Europe against Liverpool. Why Jose Mourinho plays this way in Europe against Liverpool I'm not really sure. After all I think the to Premiership titles Chelsea won came down to a free flowing attacking play with Robben and Cole on the wings in a 4-3-3. When Chelsea play with a 4-3-3 they usually score 2-4 goals and are at their very best.

Thank you for your intelligent observations mate. It certainly makes a change to read something positive from other fans regarding Chelsea.

To say that Chelsea play like robots just shows how much someone has actually watched Chelsea over the last few seasons. As you pointed out, that is far from the truth.

Pefan, Man U have played some fine football this season for sure, but you have got a little carried away with their success I think. Where was Man U's fantastic football for the previous two seasons I would like to ask you? Where was Man U's fantastic free flowing football when they played Milan in the return leg of the Champions League semi final this season?

You need to get real mate and realise that sometimes pretty footie just does not work in the EPL . Where has it got Arsenal? Frigging nowhere is the answer. Get off your high horse about Man U mate. You sound like a "fan boy" with every post that you write.
