So, I know I won't get much of a sample here since the FM forum is more modest in numbers, but at least I'll get honest opinions. I want to start a new FM save, this time with the following idea:

either pick up a first-tier club from a relatively low rated country, and bring that league to the top of the world by great European success (yes, just Europe)

or do the more classical LLM, picking up some lowlife club from the slums and bring it up to worldclass, bearing in mind I've done that in almost every FM, so this has the disadvantage because the DLR this year changs things.

I've laid out some options, please vote and tell me why! (Y)

Ajax, because of the history and to check out the DLR. Although be warned that from what I've read, DLR is hugely flawed.

SG United or Chelmsford City. (H)

I kid.

How about Anderlect there's Lukaku something to start with or Standard Liege with good youngsters in midfield.

as long as the dynamic league reputation thing actually works, I'm personally contemplating Belgium or Greece to try and develop ...

Belgium has a lot of world class talent coming through right now, so it could be fun to have a great home base to choose from immediately, and try to infuse the best of the rest as the reputation of the league develops ...

but I'm really leaning towards Greece ... why Greece? well, it is a holiday destination pretty much year round, which means that if the country had the proper levels of investment, they could have terrific infrastructure, a large local fanbase, AND be able to attract a huge international base to not only watch on TV, but visit the country to catch match or two while on a business/personal trip (which in itself would promote further investment as more people seek to cash in on what would be a popular cash cow) ... it would be a dream job as a manager if the best football league was in one of the best tourist destinations ... that's also a strong reason why I don't see the colder Eastern European nations as countries that could compete with places with better weather ...

overall, that makes trying to develop Greece the most appealing for me ... and I'd pick PAOK of Thessaloniki -- the city because it is in the region of Central Macedonia, where Alexander the Great and the Macedon empire ruled from; the club because black is an awesome colour! (H)

Yeah, well, the Scottish League is probably boring, but it'd give me the chance to constantly qualify for Europe with ease and concentrate on getting to the final knock-out stages of the UCL...

Ajax has always been one of my favourite clubs, and one just can't help trying to develop a beautiful-football tactic when playing with them...

A club like Shakhtar has the financial possibilities, along with the same issues of Scotland, while a clube from the Portuguese Segunda(3rd tier) would be fairly easy to get in the Liga ZON-Sagres...

Might that be because not only you but also other teams from your league have to perform well in Europe too? Or you need to perform well on a high European level for a longer period of time, like 5-10 years? Just some thoughts, I haven't gotten far enough in the game to find out how it works.

Oh and Fili, Ajax of course. (H)

I dunno, I don't have the game yet, but I've seen a lot of complaints so far.

that would raise the European coefficients up little by little over time, and that was already part of the game ... raising dynamic league reputation would have to be based on something more than just European coefficients, in order to attract the top players and retain the best local talent ... that's why I discussed my reasons for Greece in a little more detail ...

I don't think SI went as far as taking tourism numbers into account when designing the DLR feature.

And even if they did, Greece has a debt of a few billions and is almost bankrupt, so not much room for development of the Greece football league.

I kind of consider Shakhtar my club, so I'll say Celtic. I don't really want to see your screen shots from the Blue Square North to be totally honest and Ajax is too common.

And I'll throw this out: Is Red Bull Salzburg still rich this year? I had a really fun game with them either in 09 or 10 and they could be a good possibility. With all that money the domestic league is extremely easy and you can focus on Europe.

agreed on both counts ...

as I said:

in real life, it's not there -- which is why the status quo of European football is as it is, and why Germany's financial practices and regulations for football teams makes them the only legitimate contender to improve their real-life league reputation to elite standards in the coming 5-10 years ...

it would be good to know what exactly their criteria of design was for the DLR ...

if it is just European coefficients, then I would wipe the debts of all (or most of the) Greek clubs before starting the game ... can't see how else this could be done, because: one club cannot raise a whole league's reputation when the rest of the league is mired in debt; and a manager cannot go around the world looking for investments to wipe the debts of his team, let alone most or all of the league's teams ...

in addition, I'd either have to give all the clubs top training and youth facilities, or have low-scale underwriters who would at least provide initial stability so the league's best talents don't get poached as the reputation builds ...

I'm really tempted to pick up Ajax because of the style. I get what Shifty said, but do I really want to pick up a Celtic team and have them play Total Football? On the other hand, it'd be easier to do. Hmm.

Also, with Celtic, the youth coming up with be considerably less talented than in Holland.

I'll start a game probably wednesday, so you have until then to convince me. :D

The Dutch league is going to annoy you when you're conceding 2 goals per game and have the best defensive record in the the Eredivisie.
