Memories of '65 - Inter v Pool [P+R]

Interista13

Starting XI
OMG, I am supremely disappointed with this game and once again our chances were ruined by the ref (AGAIN!!!)

In my opinion, the game started pretty well. It was clear Liverpool were unsettled and a bit nervous from the atmosphere, but around the 30th minute they settled in. Hmmm, seems familiar, could it be that Inter was the same in Anfield before Materazzi was gone?????

I thought Inter created some EXTREMELY superb chances that they simply had to put away. That Cruz effort was gold, and he missed it. It seemed as though two-thirds of the Inter attack was well, but they just couldn’t achieve the final third (the shooting part). It seemed as though they were to afraid to just boot it, and they kept passing hoping there would be a gap in the defense. Big no no. I mean, if you’ve got the ball, shoot it d@mmit! It’s now or never!

Second of all the set pieces. Now, Inter had PLENTY from which to put AT LEAST 1 away. But no, Ibra had to choke on all of them. When the first half ended I was buoyant, I thought Inter would come in the second half simply firing.

And then the red card came along. What I have to say to the ref is WOW. That guy had some MAJOR balls to do that. And btw, I called it too in yesterday’s post! But that ref should seriously quit and go back to being a psychologist in Norway. In the first half he slaps a couple of yellow cards, never gives another one to Babel who we must say, had a few dubious moments. And then in the second half the guy just goes crazy. Still, Inter deserves credit, for still playing decent even with 10 men.

So once again, in order to counteract the speculation that referees are helping Inter in Seria A, the refs just screw us over in Europe. Way to go!

Now about the match in general. It’s really a shame that out of all world-class players Inter has, the only one that constantly performs like he’s 20 on any stage is Zanetti. I mean, the man WAS a tractor. At the beginning he made several attacking runs straight through Liverpool’s midfield, as if no player was even near him. I can say that with this match Ibrahimovic has sealed the “big time chocker” title. The guy’s a beast who can change games in a flash and he wasn’t very spectacular at all. Heck, he even missed a golden chance too!! Even Cruz was better than him!

But I thought the defense was surprisingly well composed, I mean when I saw Rivas there I thought it was going to be a disaster. The midfield was pretty good too. Cambiasso did pretty good throughout the game but Viera and Stankovic just phased in and out too much. Stankovic was just way below what he can actually do. I mean, his foot is gold, a few long-range shots and he could have gotten a goal easy.

Before I end this rant I just want to question Mancini’s decisions. Why no Suazo? Why no 3 strikers? Why no Figo? All these players could have really changed the game. If I were him after the first half I would have replaced Burdisso for Suazo and just played with a 3-4-3 formation. But hey, he did a lot of grand things for Inter, but his inability to show himself in Europe will prove his end at Inter. If we do not have a strong finish to the season then bye bye Mancio. Even now I think Moratti is very hesitant to keep him…

It’s just a shame…Inter was a very powerful squad this season and we managed to blow away another UCL season…we had all the right players but they just failed at the last hurdle to put this game in the bag…a shame…

I wish all the best to, Schalke, Roma, BARÇA, and Fenerbahce…

**EDIT**

Mancini to step down this May as coach of Inter. Let the speculation about who the next coach will be begin!

LMAO what the hell was Chivu doing? He was scared of the ball or something when Torres took that shot, wow just horrible. Good thing we did not get him, lol.

4 English teams through, would be funny if one of them does not win it now. Hopefully Liverpool and Chelsea don't make it to the finals.

We apologize for keeping the yellow too long
Yellow Card
Good game Inter. I guess I expected you guys to do that extra bit more and get a first half-goal. I don't like like 11 against 10 in the CL....if the teams are evenly matched, it can be quite misleading for the team that wins[see below].

I know what you mean......I would have liked to win the tie 11 against 11. This gives us a bit of a false sense of confidence. We just sat back really. I wasn't as impressed as the final scoreline seems to suggest I should be..........

I would rather say 7 teams from Europe and Manchester United.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic was *******.Even though he has scored 20 odd goals this season......most of them are of no significance.....because out of those goals he has scored nine from the penalty and only onw against a TOP 5/6 side(that too a penalty against Roma).....this somehow proves that he is not that good a Big Match player and a players capabilities are known from how well he plays in the Big matches.....But He is a very good player and may comeback to his glory days......and prove me wrong.....
I think the Burdisso second yellow card was ******.....Is the referee blind or what, huh?

Yet,Liverpool deserved to win on the basis of the two nights.....Also Inter's fans over confidence let them down. You see, that domestic form is hardly ever converted to the European front.....Example-Liverpool and Inter...

But Interista don't worry as I have already completed 80% of your sig...No envity there.....

I think that Moratti should be looking for Mourinho as their new manager.....But Barcelona might have already booked him...Bad Luck there....

Cheers!!!

gotta agree with most everything you've said there, except the Zlatan issue ...

"higher" than Inter? come on ... Inter is a really good team, amongst the best, but they were completely luckless in both ties ... I'm sure they will only be stronger and better next season ...

no idea what's up with Cristi ... has he come to believe the negative hype that he has a glass foot? he doesn't look a shadow of the legendary player he was at Ajax (and mind you, I'm not talking Eredivisie, he was stellar in the Champions League) and his first couple of years at Roma ... I really hope he can regain whatever it is he has lost since that time ...

props (Y) for an honest and non-gloating post! it's good to see people gracious not just in defeat, but in victory too ...

which match were you watching? Zlatan's close control was brilliant as he held off more than one defender on quite a few occasions ... he almost always -- along with Pupi Zanetti -- set the Inter attack going ... and what about that brilliant pass to Cruz, which should have been buried or passed to Deki for the tap-in? how different would the match and the opinion of Zlatan's contribution have been if that had been taken?

after a man was sent off again, what exactly did you want him to do? I remember more than once when Julio Cesar [et al] just hoofed the ball up front, but to the complete other side of the pitch relative to where Zlatan was ... both Zlatan and Inter only played 80 minutes over 2 games with 11 men on the pitch ...

as for this "big match choker" nonsense: people have such fickle memories ... Zlatan made his name at Ajax when, along with Cristi, Mido, and Raffie vdV, they stormed to the quarters of the Champions League and were 30 seconds away from upsetting Milan at the San Siro for a spot in the semis ... he was a beast during his first season with Juve in the Champions League when he took both Bayern's and Real's defence to school ... he's scored 5 in this season's campaign, along with a contender for goal of the season ... but when the team faces opposition who play anti-football, then anyone would need support from teammates to put in the hard tackles, give him the possession to either shoot or produce the sublime ... how much support did he really received? how much luck has his side gotten?

I see by your avatar and your comment below that you support Man Yoo and Cristiano Ronaldo ... how amazing have some of his teammates been -- from defence, midfield, and attack? which solo big-match performance has Cristiano Ronaldo produced in Europe? and don't tell me that "the Roma match" is a prime example -- every Man Yoo player including the overhyped Carrick had a good day, and every Roma player had a nightmare ... it was a one-off, and won't happen again too soon ...

I have no doubt that Zlatan will prove you and all the other doubters wrong, and it will be sooner rather than later ...

Xifio.....Don't get on my nerves mate.......

I have always regarded Zlatan Ibrahimovic very highly from his early days.....You know what, when players like Ibra create a niche for himself....you always come to expect good things from him as the standard he has set is very high.....

Football is a game of taking the right chances....and when you don't take the golden chances people forget you.....10 years down the line people will say that Liverpool won that Game but they will not say that Cruz and the other guys missed chances created by Ibrahimovic and that is why they lost...the record books will show a Liverpool win and a Torres Goal scored from the most unfancied of places....Torres taking that half a chance is what counts at the end of the day..

And also don't talk about Ronaldo and Manchester United....I have never ever said that they are the Greatest.I was just trying to joke there....Manchester United's play is regarded the world over and that is why they have reached the position where we see them now.....As for Ronaldo,He sometimes falters during the big European matches because of the weight of expectations he has on his shoulders......His goal against Arsenal this year in League proves he can be that good a player in the Big Matches as well......Micheal Carrick is a very good player who is underhyped I think, rather than overhyped...his passes and quick movements are a delight to watch....

I just hope that Inter can reach the finals of next years Champions League guided by their new manager and also win this years league.....

Let us all stay happy!

Cheers!!!!!!

Look guys, I have always LOVED Ibrahimovic. He is my favorite player (next to Zanetti) and he has the strengths to become a legend. Not only do I think that but I KNOW that. Heck even my sig is with Ibrahimovic! :P

Now, when the season began, I agree with Xifio, Inter was without question one of the strongest teams in Europe. I thought the CL was in the bag. With Ibra in full swing nothing could stop us, as we even clearly showed in the group stages.

Now my problem with this tie was 2 things:

1. I actually did not care who would go on as long as we would see two intense legs (as we should) between two enormous teams. I didn’t care if Liverpool would win as long as I knew the matches were hard-fought and I’d know Inter tried everything in their power. However, the refs ruined that experience in both legs.

2. We never got a fair assessment of Inter’s true potential BECAUSE of the referees and that I feel is simply unfair. I am SURE that the scoreline in Anfield would have been different had Materazzi not been sent off so early. And I was just as Sure that Inter WOULD get 2 goals yesterday had it not been for Burdisso’s red. I mean, Inter were knocking on goals in the first half, so they were bound to go through.

That’s why I felt this tie was unfair. In both legs, Inter was crippled and they just couldn’t do anything about it. That’s why I don’t blame them for losing hope after the sending off. You just feel defeated…

Now about this Ibrahimovic thing…

Like I said, I have always admired him, but let’s face it, he is at Inter, so he is in the big time now. It doesn’t matter how he performed at Ajax if he cannot perform in big games now. Now he is at his highest and he is in the limelight. Look at Kaka last year. He too was like Ibrahimovic for AC Milan and Kaka took full advantage of the opportunity. In big games, he would be very influential. And that is why I consider (for know because I’m sure it will change) Ibra a big game chocker.

Yeah, he did make wonderful fliks here and there and fended off defenders. But at his skill, he should have done A LOT (and we all know that) more. And he didn’t do his main job, which was to score.

That’s what was wrong with Inter. They dominated, they made chances, but they never put them away.

And Xifio I agree, Ibrahimovic will very soon in my opinion, become very prolific and feared in Europe like he is in Italy, but for now, he failed.

Maybe Ibrahimovic could have shined alongside Suazo or Figo, but that is Mancini’s fault.

Now for this coach thing…I’m happy Mancini’s leaving because he has proven he can’t perform in Europe. It’s harsh but he’s had his chances and he squandered them…I want someone who will do good both domestically and in Europe. I pray with all my heart that Benitez will not come though.

Btw, personally, I believe Mancini wants to resign because if Italy do poorly in Euro 2008, Donadoni will be sacked and Mancini could have a shot…it seems likely…
