Great ideas for UEFA Challenge! (freekicks and penalty)

FREEKICK:
When taking a free kick, the camera should be lower and positioned in a way such that we are looking at what the player is looking. For example, if the player is looking near the left upright, the camera will position itself and the left upright will be at the center of the screen. (Just like Tomb Raider) There should not have any arrow but instead a shooting bar just like in the game. Where the free kick taker will shoot determined on the direction of the keypad. For example, if I could look at the right of the goal post but I press top-left at the directional pad, the ball will curl to the top left corner IF the shooting power is just nice. Without pressing the D-pad, the player will shoot at the right. Whether the player will get the ball on target depends much on the shooting power. With the above, it would be difficult for the goalkeeper to save the ball if the free kick is near the edge of the penalty box. However, if the free kick is taken in quite a distance, the goalkeeper could easily save the ball as he saw where the ball is going. (This would be great in 2-player mode.) Please let the players control the goalkeeper (move left or right of the goal post) when the opponent takes a free kick.

PENALTY:
It should be like a free kick and should have a power bar and moving camera. (Tomb Raider :) ) The player can face the right, but kick to the left or middle of the goal post! However, the height of the ball is determined by the amount of power in the shooting meter. If the power bar is 1/10 – 3/10, immediately, the goalkeeper know the ball would be to the lower left, lower right or center. If the power bar is 4/10 – 6/10, the goalkeeper would know it is either the middle left, middle right, or center. If the power bar is 7/10 – 9/10, the goalkeeper would know that it is either the top left, top right or center. If it is 10/10, the ball will go wide.

DRIBBLING:
The players should not be able to make contact with another player. Means the player would be unable to tackle the ball from behind, but has to get to the side, and then make tackles. This makes dribbling more fun as I could dribble away from the opponents and not need to use fakes.(which isn't used often in real life.)

However I want to know if anyone like the ideas here. Please post if you agree with my suggestions.

Regarding Free kicks -

You can switch the arrow off while taking a free kick.

You can run players around to position them to receive the ball from a free kick.

You can do a step over free kick where one player steps over the ball and the other one takes it.

You can do a back heel free kick where the player back heels it into the path of the other player who will then strike the ball.

Penalties and Dribbling.

It's quite difficult to do anything really innovative with penalties. Take a look at ISS Pro Evo 2 on the PSX - nothing special. I think it's done this way for a reason - it works!

Dribbling - probably the most difficult thing to do well in a soccer game. It either becomes too easy (FIFA) or too difficult (ISS). I like some of the ideas though.

Ideally you need to strike a balance between fluid passing and intricate dribbling - not easy on one iteration of the game!! It can only get better!

Thanks for replying Jon.
Freekick: But the camera angle is not too good, I couldn't really see where the arrow is pointing. I think it's because the camera is too high above the player. By the way, how do I curl the ball? Does moving the D-pad after shooing works?

I thought a power meter for penalties would make UEFA challenge more unique and not like fifa and iss.

For both free kicks and penalties, don't you think it's cool to trick other players by making the takers face other directions? Also please let the gk control by players duing freekicks.

I agree. I noticed that most japanese football games only let the playes move in 8 directions and other let the players move in all directions(is that call analog). I think that is the reason why it is easier to dribble in fifa and harder in iss.

Another thing i want you guys to badly fix is the sideline camera view. It seems to be fixed at a position and when it is near the corner, I have to run diagonally so the player runs straight. Do you think you can change that such that I just have to run straight, or make another camera option like chasing sidelines camera view.

Thanks for replying and being patient to read all these and please pardon my bad english.

You can get a different camera angle while taking free kicks (can't quite remember off hand how this is triggered) but I see your point about the default one.

Having goalkeepers controlled by the player from free kicks is an interesting idea - we'll look into it.

As for the default sideline camera, I see your point and I would like to do a great deal more work on the default ones in future. Ideally a scripted dynamic camera would be nice as you can tailor this to your own requirements.

Thanks for your comments, we're already looking into these areas in more detail.
