Magpies join Saviola chase

Newcastle United have joined Arsenal and Bolton Wanderers in trying to tempt Argentine schemer Javier Saviola to The Premiership.

Saviola is looking to leave Barcelona before the start of the new season after being informed he has no future with the European champions.

Panathinaikos have lodged a bid, but Saviola is not keen on a move to Greece, while Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven are also interested.

However, the diminutive playmaker wants to move to England, or stay in Spain, if he secures his exit from Barcelona.

After spending last season on loan at Sevilla, Saviola has no shortage of suitors and his agent Alfredo Cabrera Brizuela has already confirmed interest from Arsenal and Bolton.

But it is thought Newcastle are now exploring a deal for the 24-year-old as Glenn Roeder looks to add a creative element to his team.

Cabrera is in England to try to negotiate Saviola's move to The Premiership, but admits the player will return to Camp Nou if a transfer is not brokered.

"There are three English teams interested in Saviola and that's why I am in London," said Cabrera.

"I already had meetings with officials of Panathinaikos and PSV Eindhoven, and now I have to listen to what the English teams want to offer.

"Despite all this, if we don't reach an agreement with any team before July 17, Saviola will present himself at Barcelona for the pre-season work as his transfer belongs to that club."

Hmm, we don't stand a chance if Arsenal really want him :nape:

Rumour has it that Monaco and Marsailles are goin to fight over Boumsong.

Anyway, who do you think you need in and out? And what's your aims for the season?

First and foremost a proven goal scorer is a must. Ideally we could do with several strikers. The longer we leave it the more clubs will look at our situation and dwindle us for all they can get but European football is a big incentive so i doubt we'll see any signings until the intototo campaign is concluded.

The mid-field is looking pretty strong. At the back we could do with a left full back and possibly a new center half. Sol Capmbell would be perfect but it looks like he's going abroad. Any bid for Boumsong will be greeted with open arms.

I would like to see European qualification. There isn't a cat in hells chance of breaking into the top 4. Spurs had a good go but on paper they are better than us. I expect we'll be in a group of 4 or 5 teams fighting for 5th and 6th. This is only if we sign the right players though. As it stands on paper we are mid-table because i can't see where the goals are coming from. Rumour has it that the money isn't there to spend like it has been in previous years.

I agree, with shearer now gone, owen out for quite a while, and a shaky line of goal scorers, anything above mid-table will be suprising but welcomed..

Saviola would be a great signing and a threat along with owen...

Wenger wasn't interested in Owen to be honest. It was between us and the Kopites and i say that loosely because i don't think Benitez was that keen on him.

As for Luque he's the only injury free forward we have at the club so we can't afford to sell him. He's a certainly to start in Saturday's intertoto match so we'll see how it goes. I'm still confident he'll come good.

Reserve Team
Newcastle got some great players with lots of potentinal (Taylor and Milner) alltough it looks like the later one gets sold.

Given
Taylor
Parker
Solano
Milner
NZogbia
Emre

looks like a promising bunch of players.

Sol Campbell surely would be a huge win - because it would also help the youngsters develop.(Taylor)

Still I'd say 2 Strikers are needed urgently.
a clinical box finisher and maybe one that creates some space/time with runs (Nistelrooy surely would be an ideal candidate for the 1st part)

Klose has improved big time (before the world cup!) with his overall play - the only thing is, could he adapt to the physical level of play.

A Darren Bent, Jermain Defoe could also be handy.

most importanly is not who but THAT strikers will be bought IMO.

Parker replaces Shearer as new Toon skipper

Newcastle have appointed midfielder Scott Parker as their new captain following the retirement of Alan Shearer.

Magpies manager Glenn Roeder also revealed goalkeeper Shay Given will be vice-captain at St James' Park.

Roeder told the club's website: 'I had a decision to make about appointing a new skipper after the retirement of Alan Shearer and it's one I gave an awful lot of thought and consideration to.

'In Scott and Shay I found myself fortunate to have two outstanding candidates for a difficult role in replacing a Geordie legend like Alan who was such a magnificent skipper for this club.'

Roeder added: 'It's such a big honour and in Scott and Shay, they have all the qualities I was looking for and there were so many reasons why either could have got the job.

'However, Shay's position as a goalkeeper came into it and obviously Scott as a central midfielder is more in touch with the whole side.'

Parker, the 25-year-old former Chelsea player, will lead his side out for their opening fixture of the new campaign in the Intertoto Cup clash with Norwegians Lillestrom at St James' Park tomorrow evening.

He was out of action because of glandular fever at the end of last season when Shearer's knee injury forced his premature retirement, and Given was asked to take over as skipper for the remaining three games.

Parker joined the Magpies in a £6.5million move from Stamford Bridge last summer and was so impressive that he was touted as a candidate for the holding midfield role in England's midfield for the World Cup finals.

However, Sven-Goran Eriksson had overlooked him even before illness sidelined him.

===============================================

I'm really happy for Scott Parker, he's one of those players who've I've really been impressed with in the defensive midfiled role.

Hope McClaren would recognize that out of all the England players he is the one that is the best as a defensive midfielder, followed by Hargreaves, Carrick and Phil Neville.

A Gerrard - Parker midfield would be invincible.
