Hi everyone, I was hoping someone could help me get a network game up running. I know the basics, i.e. starting a network game, going --> preferences --> network and ticking run as server. I went to game status to find the IP address and my brother managed to find the server and get in with the IP address provided, obviously in the same house, just on another computer. So I though setting up a network game with my next-door neighbour would be just as simple, only this method, having tried him as the IP host and I, does not work. So obviously it is more complex than this. NB we both have wireless internet. Please can someone save my ass.

The router's firewall will not have any problem with you guys playing each other over the LAN. But when you diverge to global access, it blocks incoming traffic. And so will your neighbour's router-firewall. Open up the necessary ports on both firewalls. They must be mentioned in the manual somewhere, but I don't have one.

what will the opening of these "ports" do? just let in my friend to play i don't understand, not at all...

It will allow data traffic from strangers to enter your PC. Normally the firewall blocks any traffic that's not internet traffic, but you can tell it to let traffic pass that uses a designated access port. Read the manual of your router to find out how to open up ports, but you'll still need to find out which port(s) you need to open for FM07.

Network Games FAQ - At Long Last!

Finally, a solution to the network game kerfuffle! This was posted by OOTER, the moderator of Neoseeker Forums.

**************************
1. HOSTING A NETWORK GAME
**************************

Hosting a network game on FM07 is similar to previous versions. This
guide will take you step by step through how to get a game running.

a) Click START NEW GAME and create a game as usual.
b) Add your manager details and what team you wish to manage
c) Click on OPTIONS at the top of the screen
d) Click on PREFERENCES in the menu list
e) Select the NETWORK tab
f) Click the tickbox next to RUN AS SERVER put in a name in the NAME OF SERVER
g) Add a password in the password field if you wish to stop unwanted players from
connecting to your game.
h) Now click CONFIRM at the bottom of this screen. Now your game is running
as a server(online)
i) Click on GAME STATUS and you should see a SERVER I.P ADDRESS(numbers and dots)
j) Tell all the players who are going to join your network game your I.P ADDRESS and
password(if set).
k) Wait for all the other players to join the game(see next section)

**************************
2. JOINING A NETWORK GAME
**************************

Unlike hosting a network game, joining a net game is similar to earlier versions of CM.
This guide will take you step by step through how to join a net game.

a) Get the IP ADDRESS and password(if set) from the host of the game(see previous section)
b) Open up FM07 and click on NETWORK
c) Click on JOIN OTHER SERVER and then enter the IP ADDRESS that you got
in step (a) now click OK.
d) This should now take you to the network game where you can now click on
ADD MANAGER to begin. If you fail to connect, look at the COMMON PROBLEMS below.

*******************
3. COMMON PROBLEMS
*******************
Are you or other players getting a "Cannot Connect to Server" message? Check out the following points:

1. Get the host of the game to check that they have followed the above instructions exactly. A common
error is not pressing CONFIRM after ticking the "Run as Server" box.

2. Make sure all players have the same version(same patches installed etc.). If not then players
with a different version than the host will not be able to connect. Download the latest patch
from www.sigames.com.

3. If you are using a router or a firewall then you need to open the ports 10093 and 10094 (UDP and TCP).
Refer to the documentation for your router/firewall for instructions on how to do this or
visit http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm.

****************
4. HINTS & TIPS
****************

1. It is recommended that for network games you have ‘Move Matches for TV’ un-ticked in your
preferences. This speeds up play of the game as all players will be playing their matches
at the same time, causeing less waiting time for everyone. It is important that not only the
host, but all clients have this option unchecked at all times.

2. You may also wish to agree on a set amount(and dates) for pre-season friendlies. This allows
all players to prepare their team without causing huge delays for the other players.

3. It is recommended that you have contact to all your players on an instant messaging service,
like MSN or AIM. This means that if players are disconnected or cannot connect you can address
the issue more efficiently.

Network Help Seriously This Time In Detail

All i need to know is firstly where exactly on the computer must i open a port. Windows Firewall? (That is my firewall) i know they're ports 10093 and 10094 what do i call them everything please i'm desperate.

If you also use windows firewall, you'll have two active firewalls.

I believe in the windows firewall you can tell to allow fm to send and receive data. For the router firewall, you need to go to its IP and change the ports' status there. Usually the IP will be 192.168.1.1, but look it up in its manual if it isn't.

i don't where my router firewall is located. so i take i take it you have to open the ports for both your personal firewall and router firewall. screenshots of you having done so in both would be helpful

You might want to actually read my posts before disregarding them. (:/)

I don't use the windows firewall, because my router firewall (and yours should too) blocks all unwanted traffic anyway.

One final word of advise: MANUAL.

sorted, it's my my mates who are having the problems, they have norton firewall, cheers, NO MANUAL REQUIRED

Hamachi

Despite all your help, i still couldn't play a network game. But yes! I found the ultimate solution. Hamachi will solve all your FM network game problems. You can download it HERE. You can also find a vital guide on how to use it specifically for FM HERE. It is the fourth post down, entitled: "A Guide To Using Hamachi".
