[PS2] "It's PES Jim, but not as we know it.."

That Nice Guy
I've not had the net now for a week, so ive been on PES5 a lot, and ive got some opinions on it.

To start with, i'd like to make it clear to all the noobs and randoms here that i have played Konami's football game since before some of you even played a computer game, never mind PES. Admittidly there are more with a vaster experience than I, but ive played every instaliation of the game since ISS Deluxe for the SNES. Hence, i know what im on about when it comes to the console versions.

PES5 is a good game, its easily the best football game out there and im sure im going to play it for a fair few months yet, i suppose in a way im quite addicted to it. However, for all its addictivness and my drive to play it, PES5 has some rather major errors that most of us agree on:

The shooting on PES5 PS2 is nothing short of stupid, altered in such a way that Lampard is god and Owen is diabolical, shooting like a spazmadic teenger high on crack. Finishing is now relatively realistic to be fair, its only when its compared to it's long shooting and fairly distant brother that it becomes a problem. It seems that with anyone with attributes of over 75 in shooting acc/power can score goals at any point in the match, get into the centre and let one rip to about half way up the power bar and watch it sail into the top corner, before you promtly jump for joy at the wonderous goal you've scored, your mates congratulate you on such amazing shooting; but inside you know the computer has done the rest for you. Indeed, it seems that long shooting either results in a godlike goal, or a Waddle-like blaster reaching into row Z.

Dribbling was meant to be realistic in PES5, and on the PC demo it seemed this way, people such as Gilberto struggled while Henry could glance past a few defenders with a bit of skill. Seemingly something went wrong in the conversion to PS2, now when i attempt to dribble with Zidane/Henry/Owen/Denilson/Ronaldo/Duala the results just dont seem to come, hell, thats the understatement of the year; rather that results dont even have any chance of coming due to the unrealistic nature of the whole conception of the new dribbling model, i can only seemingly beat one or two players with Ronaldinho, and thats only when using the silly flip-flap move, something that Ronny rarely does in real life. Dribbling IS more realistic in PES5, but its gone way too far the other way.

This is probably just me but the camera angle seems to have changed in PES5 PS2, it might be that my eyes have deteroirated over the last month but the Normal (Long) camera now seems way too far out, i find myself using the Normal (medium) camera that always seems too close, if for nothing else but that fact i can see the players. I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has had a similar problem with the PS2 version.

Tackling has been critisced by most, i dont really notice it myself until i go a goal down, the opposing team then seems to be awarded way too many fouls for seemingly innocent challenges, a bit on the silly side from Konami.

What's... actually changed? People have said that the Heading is improved and to some extent is, but i went and played on PES4 for an hour last night, and only once or twice did i notice a difference in the heading animation, nothing worthwhile. What im saying is there is nothing to sing and dance about with this new incarnation of the game, the ML is still woefully Japanese and the gameplay is much the same.

Easily the worst thing in the game is the thing that is totally and honestly worse than it was in PES4, most of the stuff ive mentioned here is annoying but acceptable in a way that it is SLIGHTLY better than its older brother. However, the lack of any other kind of weather condition or crowd in the master league is totally and honestly beyond my comprehension. The crowd i cant understand, i never had a problem with it in PES3/4 and why didnt Konami just put a lame picture of a mass crowd in the stands, instead of "empty-ness". The weather conditions are the one thing that has actually got me infuriated, i cant honestly believe that Konami have decided to implement this feature.

Which, in a strange way leads me to the final question of whether its all deliberate, Konami seem to know that they've got a brief stranglehold on the market, so they have produced a VERY poor attempt at a game in the hope of making PES6 look amazingly better for the next gen consoles. In my opinion its a great idea, Konami now produce a great game and we all say how much it's improved in a year.. when infact it's two years.

Quite simply PES5 is by no means a bad game, its the fact that its better than PES4 in about one niche that makes it a problem, it actually depresses me how hard this game is, and how many problems it has. To sum this "rant" up, i was talking to Steven (sportgaming) on msn the other day, on questioning his impressions and opinions of PES his response was; "While PES is a great game in terms of gameplay, why do we want to play a game thats so hard and so un-rewarding to play?"

I cant even remember the last time i played PES on my own and raised a smile, all in all with all it's problems and my depressingly looming adulthood, one phrase can sum up how i feel about this game; the simple things, simply dont seem simple anymore...

Till now i'm thinking, and still think, that PES5 isn't better then PES4 (PC)
It's different, but it needs refining. I guess they released it to soon, there are too many irritating flaws. Or the real step forward will come with PES6.

Mate that is almost what im feeling....its such a good game but we all no it they weren't such a lazy company (KONAMI) it could have been so much better!!!

I also think they did it on purpose. It seems that KONAMI ran out of ideas for the game, so what do they do? They screw up some aspects of the game in order to fix them in PES6 as well as adding a few new features, and then have everyone say how much the game has improved.. :)
Maybe am wrong, but I bet KONAMI noticed those little (or maybe not so little) things that people have been complaining about..

thats what i now think, i just believe that Konami have almost gambled (and succesfully) that PES5 will still be popular despite being no improvement on it's older brother, in the hope that PES6 will look like an even bigger leap, very clever reasoning really.
