How do World Cups work?

This has been a constant mystery to me. In a career I would like "my" team to qualify for the world cup. But if I don't have a chance to play the qualification then this seems to be pure luck.

Is there any way to increase my chances for luck? It seems like the world cup is configured somewhere in the file system (under dlc/data), but I still don't understand the logic behind all this and which files I need to look into.

CM14 does not seem to help. I don't understand the settings under "trophies" at all.

Also: once in a career mode, where are the seeded qualification groups stored?

it´s complicated,
there are qualifiers just for uefa and conmebol the rest of teams are choosen randomise
