I have noticed many questions recently about the posting of Screen Shots at soccergaming so here is a guide of exactly what to do. This works best if CM is in windowed mode.

1) On CM go to the screen you want to take a screen shot of.

2) Press the 'Print Screen' button (in the top row of your keyboard).

3) Minimise (or exit) CM and go into a basic drawing programme, MS Paint is perfect.

4) Go to the 'Edit' drop down menu and then select 'Paste'.

5) Do any editing you want to do the save the file in the
.jpg format. (I recommend you save it to your desktop as it is easier to find. You can always delete it straight after you've posted it).

6) Go to Soccer Gaming and go to the thread you want to post the screen shot in. Press reply as normal.

7) Where is says 'attach a file' click browse. Find the screen shot (saved in the .jpg format) and double click on it.

8) Click 'Post Reply/Submit New Thread' as normal. Please note it will take longer than normal to post.

9) Sit back and admire your beautiful screen shot.

How to play network/online games...

Starting Network Games

1) Find someone (or many people) you want to play against who has the same version of CM as you. It is best to be in constant contact with them via MSN or a similar instant message programme.

2) Decide which league you want to play in. It is best to pick your teams in advance to avoid dispute.

3) Load up CM01/02 to the main menu

4) Click on 'Network Play'

5) One Player must be chosen as host. This should be the player with the fastest internet connection. He/She should click on 'Start Network Game'

6) Enter a 'Network Game Name'. This can be anything you choose - it doesn't matter and you dont have to remember it.

7) Pick the league you want (it's best to only have one league) and click the 'selected' text next to it. Then click 'continue' in the bottom right hand corner. You can also take attribute masking off at this point if you so desire.

8) When this has finished loading a box will pop up saying 'You may now remove the CM01/02 CD at any time'. Click 'OK' to that and, surprise, surprise, you may remover the CD at any time although you should have it in to save. I find it best to leave it in the whole time.

9) Type in your name as normal and press continue.

10) Select Nationality as normal and click continue.

11) Pick you team as normal and click take control as normal.

12) You should now be on the manager status screen. There is an IP address in the top left (ish) of the screen. This is very important. Give this to everyone else who is joing in your game.

13) The other players all go to 'Network Play' and click 'Join Network Game'.

14) They type in the IP address you gave them and click continue. Then they pick there teams as normal.

15) When you are all ready, all click finish in the bottom right hand corner of the manager status screen.

Restoring and Continuing Network Games

1) When you want to restore a saved network game, the host goes to 'Network Play' and clicks 'Restore Network Game'.

2) He picks a name for the game, it can be different to the original name.

3) He selects the game from the list of the saved games. If ytou have lots of saved games, like me, then be sure to save it as something memorable.

4) Load it up as normal.

5) Give the IP to the other players as normal, and they click 'Join Network Game' as normal and do the same as above only re-taking control of their own teams rather than new ones.

Confusing, I know. Give it a try, however, and you'll soon get used to it. If you want some practise get in touch with me and I'll give you a network game or put you in one of my others that I have running.

Hope this helps,

Zarkov

Minimizing....

I have noticed several people posting about problems with minimizing. If you have the problem that when you minimize CM, the game blacks out, the most likely error is that it's not in windowed mode.

Simply go to 'Game Options' and change to windowed mode.

Release Clause Info....

A release clause is decided with the contract. There are four types: Minimum Fee Release Clause (if another team make a bid of this or higher than you have to accept), Manager Job Release Clause (If the player is offered a manager position you have to let him go), Relegation Release Clause (If you get relegated and a team make a bid above or equal to this clause you have to accept) and Non Promotion Release Clause (If you fail to achieve promotion and the above occurs).

To alter clauses when offering contracts, simply go to the clauses section of the offer contract screen:

How to download and use tactics.

Putting the tactic in the right place...

1) Find the tactic you want to download and click download, or, if someone has sent you an email with an attached tactic, click download attachment.

2) When the download is complete, go to the folder you downloaded the tactic to, right click on the tactic and go to copy.

3) Then, go to my computer and double click on your hard drive (nearly always C:).

4) Open the folder 'Program Files', then open the folder 'Championship Manager 01-02', then open the folder 'tactics'

5) Go to the 'edit' drop down menu and click paste.

Using the tactic in CM

1) Go to your teams 'tactics' screen.

2) Click the 'tactics' drop down menu (near the top left of your screen)

3) Go to load, select the tactic you want to use and click OK.

4) Assign players to positions accordingly.

Coaches Reports.

Dont forget that a very useful way to gain information and opinions on your players is to do a Coaches Report. This can be done simply by going to player screen of the player you want to request a report on and clicking the 'Action' drop down menu. Then simply click on request coach report, choose a coach (I recommend the Assistant Manager) and click OK. You will recieve a report through your news screen.

I recommend you do this for each player at least once a season.

Championship Manager 4 Frequently Asked Questions
Last Revised Thursday, 03 April 2003

Q1. I cant install the game?
A1. If you are running Windows 98 (and maybe Me, and if you try on 95) You may get an error when trying to install the game. The version of Windows Installer that shipped with your OS is old and wont work with our installer. In that case you'll need to download and install: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...FamilyID=CEBBACD8-C094-4255-B702-DE3BB768148F

After installing, reboot. It simply updates windows installer from version 1 to version 2.

If you are running Windows XP, browse the CD and run the file "instmsiw." Once this has finished, restart the computer and then install the game as normal. If your operating system is Windows 98, run "instmsia” restart the computer and then install the game as normal.

b) If your getting an error along the lines of "Installer Error 1607"? (Cheers to Jay from Eidos for this solution)

Goto Start then Run

type

MSIEXEC /UNREGISTER

click ok

(nothing will visibly happen, maybe icons flash on desktop)

then go back to run and type

MSIEXEC /REGSERVER

click ok

(again nothing visibly will happen, however windows is reregistering all components of the installer - which is what error 1607 relates to)

Try and install the game (its been proven to work on a few systems).

Q1a. The patch is telling me to "Please install before using this update" - But Cm4 IS installed!
A1a.A number of people have reported problems with the CM Update tool. What it is doing for a tiny amount of people is asking them to install the game before they patch it. But these people have the game installed. Firstly, I must warn you to be careful and only do exactly what I say. I take no responsibility for people doing this wrong and making a mess of their PC! I must thank 'GWX' for this solution!

What you have to do is go to Start, and click run. In the run box type ‘regedit’ (no comma’s) to bring up the Windows registry editor.

Click on HKEY_CURRENT_USER

Then click on Software,

Then click Sports Interactive LTD,

Then right click on the Championship Manager 4 folder..

Click Permissions on the menu that appears.

In the permissions section give all the users use full permissions..

Now reboot the machine.

When the machine comes back up, try first go into CM4 again..

When that is ok, try and apply the patch again..

If you still have this problem, mail me at [email protected]

Q2. My game wont start, because I’m getting a "...copy protection.." error?
A2. The first thing to you should do is to ensure that you have the CM4 Enhancement Pack 1 (available from www.sigames.com) Second is to make sure the CM4 CD is in the drive when you are attempting to launch the game, and that your CDROM drive recognizes that it is inserted. (As seen in My Computer)

If you have certain CD-burning software installed, such as Nero Burning Rom, or other system tools like Inseektors, Daemon Tools, or others, you may need to disable any processes the software installs, such as the NeroCheck utility installed with Nero.

This problem may also occur if you are running debuggers, decompilers, or CD-ROM Drive emulators on your system, or if you are using Real Mode [DOS] drivers for your CD-ROM drive.

Finally make sure you have a valid copy of CM4 and indeed that you don’t have a no-cd crack or indeed the Crack directory; within which came a No CD crack. Both of these will stop the game working, or will cause problems down the line at best.

Q3. My game wont start, because I’m getting a spinning CD icon and then nothing else?
A3. First make sure you have the patch installed; if the problem is still there contact [email protected] for more info about how to fix this.

Q4. My game just crashed (maybe with a “This Program has performed an Illegal Operation and will be shut down” error”) What can I do?
A4. These errors happen now and again to everyone with all kinds of windows applications, which will include CM4. We have found that more often than not they happen when Windows encounters a conflict with a driver in use in your system. Click on the "Details" button for more information about the error message. If the error is an invalid page fault in module kernel32.dll or module CM4.exe, it is indicative of a driver that is not functioning correctly. Generally, the driver in question will be either the one used by the video or sound card. Since hardware manufacturers update their drivers frequently, the problem is resolved by visiting the manufacturer's website, then downloading and installing the updated drivers.

Your best bets are:
1. Get the latest patch for CM4.
2. Run Scandisk on the drive CM4 is installed on to check it out.
3. Update Windows from http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
4. Get the latest drivers for your hardware from the manufacturer’s website.

We are always glad to help you in the sigames community message board (http://community.sigames.com), what you should do first is run the Direct X diag tool.

Click Start > then run, and then type dxdiag into the box. I box will pop up and it will be busy doing stuff for a few seconds. After that is finished click "Save all information" ; post the contents of that file into your thread asking for help; and we can help you much quicker!

Q5. When I press "Continue” the game crashes back to the desktop?

We are always glad to help you in the sigames community message board (http://community.sigames.com) what you should do is run the Direct X diagnostics tool.

Click Start > then run, and then type dxdiag into the box. I box will pop up and it will be busy doing stuff for a few seconds. After that is finished click "Save all information" ; post the contents of that file into your thread asking for help; and we can help you much quicker!

Q6. I’m running Windows XP and I’m being asked to run scandisk and I can’t find it?
A6. Open My Computer, and then right click on the hard drive CM4 is installed on (usually C: ) Click on Properties and then on Tools in the box that pop’s up. Click on the top box “Error Checking”

Q7. I’m getting an error when opening CM4 “"Error:0x000D: Unable to open full screen mode"?
A7. There are a few ways to sort this out. Firstly make sure your colours are at True Colour (32 bit) and your screen is at least 1024 by 768 pixels.

(Right Click on the desktop, click properties, click settings..

Set Colours on the left to True Colour (32 Bit) and Screen Area to 1024 by 768 pixels)

If you can’t get to 1024 by 768 pixels then refer to question 6 about how to force it into 800 by 600 pixels.

Q8. I want to run the game in Windowed mode, but I can’t. Is there a way to force the game to run in a window?
A8. Firstly to run in a window you have to be in a screen resolution above 1024 by 768 (1152 by 864 is the next one up for example). Now you can try and run CM4 with the -windowed flag.

Click Start > Run > and in the box type in the location of CM4 – c:\program files\cm4\cm4.exe -windowed for example. Now after cm4.exe add “-windowed”. So what you end up putting in the run box is

c:\program files\cm4\cm4.exe –windowed

This forces the game to run in a window.
(you can always right click on the shortcut on your desktop, click on properties and put -windowed at the end of the command that launches the game, if you always want it in a window)

Q9. I’m being asked for the version number of the driver for my NVIDIA graphics card - How do I find it?
A9. It’s a little bit complicated, Right click anywhere on desktop > click properties > click settings > click Advanced...

In the top right of that new window it will tell you your card name "geforce 2 mx" (or whatever type of card it is). Click that name to go into the cards information tab..

At the bottom of this window you will see a driver and version; the version will be along the lines of 6.13.10.4109.

Q10. I’m running Windows XP and have a NVIDIA graphics card and I’m having problems with Windows changing the refresh rate?
A10. Windows XP has issues with changing screen resolutions for games if you use an NVIDIA graphics board. It is a common problem with win9x games, and even games that officially support 2000/XP, that they display at a 60Hz refresh rate when in full-screen mode. This is caused by the way Windows XP interacts with software when the software asks Windows what screen resolutions and refresh rates it can use. In win9x, Windows uses your desktop refresh rate settings for each resolution. But in XP, Windows does not send those settings to software -- it expects software to choose an appropriate refresh rate on its own. Unfortunately, very few applications have their own refresh rate setting option, nor do they try to use the highest available; they just default to the first one Windows gives them, which is usually 60Hz. This problem is universal enough that I really think Windows XP should have a function to set the default refresh rates that it passes to software, but alas, it does not.

There are pieces of software that will get around this here – http://www.ntcompatible.com/faq332.shtml

On a side note, anybody not using latest NVIDIA graphics drivers should upgrade to the latest set from www.nvidia.com.

Q11. Can the resolution be changed to 800 by 600?
A11. .Yes, but the game is not designed to look like that, the game is designed for 1024 by 768. The minimum resolution is 1024 by 768. If you have to you need to, you can try this mode by using the following -

c:\program files\cm4\cm4.exe -small_screen

You can right click on the shortcut on your desktop, click on properties and put -small_screen at the end of the command that launches the game, if you always want it in on your small screen

Q12. I have poor eyesight/my monitor is bad and I can’t see the ball on the 2D match screen, is there anything I can do?
A12. There is indeed! In your Game\Data folder there is a file called init.cfg. What you need to do first is right click this file and click properties, and uncheck the read only box so you can save your changes. Then you want to enter “BIG_BALL”
(Exactly as it is there, with the inverted commas). This makes the ball much bigger and should help you seeing it!

Q13. I have problems connecting to a network / Internet game under Windows XP?
A13. It is quite likely that the Built in Win XP firewall is enabled and thus blocking the port CM uses. To disable it follow these instructions:
-- Go to the Setting section in the start menu
-- Click Network Connections
-- Right click on the Connection and click Properties
-- Go to the advanced tab and un-tick the ‘enable firewall’
A better option may be to open ports 9091 on UDP and 9092 on TCP rather than to disable the firewall. You can add these ports by going to your Connection Properties --> under the tab ’Advanced’ > click settings in the bottom-right hand corner and add CM twice - one for port 9091 on UDP and then one for 9092 on TCP. It’s much safer this way because you don’t run the risk of being hacked. If you still have problems, post a message in the cm forums with the contents of the net.out file (found in the CM directory) as well as the usual details.

Q14. Which is the Pre Game/Save-Game Editor to use for CM4?
A14. There are no official or unofficial game editors for CM4.

Q15. I am having trouble downloading the patches. I keep getting cut-off and have to start downloading again.
A15. Use a Download Manager like GetRight. You can get it here:www.getright.com

Q16. Game freezes / stops when loading game / saving / end of season, if I press Ctrl+Alt+Del it says: Not Responding?
A16. Wait longer - Not Responding doesn't mean that it has crashed; it just means the program is too busy to respond to Windows. If you leave it, it will eventually get past this; the processing at the end of the season can take especially long. If it does crash, you usually get an error message or it crashes back to the desktop.

If you are convinced it’s a problem then ask a question in the sigames community messageboard (http://community.sigames.com). To speed up the process what you should do is run the Direct X diag tool first.

Click Start > then run, and then type dxdiag into the box. I box will pop up and it will be busy doing stuff for a few seconds. After that is finished click "Save all information" ; post the contents of that file into your thread asking for help; and we can help you much quicker!

Q17. Are save games compatible from older game versions to this new version? E.g. from CM 01/02 to CM4?
A17. No, they are not compatible. Save games from different versions of CM (like 00/01 etc) are not either. You can load CM4 Demo saves with the Full version though.

Q18. I’m having trouble installing off the CD?
A18. Copy the contents to a place on your hard drive and install the game from there by running setup.exe.

Q19. The PC restarts itself when playing CM?
A19. CM cannot restart the computer on its own (except in eXP where it will restart by default after a critical error). As a result, the problem is usually related to overheating and restarting is the computer’s way of telling you that it is getting too hot. The best fix is to get some more case fans. If you can’t do that, try taking the side off your computer to let some more air in. (WARNING: don’t let anything spill/fall into the open case!)

Q20. My save game no longer appears in the restore list?
A20. This means that the file header has become corrupt and your game is beyond repair. The most likely causes for this happening are bad sectors (run scandisk) or data updates.

Q21. My save game gives me an error when I try and load it and it won’t load?
A21. Similar to A16 - this means that the save game is more than likely corrupt and your game is beyond repair. Again, the most likely causes for this happening are bad sectors (run scandisk) or data updates.

Q23. Will CM4 work with Windows 95?
A23. Microsoft doesn’t support Windows 95 anymore, and neither does CM4! CM4 will work on Windows 98/se, Me, NT4 with
Service Pack 6a, 2000 and XP.

Q24. Is there a/Will there be a Linux/Unix/BeOS/ version of CM4?
A24. No there isn’t/will not be! CM4 is only on Windows and Mac, and there are no current plans to port to any other weird or wonderful platform. It should work fine with Wine/WineX although that is untested and (very) unsupported.

Q25. Does CM4 work with AMD K6 Processors?
A25. Yes it does, CM4 will work fine on AMD K6 series processors. We must point out that these processors will be below our minimum specs, and will run the game very slowly!

Q26. Can we continue the games we've played in the Demo on the full version of CM4?
A26. Yes!

Q27. How do I take a Screenshot?
A27. Press the print screen button on the keyboard (Prt Sc(r) - next to F12). The image is now stored on the clipboard and you can access it by pasting (Ctrl+V) into Paint or other image-editing software.

Q28. I’m getting an error that the wrong CD is in the drive. But CM4 is in the drive?
A28. You may want to check to ensure the CD is not damaged or dirty. Check the bottom (shiny) side of the CD for scratches, and use a soft cloth to wipe from the centre of the CD directly out to the edge to take care of any fingerprints or smudging.
Then, try installing the game again.

Q29. “During launch the game simply crashes back to the Windows desktop with no error message."

-- OR --

"After the game launches it locks up on a black screen."

A29. A large amount of the time this is to do with issues with the style of copy protection used on the Championship Manager 4.

The first thing to you should do is to ensure that you have the CM4 CD in the drive when you are attempting to launch the game, and that your CDROM drive recognizes that it is inserted.

If you are still having the problem after taking these steps, you may need to upgrade the firmware in your CD-ROM drive.
Please contact your equipment manufacturer if you need assistance with this.

If you believe that you are having trouble with your CD's SecuRom copy protection, please complete the following: http://www.ina-support.com/sony_troubleshooter/index.htm.

Q30. When I try and start CM4 I get a message that I don’t have enough memory to run the game?
A30. This will occur if the system does not have the required amount of RAM in order to run the game, or has limited memory due to an excessive amount of applications running in the background. If you get this error we would suggest closing all applications and rebooting the computer, and then starting CM4, and no other applications.

Q31. I'm having trouble installing the game on Windows NT?
A31. This is probably due to you not having installed service pack 3. Please check the Microsoft website and install this important upgrade to service pack 6a and try installing the game again. You may also check that the user account you are trying to install under has administrator rights to the machine.

Q32. Im running Windows 98 and my mouse pointer is not set at the tip of the finger?
A32. Make sure you have the CM4 Enhancement Pack installed. If you still get it, try moving from 32 bit color down to 16 bit.

Q33. I want to copy my save game/tactics to another computer, where can I find them?
A33. In the root of your CM4 directory (“C:\Program Files\CM4 for example”) you will see a directory called “User Data” Within that directory you will probably have 3 directories; firstly ‘games’ (which contains your save games), secondly ‘tactics’ (which contains your saved tactics) and filters! Don’t panic if you have more or fewer folders than this, it depends on what you have saved from within the game!

Q34. I play my games on PC/Mac and I want to play my game on my friends Mac/PC? Is there anything I can do?
A34. Yes indeed, as long as both games are on the same patch version of CM4 Mac and PC save games should work on each operating system. Put your save game in the Cm4\User Data\games directory and play away.

Q35. I want to design my own skin, can you help me?
A35. The best thing you can do is go to one of the CM fan based skinning sites such as www.cmskins.com and read one of their guides! Don’t forget the Skins forum on the sigames.com message board!

Q36. I've just installed the game but it doesn’t seem to be able to find the Exe?
A36. We suggest uninstalling and reinstalling the game, when you are presented with the Finish message wait 2 seconds before clicking the confirmation button. This should allow the final files enough time to be copied across to your system correctly.

Q37. Does CM4 work on this new beta version of windows "Windows Longhorn"?
A37. CM4 is untested and unsupported on anything but Windows 98se, NT4 Service Pack 6a, Me, 2000 and XP.

Q38. My game wont install and/or crashes and/or is not working as it should and I want/need help immediately!
A38. Contact Eidos technical support as described at the back your manual if you want help immediately!

Q39. My mouse pointer is not clicking at the point of the finger on the mouse pointer?
A39. This is very rare and only seems to happen on Windows 98. We are working on a proper solution, but as a work around set your screen color to 16 bit and not 24 or 32 bit.

Q40. Im running WinXP SP-1 and I find programs running slower after I install Windows XP Service Pack 1?
A40. From Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=815411

SYMPTOMS After you install Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1), your programs may take as much as ten times as long to start.

CAUSE
This problem may occur if the programs you run frequently allocate and deallocate large blocks of memory. Changes in Windows XP SP1 in the memory management system have caused this operation to take significantly longer than with pre-SP1 Windows XP.

RESOLUTION
A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows XP service pack that contains this fix.

Q41. How do I start a network game?
A41. Start CM4, Click the Game Settings button (or Game Options on the left hand side, and then Game Settings). At the bottom of this screen you have "Server Settings". Click the "Run as Server" box, and give your server the name of your choice. It’s a good idea to change it from the default!

Now click confirm. Now you should start a new game, or load your game. People should now be able to see and join your game!

Please be aware that both you as the server, and people joining as clients need the following ports open on any routers or firewalls in your way, 9091 (udp) and 9092 (9092 (tcp).

Q42. How do I join a network game?
A42. Open Cm4, click on the "Join Network Game" button! In there the game name you want should be listed on the list of games, if it is not click "Join Other" on the top right of the screen, and a box comes up, put in the IP address of the game in there!

Please be aware that you will need the following ports open on any routers or firewalls in your way, 9091 (udp) and 9092 (9092 (tcp).

Q43. I dont understand Database Size and Full Detail? Can you explain?
A43. Database Size
The games database is huge in comparison to CM01-02, CM4 has over 200,000 players in it - with the inclusion of staff etc. there are over 250,000 people in the game.

In comparison to this CM01-02 had around 120,000 people present in the game.

Because of this the size of database you select has a huge effect on game speed.

If you select maximum database size then this will retain the a lot of players when the game begins (exact amount varies dependant upon the leagues selected) and this will make the game much slower than on the lower database settings where fewer players will be retained.

If you have a machine which isn't 'top end' then I do NOT recommend using the maximum database setting.

Full Detail
The full detail setting changes the simulation model used by the match engine slightly which speeds up the processing of matches in 'non-full detail' leagues considerably.

The only noticable difference in such leagues is that you will not be able to watch 2D replays of the vast majority past games from such leagues.

PS. If your MAIN league (ie. the one you're managing in) is set to non-full detail then any competitions you are active within will remain as 'Full Detail' and only those you are not present in will be simulated using the lesser detail setting.

Using these options can speed the game up considerably, I recommend playing around with them if you are dissatisfied with the game speed.

How to install and use Enhancement Packs

Once you have downloaded the enhancement pack you want to use, obtained from www.sigames.com, installing it onto you computer so that you can use it is very simple. All you have to do is double click on the .exe file and it installs itself, it is a self extractor. The update will only apply on games started after the installation.

He then starts a new game, running the leagues of choice.

The other players need to sign in to the game, using the IP of the machine the game is started on. You can find it in the Game Status window, if you don't know it:

The game is joined through the 'Network Game' option in the main menu. You then choose 'Join Other Server' and fill in the wanted IP.

id like to thank ruud for this info........

to add players to your database no matter wot size you select, follow what i've put but add different nation or team depending on who you want........

for teams, put the text as i've put in the pic below, as it is in the notepad...... but this depends on the team....... (edit, by Ruud: "Also note that the name for the team has to be the short name listed in the database, the one that appears in fixture lists. So i.e. "Man Utd" for Manchester United or "Valencia" for Valencia S.A.D..")

for national, put the text i've put in the pic below as it is, in a notepad...... depending on the nation.............. (edit, by Ruud: This keeps all players with that nationality in the game, does not affect foreign players in the nation's league system. You need to use the full name of the country, as used on the title bar of the National squad; i.e.: "United States" for USA, and "China P.R." for China.)

save the notepad as team/nation.ddt (the ddt bit on the end is the most important part.... just type that in), just copy like in the pic below including putting the file type to 'all files'. The bit of the name before the dot is just for recognition. Name "as you like.ddt"

then put that file in C:\Program Files\Eidos\CM 03-04\data\db
like the pic below......
