Chapter 5 - Playing with the big boys...
As I sat out in the pleasent warmth of the July evening my thoughts began to wander. I though back to my performance in the last season, and the upcoming challenge that first division football would present. The most worrying thing that had happed last season was how badly my team performed one the tactic had been cracked. I would need to do something about that.
Another, slightly less worrying thing was the rapidity of the decrease of my finances. I looked around my squad and it suddenly occured to me that there were a lot of players earning large wages for very little, and even better some of their contracts were nearing an end. I proptly fixed up literally masses of free transfers. Those I couldn't get to leave on Bosmans were released on frees, those who were to expensive to release on a free were sold for nothing. In the end I saw the backs of 12 players for absolutely nothing, except wage relief. Amoung those were a couple of big guns that had annoyed me, such as Durkovic and Beuckert, hopefully setting an example to the others.
As you can imagine, at this stage my squad was pretty barren. Infact I had only 16 players!!!! Luckily, TV rights had left me with a cool £9m to spend and my squad did not stay empty for long. I made several nice transfers, including the infamous CM star Mark Kerr, who to my luck had failed the medical taking him to Celtic, and a rather nice defender my scouts found called Ronald Schmidt, who proved to be an excellent find, plus a few others.
Sergey Nikiforenko's value had escelated to in excess of £8m and I decided he would form the nucleas of my season's campaign. Ristic had been very impressive the previous season and guided me well to D1, but with a new striker signed his position looked in doubt. I was also hoping to try out Popov but that was now looking very unlikely to happen. I felt my defence was solid, I had added Schmidt and a couple of DMCs which I felt would, along side the great Okeke and Menze, set me up nicely for the riggours of first division enemy attacks.
My finances were now back to the way they had been - ie bad and I had signed a lot of high wage bills so it looked unlikely I would be doing any more spending this season but I was happy with the squad I had and felt it could see me to a respectable league position.
