If I'm not wrong, the winners of the Europa League starting next season get to qualify for the following season's Champions League. So for once, the tournament will hold some kind of significance next year. Not that Moyesy's United are good enough to win it...

Agreed. And as far as i know Europa League doesn't bring in a lot of money either, plus playing on Thursday evenings when you've got league games in the weekends would be a further distraction.

I'd rather be without EL so we could concentrate on doing well in the league again. See Liverpool this season, no European football and they're finally getting their act together in the EPL, although it has taken them 5 years or something..

So i'd say no.

EXACTLY!

Good post. Every disappointing team in Europe will use this as a way forward - Inter, ManUnited, possibly PSV.

Whoa! I expected us to get hammered to be honest, but i have to say that Moyes got his tactics right this time, although there wasn't much alternative besides parking the bus. I think Mourinho and Di Matteo would be proud about the way we handled it. I wish Welbeck could finish though..

Vidić had a great game, scored our goal plus was really good in defense. Damn i'm gonna miss this guy when he leaves next season.
Büttner did surprisingly good as well.. I was a bit disappointed in Fellaini, the guy can look so lazy on the pitch at times, and he failed to mark Schweinsteiger for the equalizing goal.
Wasn't particularly impressed by Kagawa either, he couldn't keep possession many times, because of getting outmuscled off the ball too often, but with 30% of possession he isn't the kind of player you'd be relying on.

Both Javi Martinez and Schweinsteiger will be suspended for the next leg (+ Thiago still injured), whilst Dante will be back. I'm not getting my hopes up, but at least i think we did well tonight. I hope we can do something similar in Munich.

From Team Moyes's perspective, this is an extraordinary result but not for Man Utd's standards. Bayern got 1 away goal at Old Trafford which means that we have to score at least 1 goal against them at their stadium. That's gonna be extremely difficult.

Buttner was pretty good I have to say. Robben was able to get around him at times and put in crosses or shots but any defender would struggle against him. He was solid.

Defense was amazing. Very organized and disciplined compared to games against City and Liverpool. Carrick did very well helping the defense and I thought Fellaini did very well defensively for the most part, but was really really poor forwards. He also lost a couple of balls. At least he offers physical strength in midfield, something we have been lacking for years and his headers are important. These attributes are very important against an attacking team.

Well considering the fact that we faced the team that is being considered as the best team in the world right now, drawing the game and just conceding one goal was extraordinary indeed. Especially taking our form against stronger opponents into account recently.

The aging Vidić and Ferdinand duo did very well, but the fact that they defended mostly in or near the box all the time helped big time, since they are not like they were 5-6 years ago. When we pressured them in the beginning of the second half, and actually kept the ball in their half, i got really concerned when Bayern won the ball back and had a chance to counter. Playing a higher line in defense for a longer period of time would be a suicide against Bayern. Vidić is still very reliable, but Ferdinand not so much.
I also think that Jones did a pretty decent job as a right back, kept Ribéry quiet throughout the match. Valencia's presence there helped a lot as well. I doubt that Rafael would have done so well.

Now the problem is that we need to score at least one goal for starters in Munich, which means we cannot go there with the same tactics again (parking the bus), unless we somehow get an early goal. Just relying on counter-attacks wouldn't be such a good idea, but there's not really not much else we can do either to be honest. Yet again they're not the kind of team who'll sit back and defend, so they'll be looking for a goal or two to finish things off i think.
I just hope we won't get humiliated and this game showed that even Bayern is not that invincible.

But i have to say that right now i'm a lot more optimistic about our chances than i was after the draw when we got Bayern as our opponents.

Hehe. Don't give me that.

Without your top striker against the top team in Europe? You did okay, even for Man United's standards. These results have occurred before.

If you were doing better in the league, then this 1-1 would have felt different. Almost like a bit of an achievement, since 2 good teams were facing eachother.

I think you're right. It is an achievement for Team Moyes but if Ferguson would have been in charge, it would have been disappointing to have drawn at OT and conceded a goal (i.e. Bayern got an important away goal)

I thought about that as well, it would be one option. But he doesn't have the same workrate as Welbeck does (doesn't track back enough, which is important against a team like Bayern), he isn't as good at linking up with others and his first touch and ball control worry me. Plus the lack of playing time he has had this season would be a concern as well. And he has shown that he's more productive when coming on as a substitute.

Although he has shown that he's more than capable of scoring important goals, when on form he doesn't need many chances.

Basically both of them could start, with Welbeck and Valencia on the wings, Rooney somewhere where he usually operates, and Chicha on top. But I think i'd give Welbeck and Kagawa a go at first, and bring Chicha on later depending on the circumstances. I just don't want to see Young or Cleverley.

Arsenal or Manchester City would not have secured a better result had they been in United's shoes.

Even with Ferguson, with today's squad this is a huge result. You faced a team who raped half of Bundesliga and won the title in mid-March.

Fellaini stands at six feet and four inches, yet somehow lost 83 per cent of his aerial battles against Bayern Munich. He is a big, imposing central midfielder but lost 76 per cent of his tackles.

Ehh

Hehh.. I don't know what to say about these stats, but he had a pretty poor game, and looked quite lazy at times.

I saw a longer replay of the Schweinsteiger's goal, and he actually saw him starting a run into the box even before the cross came in, but just jogged along and finished his jogging watching the ball flying into the net. So i still partly blame him for their goal.

Help?

The result was ok, but the game was total shit. Lucky for us, Pep loves passing rather than shooting.

And lets not kid ourselves that we need atleast 1 goal. Bayern is guaranteed atleast 2 goals at home. This result was clearly a fluke.
