I still haven't watched La Haine ... I have a copy, but Christmas season means we're watching the blockbusters in theatres, rather than staying at home ...

did you get to watch it? (Y)

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus - pretty good, wasn't really in the mood for something like it but I enjoyed it.

Dear John - This was the movie I seen last night . it was more about the romance of a teen and so many of teens are there to see the movie "Dear John" does able to give some assistant for the movie and lot of science is there as we speak of the drama in the movie between the dad and daughter at the later part. It was quite nice too.

The Book Of Eli - Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman. Good movie. Worked particularly well for me, having just completed Stephen Kings' book - "The Stand" which would make one hell of a movie too.

So as the Oscars are approaching, I'm nearing my goal of seeing all 10 movies that are nominated for best film. Here are the ones I have seen so far and what I thought about them.

Avatar
8/10
The special effects and overall grandeur of this film make it an event and not just another movie. Sadly, I was left completely underwhelmed by the unoriginal story. Definitely worth seeing though, preferably in 3D in theaters. This movie just isn't going to translate in your house, not even if you have a 50 inch widescreen.

District 9
8/10
Very original film. If you can make it past the first 20 minutes without going "wtf" multiple times and turning it off you will be rewarded with another hour and a half of awesome film making. It was a great year for sci-fi with this film, Avatar and Star Trek.

The Hurt Locker
8/10
This is by far the best film that has been made thus far about the current war in Iraq. The acting is great and there are multiple scenes that keep you on the edge of your seat. It missed something though and I can't quite put my finger on what that something was.

Inglourious Basterds
9/10
Props to Tarantino for writing yet another jewel. This movie is right up there with Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction in terms of original screenplay. Great performances from the entire cast as well. This is probably my favorite movie of the year.

A Serious Man
6/10
This is the new Coen Bros. film. Maybe I just didn't get it as well as I should have because I'm not Jewish but this movie just didn't do it for me. It is supposed to be a dark comedy that slightly resembles the story of Job from the Bible. While it has it's usually dark comedic scenes that we have come to expect from the Coens, it just feels more like a home movie to be included among the other films on this list in my opinion. This film being nominated is just a testament to how respected these guys are in Hollywood.

Up
7/10
Once again Pixar delivers but I can comfortably say that Wall-E, Toy Story 1 and 2, Finding Nemo and The Incredibles were all better films than Up. It was visually stunning and the story was original and funny but when compared to the ones I mentioned above I just don't think it reached those heights. I think the only reason this is even nominated is because we now have 10 movies in the category as opposed to the usual 5. By the way this is only the second ever animated film to be included in the best movie category, Beauty and the Beast being the other.

Up in the Air
9/10
Jason Reitman is approaching the "I will watch everything he directs from this point forward" territory. Add Up in the Air to Thank You for Smoking and Juno and this guy already has 3 solid 8s or 9s in his resume and he's not even 40 years old yet. This is a fantastic film and I wish the Academy will award it best film over Avatar (they're the only two that I think really have a chance to win it). It's a great movie for the times we live in and Clooney's performance is Oscar-worthy. In fact I think Clooney should win best actor because no other actor could play that role like he did. That was THE George Clooney role. I haven't seen Crazy Heart yet but I doubt Jeff Bridges would change my opinion.

I haven't seen Precious, An Education and The Blind Side yet.

A 1993 Ethan Hawke movie. Saw it because i happen to see a documentary before regarding the 1972 rugby team from Uruguay whose plane crashed on the Andes and the survivors lived till they got rescued by eating the bodies of the ones who died in the crash.
Great history and very motivating story.

Been a while since I've posted here, but I'll type up the movies I've seen recently...

I didn't care much for The Hurt Locker, either. If you would have told me it was a documentary, I probably would have believed it. But other than that, I don't see the hype.

Zombieland - Awesome! This is the type of movie I can watch many times. I loved everything about it, especially the cameo by Bill Murray. (H)

The Serious Man - Oh man, I can't believe I sat through this movie. It was extremely dry and unfunny, bordering depressing at times. I'm surprised as to why the main character didn't just off himself or go on a shooting spree. Horrible movie.

Letters From Iwo Jima - Great movie, very touching. Clint Eastwood is a badass director.

Year One - Meh.

Incredible Mr. Fox - Awesome movie! Granted I watched it high, but I found it hilarious and very unique. I'll definitely catch it again when it comes out on DVD.

The Book of Eli - It was good, but I thought it would be better given the hype. Nice twist during the end, though. Denzel is a great actor, and Mila Kunis is pretty hot. Funny I used to think she was unattractive in That 70s Show...

I thought Hurt Locker was awesome but yeah I'd still only give it an 8/10.

I saw Precious last night. I felt like drinking a fifth of whiskey afterward.

Sick movie, Leo and Scorsese can't go wrong!

Terminator 3: Salvation - I wasn't expecting much, and it ended up being an average movie.

2012 - Good movie if your looking to see things blowing up. And all those close calls, talk about extremely ridiculous... but good nonetheless.

Up- Very good and enjoyable movie..

Yeah, the scenes from the sci-fi part made you wish we had that technology, so you could just fly out in the universe on your own, whenever you wanted to, right? :(

Just saw the movie.. and yeah! what he said.... :(

Pineapple Express. It's actually really funny, liked it better than Superbad. Franco is just fantastic in this one, first time I've laughed out loud while watching a movie in a while.

District 9 - Pretty good... amateurish acting in bits, but that seemed to be mostly by amateurs, so that was cool. I liked it. (Y)
