Guatemalan goalkeeper dies after collision

GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — Goalkeeper Danny Ortiz died Sunday after colliding with an opposing player during a Guatemalan league soccer game.

Ortiz, 27, was knocked unconscious briefly when he took a hard shot to the chest during a collision with Comunicaciones forward Mario Rodriguez. He was taken to a hospital and was listed in stable condition, but the Municipal player later died.
"Unfortunately, his heart did not respond," team physician Dr. Jorge Jerez said at a joint news conference with hospital doctors.

Ortiz debuted in the first division in 1998, and also played for Comunicaciones.

"The club is going to take care of all the expenses," Municipal president Gerardo Villa said. "His wife is in a state of shock. For that reason, we are waiting for his parents."

It was the second tragedy to strike the Municipal club as another player, Johnny Aldana, died during a training session two years ago.

how are they going to prevent accidental collisions? if anything they'd better look at all these congenital heart defect deaths that's been cropping up aplenty.

RIP

They should invoke the testing that by law is done in Italy. Any pro sports athlete must get full heart testing. Its not usually done unless a doctor suspects something.

RIP Ortiz.
