Messi's Record Appreciation Thread

I'm quite aware of this. That's why I said Allen Iverson and not Carl Lewis. NBA Point Guards require this kind of athleticism. Dwyane Wade's best attribute is his "first step". AI was the king of quickness and body shifting, not just speed. It's also why I'm not discussing american football players, because I don't think that game requires much technique and coordination. But if you've ever played basketball, you do notice how much being a footballer helps you; the games are very similar.

True, 100%. Many athletes played football in their childhood, before switching to their current sports. In terms of a American football player who could be good at football, I think RG3 could be good. He is pretty quick and his decision making is top, not to mention his speed.

There are dozens of Balotelli's in the NFL

I actually think college football has more "would have been great soccer player" types. In the NFL the guys are so specialized and big that I don't think a lot of them could have been great. Their physiques are just so perfect for football, and that's why they are pros, but also why they would have a harder time playing in another sport. The NFL is filled with the greatest rugby team ever, no doubt, but soccer is too different. I think Basketball is the closest.

But man, Denard Robinson, that dude would have been an incredible soccer player.

Not the greatest ever rugby team, some of the greatest individual players - no doubt.

They would be wingers, fullbacks, centres and second rowers, and great at it. But the best halves and five eighths are very rarely big strong and fast guys. Andrew Johns - who many rate the best ever - is 5'10, and stocky. He wasn't that fast or big either. He had a freakish rugby league brain, and skills (passing, catching, kicking, deception, organising) to match

I have no idea what those positions are, but the American Running Back is usually short and "stocky". For example, here is All Pro Ray Rice (5'8'' 212)

He IS fast. And he's the best pass catching RB in the league and also very elusive and hard to bring down.

E: A half looks like a quarterback, basically. Team leader and whatnot. Yeah um, Andrew Luck/RG3 can do that. Cam Newton can DEFINITELY do that.

Anyway it doesn't matter because this is all speculation that would require identical twins (with world class athletic potential) to be raised in completely different cultures and encouraged in those athletic pursuits, and I don't think that happens very often.

If you are fast or not is in the genes, the more explosive tissues you have the faster you are.

It's 65% genetic. Putting it down to how many white and red muscle fibers you have is oversimplifying running.

Yeah exactly. In the case of most halfbacks though, my point is that it's not a physical thing. It's their football brain that makes them the best. And whether or not this would necessarily transfer to another sport is completely hypothetical. We would never know.

The way you have to think to be the best rugby league halfback may be different than a play maker (Quarter Back) in American Football or another sport. We'll never know.

There would be SOME transferable skills, but my point is that to be the absolute best (Messi) requires the planet's to align basically. Someone with the right physical and mental makeup, who happens to start the sport as a junior and play it throughout his career.

To get to Messi's level you couldn't start late, regardless of who you were. You could become world class, yes, but not Messi, Pele or Maradona

Spot on. It's why despite all the new technology and research there are still so few world class players in any sport

Also, I feel like like Cruyff should be there. Moreso than Pele. He probably doesn't go near any scoring records, but he is the true Mufasa to Messi's Simba.
