Messi's Record Appreciation Thread

Messi , Lionel Andres Messi has done it

Lionel Messi wrote his name into the history books on Sunday by grabbing a record 86th goal in 2012, but the Argentine shrugged off his latest career landmark preferring to focus on Barcelona's league campaign.

Lionel Messi wrote his name into the history books as he scored his 86th goal of the year to break Gerd Muller's record of most goals in a calendar year.

The Argentina international scored twice inside the opening half an hour of Barcelona's 2-1 win at Real Betis on Sunday to move ahead of Muller, who scored 85 goals during 1972.

Messi opened the scoring after 16 minutes to draw level with Muller, before moving clear of the prolific German nine minutes later after setting a new world record.

"I've said it a lot, it's nice to beat records but the win for the team is what is important and the points difference at the top," said Messi.

"My goals are to win titles with the team, the Spanish league, Spanish Cup or Champions League is more important than any personal records. My objective at the start of the season was to win another La Liga title."

Barca now sit 11 points ahead of fierce rivals Real Madrid. Another battle between the Spanish giants will take place when the Ballon d'Or award is handed out next month, and Messi is hoping that he or team-mate Andres Iniesta ge the nod ahead of Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo.

"If Iniesta wins, it will be well-deserved for all that he has done, for the way he plays. Again, it will also be a prize for the dressing room," he said.

Manager Tito Vilanova did not hold back his praise for Messi, though, claiming the feat could be just the start of a string of similar records set during his career.

"It seems impossible to score so many goals, let's hope he can add to the record in the games to come," said Vilanova.

"He is still young and gives us so much, even tonight he helped us out defensively when we needed it, he has so many more qualities than just his goals."

Messi sparked fears he would fall agonisingly short of Muller's landmark when he was stretchered off of Barcelona's Champions League match against Benfica in midweek after colliding with keeper Artur.

However, tests subsequently revealed Messi had only suffered bruising to his left knee and the 25-year-old was declared fit to line up in Seville, where he wasted no time in stamping his mark on the match.

Gerd Muller:

He is an incredible player, gigantic.'

Muller, whose record as Germany’s all-time top goalscorer is also under threat from Miroslav Klose, now hopes Messi will add to his tally before the end of the year.

'He’s such a nice and modest professional and I hope he gets one or two more goals in 2012 and that he can then hold onto the record for the next 40 years,' he added.

I've never seen that much of Gerd Muller but it's a shame that both his records look like they'll be broken this season. I recently read an article on Bundesliga Fanatic that suggested that Klose might do well to retire from internationals without breaking his record to preserve it. I would respect Klose tremendously for the altruism, but it would be pretty stupid. Muller's record will always be more impressibe because he achieved the same thing in less matches and Klose has every right to stamp his legacy. He's played, at a good level, for Germany for over 10 years, appearing in 3 World Cups (in which his team never finished earlier than the Semis (although they also haven't won it)). And what's stopping some young gun like Marco Reus saying 'fuck this shit' and exploding, breaking both guys' record.

I'm ignoring the Messi issue because I'm bored with Messi. If I scored so many goals on Be-a-Pro I'd stop playing because it's monotonous and unrealistic. I'm also disgusted that Messi had the audacity not to get seriously injured this week, knowing full-well that I have money on Madrid winning La Liga.

Oh and I changed the name of the thread, Hishashi, because it's not breaking news. Everyone has been expecting this for months now and it's been mentioned already on the forum.

Also, giving a thread the title 'breaking news' is maddeningly ambiguous.

I'm also bored with Messi. Also, this post here, is as far as I'm ever going to go with caring for those records :(

+1

I don't care about records, did anyone talk about Muller's records till this year?

Ok don't all jump on me but I don't think this record should be getting all this hype. It's somewhat randomly selective. I value full season records more than this year-round record because leagues are all based on the footballing schedule not the year schedule.

I think he'll either get a Xavi role or become a classic 9. Presuming his pace will be gone by that time.

Hereby I promise I'll consider him the best player ever once he takes Argentina by the hand and makes them World Champions in Brazil. Until that time no record can convince me.

Yeah, honestly, when I heard about the record I was surprised someone had actually bothered monitoring that sort of thing.

Maradona plays football better than Messi, it's imposible to play better than Maradona, but Messi is arguably the best ever because he has infinite goal which is what it really matters at the end.

Argentina will probably win the world cup in Brazil IMO.

There's a lot of luck and hard work. Under 50% chance for any team to win IMO so it's not something to bet on, especially Argentina who have not proved to be the best. How can Argentina be favorite over Spain?

Because Messi and because Spain already won Euro-World Cup-Euro in a row. Argentina are winning all his games because Messi.
