Wow. I thought this topic was ended because of the tirades, mocho-attitudes and whinings that PES fans would throw in FIFA fans faces that would just wreck the whole purpose. This was more like another PES thread.

Updated Comparison

Just received my brand new Official Playstation Magazine here in the USA yesterday. The monthly demo disc had both FIFA06 and WE9:I (the North American version of PES5). This is the 1st year I haven't touched FIFA since 1996 and so my 1st experience with FIFA06 was last nght. The demo disc allowed a full half of play in either game. I played about 10 "halves" of each and here are my thoughts:

Graphics:
Year in, year out, EA has arguably owned this dept. This year, however, I have to truly check the sanity of anyone who would argue that WE/PES doesn't totally destroy FIFA in this area. I mean, it's not even freaking close! If I showed you one then the other, you would swear they weren't running on the same system.

Presentation:
EA once again do a better job, but not by that wide a margin. The WE9 demo I played, did not have crowd noises, so I can't compare the atmosphere, although if past iterations of FIFA vs PES are any measure, I have a hard time believing WE/PES will surpass them this year.

Gameplay:
EA was improved, but once again, it just doesn't "feel" right. Once again, I feel that if I bought this game, set it to the World Class and just "memorized" the AI patterns, I would be scoring 4-6 goals every game in no time. By the 5th game I played with FIFA I was scoring 2 goals every time. On the other hand, after the 10 match with WE, I had only scored 1 goal total.

Team Mgt:
I know FIFA has these mapped to the direction buttons, but it feels pretty darn arcadey to me. As an example of the superiority of WE in this area, I was playing as Chelsea vs Real Madrid. I had Damian Duff on the left MF playing very offensively. About 1 minute into the game, Real started exloiting the right side vacated by an attacking Duff. I went to the menu/individual screen, clicked on Duff and changed his "attacking" arrows to have him track back and also tweaked his position to move him further back. This immediately negated Real's runs down the right to Beckham and the flow of the game immediately changed. I didn't change the team formation, I didn't change anything else about my team, except to plug a negative hole that real was exploiting. I can picture Jose Mourinho watching that game unfold and yelling to Duff, "forget about the pre-game tactics, I want you to track back now and also park yourself a little further back". These unbelievably subtle, yet powerful tactucal nuances are really what make WE/PES a soccer fan's soccer game.

Just look at the 10 pages of this thread. The only pros that FIFA guys can give are: "PES has as much atmosphere as table soccer", "I prefer to play with real players and editing PES takes too much time" and others. You never hear anyone say anything about FIFA's superior gameplay. It's always the glitz with FIFA, not the substance. To each their own, but at least asdmit it!

My short comparison.

FIFA06 VS PES5
My opinion...
Fifa 7/10:
Positive:
Great game presentation
Easy-to-handle controls
Amazing sound (commentry,chants,menu music)
Simple and good looking menu's
Great career mode
Nice extras (retro,league videos...)
Great freestyle controls and tricks
Negative
Gameplay is too easy when you learn the game.
Shoot and pass too accurate too easily.
Weird player physics (sliding tackle combos, shooting-to-tackle combos in uber Speed etc..)
Some faces are just plain wierd and you can't edit them (ibrahimovic?)

PES5
7/10
Positive
Amazing realistic gameplay
Good Fans graphics and intro's.
You can edit and change player's apperance
And that's about it for me on the positive side.
Negative
Throw-ins are horrible
Menu's are annoying and too arcady and japanese (kill the dude who yells in the beginning of the game)
Master league is lame and unreal (2 french teams are in my italian seria a)
Graphics are not great even in hightst resolutions.
players body looks somewhat square
Sooo many fouls whisteled be the annoying referee (i didn't touch him!)
Controls are horrible (i use a keyboard and i need three hands to cover all of them)
All the dribbles and tricks are too robotic and there aren't that many anyway tricks anyway...
Commentry is just horrific.

In conclusion: the perfect football game would be combination of both games (well just the gameplay and physics of pes and everything else from fifa.... :$ )

Buy the ML composition option from the PES Shop.
The graphics aren't really an issue. The players are well animated and the models are polished.

Bad commentary? Turn it off.
It's not keyboard friendly. It's designed for a console, after all.
Plenty of fouls but it varies on which referee you get. Also how well you can time tackles.

Arcadey menus? Konami learned their trade in the arcades.

for me it's just too many annoying compromises... i play pes because it's more challanging then fifa.. that's the only reason. i prefer fifa's game esthetics and subtleties but it gets too easy after 2 months or so.

Weirdly, I prefered the PES5 demo to the full game. It seemed to me that the changes to the player's animations were dumbed down. You had more subtely to the movements of the players, but in the full game, I don't notice it as much. And the PES5 demo was harder than a really hard thing wrapped in something harder.

FIFA tries, but it doesn't try enough. It's trying to cope with the wider audience (kids, not football enthusiasts) and thusly, it gives you a simpler experience that tacticians find too easy.

Fifa is good for young players who dont care about gameplay...
Fifa06 is good for relax and if you are not to pretentious...

But for hardcore soccer fan fifa06 is total crap(long passing, ice feeling ball, shooting, player movement) and cant compare to we9...

hmmm thats why my friend who supports man u but can't name their first team players can win easily on 6 star :boohoo:

I feel pes is going down the pan pes3 was the last good pes game :kader:

PES3 irritated the hell out of me. Far too many random handballs. I really prefer PES5, even if the set peices are slightly knacked.

In fairness, I can't remember much about PES3. 'cept the handballs and Kezman having a two-year scoring drought.

Fifa06 was actually entertaining for a time and then it seemed like every game was the same. The CPU doesn't attack enough and when it does actually attack it's almost always on the wings. Even with gameplay patches the CPU is unimaginitive. I really like having all the leagues though and the management side of things is better than ML.

Don't have PES5 yet (will get WE9:I) but really enjoyed the last installments in the series. Player rankings actually mean something!

Well I am a new member so I reply now to this old thread :P !

I won't review Pro Evolution Soccer or say something about Fifa..........

I will just say:

My first post too. I have been waiting months for my account to be activated.

Anyway, Pes is better. (Maybe you have to play football to understand why)

However, there is something about fifa that creates better atmosphere and excitment when playing the game. :)
