I noticed there wasn't a thread about this already, so I decided to open one. Lyrics have always been important to me in music, and it is what usually makes me really like certain songs.

On that note, I'd like for you to post songs which have great lyrics, in your opinion, whether it's their humor, or their comedic value, the whole song, or just a phrase in it. Share your thoughts.

Here are some of my favorites:

Foo Fighters - Everlong Especially "And I wonder, when I sing along with you, if everything could ever be this good forever."
Dave Lindholm - Pieni ja hento ote He's a Finnish singer-songwriter, and as most of his songs, this is beautiful from the start to finish, but I especially like this part: "Pidän sinusta siinä kaikki, pitääkö se todistaa tuhansilla sanoilla?", which can be translated into "I like you, that's all. Do I have to prove it with a thousand words?"
U2 - Crumbs From Your Table Mostly the part in the bridge - "Where you live should not decide whether you live or whether you die."
U2 - Miracle Drug
U2 - Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own
Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah Quite possibly the most beautiful song ever written.
Simon and Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water There's just something so powerful about this.
Radiohead - Creep I guess I don't need to say anything about this.

Just to get it started. I left most of the obvious ones out of the list, but feel free to post them, of course. I'll probably post more later, too, as I come across some.

Ah difficult one this, there's so many. A couple that come to mind:

"You got me blowin, blowin my mind. Is it tomorrow or just the end of time?"(The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Purple Haze, Jimi Hendrix)
"The traffic lights, they'll turn up blue tomorrow. And shine there emptiness down on my bed."(The Jimi Hendrix Experience - The Wind Cries Mary, Jimi Hendrix)
"If I don't meet you no more in this world. I'll meet you on the next one and don't be late. Don't be late!"(The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Voodoo Child(Slight Return), Jimi Hendrix)
"There was a young girl, who's heart was a frown cause she was crippled for life, and she couldnt speak a sound. And she wished and prayed she could stop living, so she decided to die. She drew her wheelchair to the edge of the shore and to her legs she smiled you wont hurt me no more but then a sight she'd never seen made her jump and say: 'look a golden winged ship is passing my way'. And it really didnt have to stop, it just kept on going...
And so castles made of sand slips into the sea, eventually" (The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Castles Made of Sand, Jimi Hendrix)
"Cause if my baby don't love me no more...I know her sister will." (The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Red House, Jimi Hendrix)
"All I know is that I don't know. All I know is that I don't know nothing. And that's fine." (Operation Ivy - Knowledge, Jesse Michaels)
"Sometimes I sit at home and wonder if she's sitting at home thinking of me and wondering if I'm sitting at home thinking about here. Or am I just wasting my time?" (blink-182 - Wasting Time, Mark Hoppus)
"From the very first time I blessed my eyes with you, girl. My heart says follow t'rough." (Bob Marley & The Wailers - Waiting in Vain, Bob Marley)
"If you have to ask, you'll never know" (Red Hot Chili Peppers - If You Have To Ask, Anthony Kiedis)
"I don't know what hurts more. Seeing them leave or watching them go." (Dr. Dre - The Message, Andre "Dr. Dre" Young)
"I'm going to attempt to drown myself. You can do this at home. You can be just like me." (Eminem - Role Model, Marshall "Eminem" Mathers)

Then there's a couple of songs I like the entire lyrics of, like some Operation Ivy, Jimi Hendrix and RHCP songs I can't be bothered to remember right now. :p

Might think of a few more later...

The Shins - Pink Bullets has some really nice lyrics:

I was just bony hands as cold as a winter pole
You held a warm stone out new flowing blood to hold
Oh what a contrast you were
To the brutes in the halls
My timid young fingers held a decent animal.

Over the ramparts you tossed
The scent of your skin and some foreign flowers
Tied to a brick
Sweet as a song
The years have been short but the days were long.

Cool of a temperate breeze from dark skies to wet grass
We fell in a field it seems now a thousand summers passed
When our kite lines first crossed
We tied them into knots
And to finally fly apart
We had to cut them off.

Since then it's been a book you read in reverse
So you understand less as the pages turn
Or a movie so crass
And awkardly cast
That even I could be the star.

I don't look back as much as a rule
And all this way before murder was cool
But your memory is here and I'd like it to stay
Warm light on a winter day.

Over the ramparts you tossed
The scent of your skin and some foreign flowers
Tied to a brick
Sweet as a song
The years have been short but the days go slowly by
Two loose kites falling from the sky
Drawn to the ground and an end to flight.

Kings of Leon-Sex on Fire
Jamiroquai-Hot Tequila Brown
It's been so long
And the groove in my heart is nearly gone
Oh, my head's in the clouds
But I'm landing on my feet
Kanye West-The Glory
but with my ego ,i can stand there in a speedo
and be looked at like a f-ckin hero
And Michael Carlos*son's Beat It has some pretty decent lyrics too.

I found a whole new meaning to those Everlong lyrics once when watching a video of FF playing it live on YouTube. Before they begin, Grohl says "This one is for you-know-who." With a blue guitar hanged around his neck. "And I wonder when I sing along with you, if everything could ever be this good forever." Makes you wonder...

Thought I'd complete my list a bit:

Foo Fighters - Home "People I've loved, I have no regrets. Some I remember, some I forget. Some of them living, some of them dead. All I want is to be home."
Foo Fighters - Statues "We're just ordinary people, you and me. Time will turn us into statues eventually." You can't put it any better than that.
Stone Sour - Bother
Wish I was too dead to cry
My self-affliction fades
Stones to throw at my creator
Masochists to which I cater
You don't need to bother;
I don't need to be
I'll keep slipping farther
But once I hold on,
I won't let go 'til it bleeds

Wish I was too dead to care
If indeed I cared at all
Never had a voice to protest
So you fed me **** to digest
I wish I had a reason;
my flaws are open season
For this, I gave up trying
One good turn deserves my dying

You don't need to bother;
I don't need to be
I'll keep slipping farther
But once I hold on,
I won't let go 'til it bleeds

[Solo: Corey]

Wish I'd died instead of lived
A zombie hides my face
Shell forgotten
with its memories
Diaries left
with cryptic entries

And you don't need to bother;
I don't need to be
I'll keep slipping farther
But once I hold on,
I won't let go 'til it bleeds

You don't need to bother;
I don't need to be
I'll keep slipping farther
But once I hold on:
I'll never live down my deceit

Like that line of lyrics as well, as for U2's "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own" which you posted earlier, like the line that goes "A house doesn't make a home".

Parabol / Parabola

So familiar and overwhelmingly warm
This one, this form I hold now.
Embracing you, this reality here,
This one, this form I hold now, so
Wide eyed and hopeful.
Wide eyed and hopefully wild.

We barely remember what came before this precious moment,
Choosing to be here right now. Hold on, stay inside...
This body holding me, reminding me that I am not alone in
This body makes me feel eternal. All this pain is an illusion.

We barely remember who or what came before this precious moment,
We are choosing to be here right now. Hold on, stay inside
This holy reality, this holy experience.
Choosing to be here in

This body. This body holding me. Be my reminder here that I am not alone in
This body, this body holding me, feeling eternal
All this pain is an illusion.

Alive, I

In this holy reality, in this holy experience. Choosing to be here in

This body. This body holding me. Be my reminder here that I am not alone in
This body, this body holding me, feeling eternal
All this pain is an illusion.

Twirling round with this familiar parable.
Spinning, weaving round each new experience.
Recognize this as a holy gift and celebrate this chance to be alive and breathing.

This body holding me reminds me of my own mortality.
Embrace this moment. Remember. We are eternal.
All this pain is an illusion.

Lateralus

Black then white are all I see in my infancy.
red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me.
lets me see.
As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
drawn beyond the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. Watch it bend.

Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind.
Withering my intuition, missing opportunities and I must
Feed my will to feel my moment drawing way outside the lines.

Black then white are all I see in my infancy.
red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me.
lets me see there is so much more
and beckons me to look through to these infinite possibilities.
As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
drawn outside the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. Watch it bend.

Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind.
Withering my intuition leaving all these opportunities behind.

Feed my will to feel this moment urging me to cross the line.
Reaching out to embrace the random.
Reaching out to embrace whatever may come.

I embrace my desire to
feel the rhythm, to feel connected
enough to step aside and weep like a widow
to feel inspired, to fathom the power,
to witness the beauty, to bathe in the fountain,
to swing on the spiral
of our divinity and still be a human.

With my feet upon the ground I lose myself
between the sounds and open wide to suck it in,
I feel it move across my skin.
I'm reaching up and reaching out,
I'm reaching for the random or what ever will bewilder me.
And following our will and wind we may just go where no one's been.
We'll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one's been.

Spiral out. Keep going, going...

Reflection

I have come curiously close to the end, down
Beneath my self-indulgent pitiful hole,
Defeated, I concede and
Move closer
I may find comfort here
I may find peace within the emptiness
How pitiful

It's calling me...

And in my darkest moment, fetal and weeping
The moon tells me a secret - my confidant
As full and bright as I am
This light is not my own and
A million light reflections pass over me

Its source is bright and endless
She resuscitates the hopeless
Without her, we are lifeless satellites drifting

And as I pull my head out I am without one doubt
Don't wanna be down here feeding my narcissism.
I must crucify the ego before it's far too late
I pray the light lifts me out
Before I pine away.

So crucify the ego, before it's far too late
To leave behind this place so negative and blind and cynical,
And you will come to find that we are all one mind
Capable of all that's imagined and all conceivable.
Just let the light touch you
And let the words spill through
And let them pass right through
Bringing out our hope and reason ...
before we pine away.

Vicarious

Eye on the TV
'cause tragedy thrills me
Whatever flavor it happens to be

Like:
"Killed by the husband" ...
"Drowned by the ocean" ...
"Shot by his own son" ...
"She used a poison in his tea,
Then (she) kissed him goodbye"
That's my kind of story
It's no fun til someone dies.

Don't look me at like I am a monster
Frown out your one face, but with the other (you)
Stare like a junkie into the TV
Stare like a zombie while the mother holds her child,
Watches him die,
Hands to the sky cryin "why, oh why?"

Cause I need to watch things die from a distance
Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies
You all need it too - don't lie.

Why can't we just admit it?
Why can't we just admit it?
We won't give pause until the blood is flowin'
Neither the brave nor bold
Nor brightest of stories told
We won't give pause until the blood is flowin'

I need to watch things die from a good safe distance
Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies
You all feel the same so why can't we just admit it?

Blood like rain fallin' down
Drum on grave and ground

Part vampire, part warrior,
Carnivore and voyeur
Stare at the transmittal.
Sing to the death rattle.

La, la, la, la, la, la, la-lie (x4)

Credulous at best
Your desire to believe in
Angels in the hearts of men.
But pull your head on out (of) your hippie haze
And give a listen
Shouldn't have to say it all again

The universe is hostile
So impersonal
Devour to survive
So it is, so it's always been ...

We all feed on tragedy.
It's like blood to a vampire.

Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies
Much better you than I.

And much, much more...

Great pick. It was one of the ones that immediately came to mind for me. Another personal favorite:

The Decemberists - Los Angeles, I'm Yours (a bit pretentious, like all Decemberist songs, but still brilliant):

There is a city by the sea
A gentle company
I don’t suppose you want to
And as it tells its sorry tale
In harrowing detail
Its hollowness will haunt you
Its streets and boulevards
Orphans and oligarchs it hears
A plaintive melody
Truncated symphony
An ocean’s garbled vomit on the shore,
Los Angeles, I’m yours

Oh ladies, pleasant and demure
Sallow-cheeked and sure
I can see your undies
And all the boys you drag about
An empty fallow fount
From Saturdays to Mondays
You hill and valley crowd
Hanging your trousers down at heel
This is the realest thing
As ancient choirs sing
A dozen blushing cherubs wheel above
Los Angeles my love

Oh what a rush of ripe élan
Languor on divans
Dalliant and dainty
But oh, the smell of burnt cocaine
The dolor and decay
It only makes me cranky
Oh great calamity,
Ditch of iniquity and tears
How I abhor this place
Its sweet and bitter taste
Has left me wretched, retching on all fours
Los Angeles, I’m yours

One of my favourites is Muse - Hoodoo. Anyone?

Probably my Muse favourite, not only because of the lyrics but also because of the intention he puts in the lyrics with the particular different voice, beautiful piece.

Deftones - Simple Man [Lynyrd Skynyrd cover]

Mama told me when I was young
Come sit beside me, my only son
And listen closely to what I say.
And if you do this
It will help you some sunny day.
Take your time... don’t live too fast,
Troubles will come and they will pass.
Go find a woman and you’ll find love,
And don’t forget son,
There is someone up above.

And be a simple kind of man.
Be something you love and understand.
Be a simple kind of man.
Won’t you do this for me son,
If you can?

Forget your lust for the rich man’s gold
All that you need is in your soul,
And you can do this if you try.
All that I want for you my son,
Is to be satisfied.

And be a simple kind of man.
Be something you love and understand.
Be a simple kind of man.
Won’t you do this for me son,
If you can?

Boy, don’t you worry... you’ll find yourself.
Follow you heart and nothing else.
And you can do this if you try.
All I want for you my son,
Is to be satisfied.

And be a simple kind of man.
Be something you love and understand.
Be a simple kind of man.
Won’t you do this for me son,
If you can?

You'll Never Walk Alone - R. Rogers/O. Hammerstein II

When you walk through a storm
Hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark

At the end of the storm
Is a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of the lark

Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown

Walk on walk on with hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone

When you walk through a storm
Hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark

At the end of the storm
Is a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of the lark

Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown

Walk on walk on with hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone

Walk on walk on with hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone.

Through the storms and the light
baby, you stood by my side
and life is wine
but there are days in this life
when you see the teeth marks of time
two lovers divide

sound meets sound, babe
the echoes, they surround
and know that we need is one thing
now what is there to allow?
babe, it's time we give something new a try
oh, alone we may fight
so, just let us be free

and baby tonight
I see your lips are on fire
and life is wine
now the windows are open, the moon is so bright
'cause no one can tell us what love brings, you and I

sound meets sound, babe
the echoes, they surround
and know that we need is one thing
now what is there to allow
babe, it's time we give something new a try
oh, alone we may fight
so just let us be free, tonight

Through the storms and the light
baby you stood by my side
and life is wine
you feel the sweet breath of time
it's whispering, it's truth, not mine
there's no I in threesome

and I am all for it
babe, it's time we give something new a try
oh, alone we may fight
and feathers bend like trees in the moonlight
babe, it's time we give something new a try
oh, alone we may fight
so just let us be free tonight

Wrap me in a bolt of lightning
Send me on my way still smiling
Maybe that's the way I should go,
Straight into the mouth of the unknown
I left the spare key on the table
Never really thought I'd be able to say
I merely visit on the weekends
I lost my whole life and a dear friend

I've said it so many times
I would change my ways
No, nevermind
God knows I've tried

[Chorus]
Call me a sinner, call me a saint
Tell me it's over I'll still love you the same
Call me your favorite, call me the worst
Tell me it's over I don't wan't you to hurt
It's all that I can say. So, I'll be on my way

I finally put it all together,
But nothing really lasts forever
I had to make a choice that was not mine,
I had to say goodbye for the last time
I kept my whole life in suitcase,
Never really stayed in one place
Maybe that's the way it should be,
You know I've led my life like a gypsy

I've said it so many times
I would change my ways
No, nevermind
God knows I've tried

[Chorus]
Call me a sinner, call me a saint
Tell me it's over I'll still love you the same
Call me your favorite, call me the worst
Tell me it's over I don't wan't you to hurt
It's all that I can say. So, I'll be on my way

I'll always keep you inside, you healed my
Heart and my life... And you know I try.

[Chorus]
Call me a sinner, call me a saint
Tell me it's over I'll still love you the same
Call me your favorite, call me the worst
Tell me it's over I don't wan't you to hurt
It's all that I can say. So, I'll be on my way
So, I'll be on my way
So, I'll be on my way
