He was always considered very good, but not at the top of his profession. There's been a very weird revisionism on Scholes in the last 2 or 3 years and I don't like it. He wasn't the Xavi of England okay, don't believe everything Fergie says or Xavi might imply in a fawning interview when those guys under Pep consistently over hype other teams and players.

You've won the Champions League 2/4 times Scholes has been in the side. 1999 he didn't play through suspension (a common thing in his career because he was a total **** in the Roy Keane mold), 08 he was subbed when the game was even, and given nothing more than token appearances in the last two.

Very good and very consistent from year to year, but he's not as good as many people have started to claim the past few years.

Help?

Look at his passing and control when he comes on. His one touch passes are as accurate as i have ever seen. The reason he was reduced to only having cameo appearances in the last 2-3 years is because he is already 36 and his legs can't keep up with the intensive pace of big CL games, especially a CL final with Barca. If Rooney was worn out after 45 minutes, how do you think Scholes would fare?

United fans have always ranked him very highly, just like we rate Giggs very highly. Its only because our team underperformed on the CL stage and English and Wales NTs are ****, that these two guys don't get the worldwide recognition they deserve (in my opinion). But if you think Xavi was hyping Scholes for mind games, then how about Zidane saying Scholes is the most technically gifted player he has ever come up against?

Players never have a bad word to say about each other (or conversely their hate is clearly biased). I generally don't take their opinions seriously. But for the record I consider Zidane as massively overrated as well, although certainly in a higher class than Scholes.

Thread is also funny for some completely ridiculous meltdown by me which must have been provoked in some other thread at the time... I hope. Whatever I was 17.

Anyway, I like Scholes, I think he's very good. He's not a great. 2001 was his prime, and you yourself have Patrick Viera and Roy Keane (neither considered the "best midfielder for the past 20 years) rated ahead of him.

"Why are you acting like such a jealous pr*ck? Your jealousy digusts me. Your argument is crap and pointless. Just because United have a lot of good players, you have to criticise. Why are you? Because at the end of the day they do have the best players, and the others have to do the catching up?!!!!!!!!"

Kind of a weird rebuttal against the defending European Champions, especially when the most talent was at Madrid.

Im sorry, if you think Scholes is over rated then you think you have more knowledge of football than every player that plays the game, every manager that manages the game and every coach that coaches the game. i think you don't. why the fans of today think dribbling = football skills ill never know.

A true legend of the game and a perfect role model on and off the pitch. He never got involved in any nonsense with the press (like Giggs, but then he blew it right at the end) - he just let his football do the talking for him. OK, he couldn't tackle for toffee, but he had it in all the other areas - passing, shooting, vision. Also he stayed at Utd for his entire career - not many players can say that and they'll get fewer and fewer as time goes on. The good news is he's staying at Utd, as a coach!

Funny enough I was saw Scholesy as a goal scorer from midfield and that was a bit subdued over the latter years of his career. Possibly due to his changing roles within the team. He was great when playing in behind Van Nistelrooy and Solsksjaer.

He's was at one stage the best striker of the ball in England. I remember his wonder strike in the game against us at the Bridge in 02', but the best performance that I saw him was the 6-1 mauling of Newcastle. He scored 4 goals I think in that game.

The only downside was that for a midfielder he was a horrible tackler of the ball.

Huh. Ah, well. He can talk all he wants, words don't win football games. Thanks for the link.

Agreed. Madrid came out to win a game and we hammered them 5-0, Mourinho plays for draws against us and then claims he is closer to us than other teams, pfff.

I have always admired United's style of play, don't really think Madrid would control the game against United, I bet they would sit back and defend against you guys too.

They might play more on the counter attack because Mourinho has always prefered that style, but I feel like you're implying that they'd park the bus which I completely disagree with. I think possession would be about even, maybe even slightly to Madrid. And I think United fans above all else realize how incredible Ronaldo is, and the truth is that he's taken his game a step higher since going to Spain. 40 or 41 goals in La Liga is unheard of.

Except for that other ronaldo. just sayin'.
Edit: to clarify, that's not taking anything from the godlike force that cristiano has been this year. just pointing out that it has been done before.

With Scholes, Hargreaves, Neville and Van Der Sar gone, will be interesting to see how things go in the summer. Neville has already been replaced though.

Probably Van Der Sar too, but things are far from being confirmed yet.

Are you saying Great Ronaldo scored 40 goals in La Liga? Because he didn't, it was 34. And overall it's 53-47 in Crissy's favor. Plus 16 assists. just sayin'.

It has not been done before, that was the highest goal mark in the history of the Spanish Top Division.

what do you lot think about Nasri coming to united? I personally think it will be a great signing. Adds creativity and technique to our midfield.
