Italy 1990: 12 games - 27 goals - 2.25

Blame it on whatever you want but this surely is bad news so far

Good post. I was wondering about that. Maybe it's the elevation or the vuvuzelas, fatigue or just a plain ****ty World Cup, but there aren't goals being scored so far.

Well since 1990 was the worst world cup i have seen, this one is right on par really. althought today's game were much more decent....

I dont know what it is is like players are passing up clear goal scoring oportunities, the ball flies high; the vuvuzelas affect communication....etc....its definetly a combination of things

1990 World Cup was awful; no goals, and all the late matches were won 1-0 on penalties.

I think part of the reason is the vuvuzelas, and I think the other half is the rise of defensive football. Between the emergence of the 4-2-3-1 and even some experimentation with 4-6-0 (not at the international level, but it was still successful in a very good league), managers realize now more than ever that keeping a clean sheet is priority #1.

I hope things get better in the second round of the group stage. We're only day 6. We have seen only 1/4 of the games so far. Hopefully the quarters/semis and final will be exciting.

I was looking at this the other day, pretty fascinating really, just can't see any proper explanation behind it though other than teams are just being far too defensive and and really trying to keep their clean sheet in tact.

Maybe it should be time to switch a couple of rules around, point for two goals maybe? Might make teams a bit more determined to score.

The World Cup has been pretty damn good after the first round. Hope it keeps getting better.

Nobody wants to loose the first round... so I don't know why anyone would have expected there to be so many goals in the first round. Not to mention the fact that players are on that high of actually being in the world cup.

We didnt expect a goal-glut in the first patch of games. What we did expect tho was to see some half-enjoyable matches, and it was a big let down. Now we're getting to see some very good games, and if it weren't for the vuvuzelas, this WC would've been near greatness. Unfortunately that damn plastic horn makes all matches feel lifeless, since you dont get to hear the fans at all.
