National Identity

Ok so I'm writing a research paper on national identity in Spain, with all the conflicts of the basques, catalans, etc.

I just wanted to know more information on the British/English/Scottish/Irish/Welsh feeling, do any of you feel more Scottish than British or any of you Irish fellows feel like your culture is really similar to British culture, etc..

I'm also trying to find a correct distinction between a nation and a country, in order to define correctly what each one really means.

interesting. i myself have never thought of myself being british rather than english . but to be honest i've never really given it that much thought.
i'm interested to see the other replies though

In England the North and the South hate each other... because people in the north are ugly, working class slobs and people in the south are dashing sophistacates (with the exception of those that arent).

I haven’t really thought about it either. After watching and playing sports, seeing European TV, etc and shuttling between Canada and Sweden, I’ve realized that it’s not that big a deal. I was born in Canada and they try to instill a national pride in us. In truth, the world’s just a global village and why should I be proud of what some Canuck who I’ve never met did 50 years ago. I’m pretty sick of all the national propogation in Canada and that’s one of the reasons I like Sweden more, they’re more modest and normal. I don’t want to limit myself to feeling like some proud dumb moose f**king Canadian. Candadians try to separate themselves from Americans but they’re only separated by a boundary and it’s the same in other places like Spain with the Basques, Catalans, etc give or take a bit.

I would always call myself English first over British, not to dissociate with the Welsh/Scots/Irish but purely because the English are quite different to the Scots/Irish. Although being English means that I have no national pride or identity out of fear of being branded a racist. :p

And then you get Midlanders stuck in the middle of it all . . . I tend to prefer northeners. Purely because they're not posh and they don't have a stick up their arses like many southeners I know!

Oh, I have. Taking myself as the model of perfect physical perfection and beauty, you are very ugly indeed.

Unless you're from Norfolk in which case you'd be too busy shagging your sister or picking potato's. :)

That's coincedental. There's a street where I live when I'm in Windsor Canada. It's called Norfolk and it's the only slump/ghetto/crime infested place in the whole city. It looks like it's straight out of Detroit.

I think the swedes feel pretty strong about their nationality as any other person would, its just that since they are a free country they dont need to run around campagning (sp.?) it. If you walked around in Barcelona telling people there that they are no different then the people in Madrid I bet they'd have a thing or two to tell you. Im pretty proud because of some things norwegians did back in the days, and I feel a great deal of national pride. I think all people should no matter where you are from.

This is a bit random but this thread's made me remember it from somewhere:

If 80% of people in New York are minorities (Oriental, Black, Mexican, Brown, etc), then why are they called the minority?
