I'm thinking of getting a PS3...

Ok guys, i'm thinking of buying a PS3 in the next month or so, here's why:

1. I've not bought any form of game or games machine since Football Manager 2006 so i feel like i really should at some point.
2. My old PS2 is starting to have serious problems, so a 60gig one has backwards compatibility, i THINK?
3. I'm not getting a Wii because i'm happy just being a geek thanks.
4. I'm not getting an 360 because the controller is like using a kettle to play games with.
5. GTAIV im hoping will be good.

Ok, so basically, im wondering whether you guys think it'd be a good idea, what are the best games for it, or whether you'd do something different? Also, how good is online? Or is it shiiittttttttttttt?

Just to note, don't even suggest a 360 because i can't physically use the controller, so if you have one and regularly rape it from behind, just exit the thread.

Yeah, in the UK only the 60GB units have backwards compatability...not sure if you'll be able to find any in the shops now though.

Best games at the moment I'd say are COD4, Uncharted, Ratchet & Clank:Tools of Destruction in that order. GT5:Prologue just came out today on PSN (Sony's version of Live) & Blu-ray, so if you're a fan of racing games I'd definitely recommend picking that up too...playing online is a blast but I can't wait till we can race friends (at the moment there are no private races but this should be introduced in a patch in the near future).

The PSN is pretty rubbish compared to Xbox Live in terms of content but then again it is free and hopefully this about to change with a lot of full PS1 & PS3 games set to be released in the next couple of months, like Wipeout HD.

GTA is being developed with the 360 on focus. Forget the times when sony was a lone playah in the console market. MS has most exclusives and MS has the best new franchise titles. Sony is just left with 10++ year old franchise games GranT and MGS. I hate Microcrap but they got the better games. As for the.. PS3 not being fully taken advantage of by current games... well dunno, but if thats true then the games must be really bad, because the PS3s hardware apart from a better bundled optical drive it doesnt really have that much thats better. Its graphics adaptor (which is the most important part for gaming) is, if anything, slightly less advanced as it is just a G70 nvidia chipset, whereas the xboxs one is, a premature one tho, but still a newer developed gpu silicon. (to put it in nvidia-ish GPU silicon terminology, it's like a... pre-release version of the G80, meaning almost as good as being a whole generation ahead in development)

The sexbox tho has that redring thing.. So it's you choice. Either way you get a relatively cheap machine that will serve your gaming purposes well.

btw, I believe the PS gamepad is one of the worse things that ever happened to gaming. It was good for mid 90s. (guess we disagree on the 360 controler... )

I got a PS3 a little while ago and I'm really happy with it.

Like I think I mentioned in another thread, I mostly use it as a media center rather than strictly for gaming but that's mostly due to the fact that I just don't get into video games as much as I used to. That being said, there's a bunch of PS3 games coming out this year that I'm really looking forward to (some exclusive, some not). ie. LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2, Top Spin 3, etc.

One of the main reasons I got it was actually for the blu-ray capability. Around here, the lower-end stand alone blu-ray disc players are right around the same price as a PS3 (which plays blu-ray, plus does so much more). The decision was easy..

Just to readdress the balance a little

It's been confirmed that GTA will be virtually identical in terms of graphics on both consoles with the only difference being that there will be extra DLC (which has not yet been revealed) on the Xbox 360 due to Microsoft paying extra for the privilege.

Also, I think which console has the best line-up of exclusives in 2008 is down to personal preferences. This article summarises some of the big exclusives on each console quite well I think: http://www.counteragent.com/2008/03/18/big-guns-a-look-at-2008-exclusives-xbox-360-and-ps3/

Out of the two, the PS3 line-up appeals to me more, as it has a greater variety of genres IMO. As for new franchise titles, I'm really looking forward to Little Big Planet, which could possibly be one of the most innovative games ever.

I always thought the same until I actually got a 360, and then I got used to the controller. Nothing will ever be as good as an N64 controller, once you accept that fact you can move on

I'll be getting a PS3 over the next few months for two reasons: 1) Gran Turismo 5 and 2) Final Fantasy XIII.

I'm also thinking about getting a PS3. Especially now because GTA IV is release is closing in, and it almost seems as if the PS3 is another computer. Not to mention the Blu-Ray. So yeah, I want one, too. Maybe I'll try and save up for the MGS bundle in a few months.

I'm planning to get a PS3 but not for a few months yet though (preferably want the 60GB version), there's not enough games that appeal to me that are out for it at the moment. I've still got a PS2 and still like playing games on it from time to time.

I've had countless offers to buy a 360, a mate even tried to sell me his second hand 360 for 100 quid but I'm not interested cos of the Red Ring of Death problem and I'm not too fond of M$ as many of you already know!
