FIFA World Cup 2018

This year is pretty significant in football since it is THE World Cup year. EA released dedicated World Cup titles from 1998 and it became almost a tradition. Yet it is almost april and there hasn't been any announcements made so far. Isn't it weird?

World Cup 2010 was announced in January and released in late April (27th to be exact).
World Cup 2014 was confirmed in October 2013 (interview with Andrew Wilson of Electronic Arts), officialy announced in February 3rd and released in April 15th.

And this year as of 29th March - nothing.

What do you think, are there any chances for separate title or are we pretty much doomed to DLC or even worse, FUT-only expansion?

It isn't actually something EA hasn't done before: in 2012 EA released DLC for European Championships, and in 2014 on next-gen and PC World Cup was introduced only in FUT.

Did previous World Cup installments flop in terms of sales and revenues and EA is hesitant to take risk of losing money or what? Or are they making so much money from FUT that they simply don't care? Is it possible that in 2014 they made more money from WC-themed FUT packs than from PS3/X360 games combined?

I thought it had been confirmed already. It's going to be a paid DLC, isn't it?.

They didn't confirm anything. But there isn't much hope left.

Getting half assed DLC will suck. They should just release a dedicated World Cup game, that will make them more money.

2006 and 2010 world cup were great. 2014 did suck and they screwed it up by not releasing a world cup game on next gen console.

I would really love a world cup game, especially on PC. Since 2006 WC was the last one on PC and that was an old gen garbage port.

It has been confirmed via a PSN leak that this year's World Cup game will actually be a DLC for FIFA 18!

The details are yet to be known but by the looks of it it could be a free DLC... I doubt it, at least if we are having +200 teams, all stadiums and qualifying but I could be wrong. Might as well be only free for the FUT part like it was in 2014.

This might be good news for PC players, like myself, since a DLC would probably mean the PC version would get it too!

If we don't get all 200 national teams, all world cup stadiums, fully playable in world cup mode+ kick off mode, then it's useless. If its another FUT only garbage, then EA can go fuck themselves.

I'm not expecting anything good from EA anyway, but it'd be great if this DLC is actually polished.

This thing on the left looks suspiciously similar to a FUT card :/

I really doubt that a DLC with all national teams, stadiums and other stuff will be released for free. EA aren't that stupid. I'm expecting to be dissapointed.

Well, we'll have the 32 NTs and the 12 stadiums to play offline as the official tournament, a custom tournament with the other NTs from FIFA 18 (no new ones), kick off or online in FUT. Guess an online mode outside FUT could be done, it's my turn down for this DLC.

What a dissapointment. Of course it is FUT based, even in the trailer video they still put more emphasis on a pack opening animation rather than the gamplay itself. The DLC being "free" is obviously a joke as well since they are changing price back to what it was in september-december.

The stadiums look great though - https://www.easports.com/fifa/news/2018/fifa-18-world-cup-stadiums Interesingly, in those screens it looks like they changed the adboards layout (similar to PES) but on the trailer video in the gameplay snippets the adboards tiles are still super narrow.

Very nice to see all 12 stadiums coming in a free DLC. Back in 2014 the PC users only got the Maracana and only for FUT.
As far as I understand, the only online WC experience will still be only in FUT though? :/

Those screenshots are total bullshot by the way.

There's no aliasing on depth of field. And the lighting probably wont be that good. But I hope they make night lighting brighter.

It's also cute how they only show their teams full of starheads (which is understandable for EA) and not Russia the hosts with zero to one starheads (depends if Zhirkov is playing), Iceland, Egypt, Morocco, Sweden, Iran, Australia, Denmark etc etc are basically all generics, even Uruguay, Argentina or Portugal with no more than 5 real faces per team.

There might be hope since these are new scans for Mexico

And the FIFA Mobile version has got some new faces recently.

It seems that there will still be faces, maybe even Golovin's face will)

Well at least 5 faces per team should be a must. I'd say Dzagoev, Golovin, Akinfeev, Smolov, Glushakov/Samedov as a bare minimum.

What worries me is that is says it's coming to PC, Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo without mensioning PS3/Xbox 360 versions which means it will be very hard to strip the DLC and add official WC2018 content to FIFA 14-16.
