Mixed-performance gameplay

For some reason when I try playing games like FIFA 2008 I get mixed performances. Sometimes it runs perfectly, with no choppy gameplay, etc. and sometimes it's a bit choppy (i.e. if I restart the game). I'm on a laptop btw.

First I thought it was when my battery was charging it was choppy, but I've subsequently ruled that out. Any ideas as to what I might try?
