hey Vazza, does the PS3's blu-ray player upconvert regular DVD's?

Yes it can upscale to 1080p/1080i/720p but due to to CSS restrictions, copy-protected DVDs can't be upscaled over component outputs. So, while PS/PS2 games can be upscaled over component outputs, copy-protected DVDs can only be upscaled via the HDMI output.

Also in my original post, I forgot to mention I'm looking forward to Home (due October):

Some newly released screenshots of the updated Home beta...it's looking impressive and best of all it'll be free when it's finally released :shades:

Well, I finally made up my mind and decided to pick up a PS3 last night, it came bundled with the game 'Folklore' which is actually turning out to be kinda cool.. Lovin' the navigation menu here too, nice and simple, I think it took me about 5 seconds to get used to it.

The main reason I got it was to use it as a media center, but I got a quick question to Vazza or anyone who'd know.. To play .avi files on the PS3, do I need to convert them to a different format first?

Took you long enough, Luis :p

An AVI is just a container for the video file. If the video is encoded in DivX or XviD (as most downloaded TV shows/movies are) then the PS3 should be able to play it, although there are a few exceptions, such as files encoded in the older DivX profiles but most of my collection works fine.

EDIT: You'll have to update the PS3 firmware first though, as DivX support was only introduced in version 2.10.

Ah ok, thanks a lot man! Appreciated.. (Y)

Actually, as soon as I connected the PS3 I was prompted to download the latest firmware update, which I thought was pretty neat. :)

I've discovered that I can't stream direct from my PC to PS3 wirelessly as the speeds are too slow (it pauses and skips from the offset) :(

Apparently you get much better speeds with an Ethernet cable though, but I'm yet to try that...

I decided to buy a PS3 about a month ago. What a fantabulous decision it has turned out to be, GREAT SYSTEM!

I'm not giving up on my PS2 though, I just got back from GameStop with my brand new copy of God of War II (H)

Anyone downloaded the new 2.4 update yet? In-game XMB really IS quite handy...

Sure did and yes it is awesome. I'm waiting for Rockstar to release a patch to allow in-game music and trophies for GTA IV.

Sony pulled the update and reverted back to 2.36 after some people reported that their PS3 wouldn't load up past the wave screen, which you normally get when you turn it on. It doesn't appear to be confined to a particular SKU but I've updated my 60GB PS3 and have experienced no problems so far. The update is believed to corrupt certain data on the hard disk, as removing and formatting it seems to fix the problem.
