Is This Becoming The Poorest WC Ever?

Payaah

It has been an entertaining WC. But frusturating at same time with all these underdogs messing up their chances: IC vs Holland, Australia vs Italy, Mexico vs Argentina.....

i concede yes that the most important matches are yet to come except the chances of some epic 3-2 type matches seems remote. It would be nice to see some open games, rather than the predictable 1-0 affairs that have been occurring. Right now this stands as the second lowest scoring WC ever, which is worrying, as the goalscoring has decreased every tournament since 1994, especially in the knockout stages of this and the 2002 WC. I guess I miss the era of the individual superstar like Maradona, Cruyff, Pele, Platini etc who symbolised their WC's. That type of player no longer exists.

It's sad that such a high profile sport like Football has such a poor
standard of refereeing. Compare the quality of referees in Football
against Rugby (union & league) referees and there's a huge gap.
Being Football is the biggest sport in the world, you would naturally
think the quality would be second to none, but it's far from that.

I wouldn't say Rugby referees are much better , each has there own rules and its ahrd to compare because players don't dive or fake injury in rugby. I think Blatter has to take some of the blame for putting pressure on the referees to protect skill, hopefully we will be rid of the **** soon.

Unlike previous WCs, all great teams are through. As a result, we're already having some serious football clashes at this stage, like the Portugal x Netherlands or the Spain x France. Come one, any of those fixtures is SF worthy.

Overall, the WC so far has been a 6,5, but with great potential ahead. We've had some amazing goals so far, but no major upsets. I've seen glimpses of great football here and there, but most games have been under par.
FIFA should seriously consider giving everybody a 2-month break before the WC.

I'm thinking this one will go down as one of the best ever: the Germans look unstoppable, Italy is as lucky as they've ever been, Spain embarrasses everybody, Brazil has 3 of the 5 best players alive, England and Argentina are sleeping giants and Portugal is playing with a lot of heart and determination.
It's the unpredictability that makes for a great competition and it can't get any better than this. (Y)

Here's my top 3 WCs (I only judge the ones I've watched):
3 - Spain 82
2 - USA 94
1 - Mexico 86

Worst ever:
2 - Korea 02
1 - Italia 90

apparently the goalscoring is very high so far...an in equal ratio are the Bookings.

yes all these questions have started to arise from the 25th i.e. when england bored everyone against ecuador and when holland-portugal and mainly ivanov created a demonstration of bookings.

other than that, the world cup has had QUALITY goals.

How about ronaldinho, ronaldo, henry, lampard, messi, van nistelrooy, figo, shevchenko, tooti, del piero ?!!

I know most of them did nothing in that tournament but they are still great.
I believe ronaldinho can do what maradona did in 1986.

i dunno.. this world cup hasn't been boring, but it hasn't been all that amazing either.. but i think its rather good then bad.. there haven't been many teams trying their hearts out to win you don't see as much dedication, take the czechs for example.. they didn't push forward against the italians one bit, even with a man down.. i mean its the damn world cup, take some risks and show some entertainment... you know? that kinda stuff... i can remember 2 good comebacks.. spain vs tunisia, tunisia vs saudi arabia, oh and brazil vs japan i guess... but the round of 16 has been fun! Portugal vs Netherlands, Italy vs Australia... Germany vs Sweden was fun to watch.. there's still brazil vs ghana, spain vs france (go spain).. i mean, best is yet to come as rusi said

the problem is that there are TOO many such players nowadays, so one of em doesnt get singled out.
thats why we cant say it's cryuff's WC or Maradona's WC.
it's a teams WC nowadays.
the play is more technical rather than individuals being offered acres of space to shoot and score

maybe its because club football is being of prime importance to the players alongwith the huge bucks and european ambitions

Not every match can be a thriller. There are poor matches in any tournament but so far i think most games have been quite good.

The officiating hasn't helped. Due to numerous FIFA directives, refs have had to blow up for the most menial of fouls thus not letting the game flow.

Nothing has lived up to Holland/Czech Republic in Euro 04 but that was one of the best matches i've ever seen so is going to take some beating.

I think this world cup is bad because the ref's are ruining the games and some of the big teams aren't playing well.

Exactly, the refs are ruining many matches, there are many poor games and most of the big teams play bad. And I don't think the best is coming, matches like Portugal-England, Ukraine-Italy will be boring.

JtK: If you were in a quarter-final, with teams going against each other at the same level, do you think they will Gung Ho against each other? Of course not...

P.S: Isn't Italy always boring to watch?

I gotta say this is the worst World Cup I've ever experienced. The refs have ruined many of the games so far and the amount of goals scored hasn't satisfied me at all.

The best WC was the 94 one. Brolin, Dahlin, Kennet Andersson...ahh brings back memories (H)
There were also a lot of great games in that tournament. Holland-Brazil for example..what a game! Haven't seen too many good games in this WC but I hope the best is yet to come..

To me a lot of people remember the WC through how many goals were scored and how people scored them, true but to me thats not the whole reason behind what makes it a great world cup. Considering group games and knock-out games there has been some very good games so far..

- Australia's come back against Japan winning it 3-1 in the last what 10min or so scoring 3 goals.

-The contraversy behind this stupid ref in the Italy - Usa match and the Portugal - Netherlands match is what made the games that much exciting even though in the Portugal game I was practically screaming at the tv. But still very entertaining matches..

- The very first match in the WC between germany and Costa Rica was a very good match.

- Italy and Australia even though thats a bad way to go on a penalty kick, but still a good even match, in which you could say the same thing about Ukraine and Switzerland, boring yes in a way but at the same time I was on the edge of my seat to see who will win.

- Mexico and Argentina was the same thing, who will win in extra time, it was 1-1 the whole game and in the end Rodriguez took a chance and made a beautiful goal to win it before going into the shoot-out.

I could go on and on, but in the end has this WC been a crappy WC, I would have to say no, to me its been a very good WC with some good games and great plays and goals. No we do have a lot more games to go so to me I think the best is truly yet to come.

Well after this morning's game I think we should close this thread.

Great game by Brazil and Ghana. Exciting to watch, speed, agility, skillfull passing.

One of the best if not the best of the WC thus far.
