David James will get a chance to prove his American football credentials when he joins up with the Miami Dolphins later this month.

The England goalkeeper will join the NFL squad at a training camp on June 24 where he will be put through his paces as a quarter-back, wide receiver and kicker.

West Ham goalkeeper James said: 'I am delighted to have been invited - it's a great opportunity to learn about more about the sport, and put myself up against some of the best athletes in the world.

'American Football has always shown the way forward in terms of conditioning and performance and I am keen to apply any tips or insights that I can gain to my career as a professional footballer.'

And the NFL's leading scout in Europe, Tony Allen, believes James has all the credentials to make it in American Football.

He said: 'David is exactly the kind of European sports star who we feel has the all-round athleticism and ability to hold his own in the NFL.

'It will be interesting to see him being put through his paces. As we step up our search for European athletes who can develop into potential NFL players, we are excited about the Dolphins giving us the opportunity to showcase a sportsman of his physical ability in an NFL environment.

Am i suppose to believe this?

There is precedent for soccer players to try out as kickers for NFL teams, but a quarterback and receiver? Those positions take years to develop and a goalkeeper, although having good hands, most likely won't have what it takes. But we'll see. It also looks like he's doing this just for the experience, I wouldn't expect him to switch careers.

This could be a recipe for disaster. Training camp is where those "invisible" ACL/MCL tears often happen. If he gets hurt bad who's to blame James or the Dolphins? I don't know if James has a background in this area but he could have major trouble in this area. Especially at WR with the quick cuts you have to make. He's a bigger guy so they may call on him to "go over the middle". That's where linebackers feast on WRs and the Dolphins have two beasts in Zach Thomas and Junior Seau. But they're still gonna choke and not make the playoffs.

Maybe the fairy-like European football players that pretend to get injured would get hurt there but not English players like David James. Plus, he's probably got a good arm for QB. He's definately got the biggest throw of any goalkeeper in the world.

Anyways,
I think its more for the conditioning side of the NFL (which is excellent no matter what anyone says). Obviously he won't be an NFL class QB, WR or even Kicker, but'll be interesting to see how he gets on. Good luck to him.

Come on, a blind, deaf, 1 legged monkey could make that prediction and it would probably be right. j/k

This is indeed weird.

I think this is the equivalent of European clubs bringing in Japanese players to play to bring in more interest. The NFL is probably just doing this as some kind of marketing gimmick to get more people from europe to take notice of the league.

Help?

lol, don't take it so seriously. What englishman would leave his professional football career for football, errr....american football. He will just have one or two practisises and then get back to West ham.

James is a big guy...if Steve Smith can do it and survive (big deal, him limps off after every return), David James can

He shouldn't try it regardless. Like I said, mini-camps are where some really strange, bad injuries occur. The NFL is full of dirty twats. He shouldn't risk not with England in the midst of crucial Euro qualifiers and the start of the Nationwide.

Who gives a **** about Sven? What's Glenn going to think? If he gets injured, Steven sodding Bywater is gunna be our keeper! :kader:

It's just a bit of fun for him anyway! Martin Johnson (England Rugby Player) trained with the Redskins a while back and they showed some of it on TV. They hardly take part in any full conatct scrimmages with spearing allowed!
