FIFA 09 Event Munich @ F4F

Today there was an exclusive FIFA 09 Event in Munich where EA officials presented the new features of the upcoming FIFA 09 game and gave some time to play the game.

DaKaTotal from FIFA4Fans had the chance to be the first one in FIFA community to play the new game. After some first impressions of the game, F4F uploaded first pictures of the event today. You'll find these on www.fifa09.de

After playing it the first time F4F Admin DaKaTotal describes the game as a "milestone" in FIFA-history. He also spoke about his first impressions of the new game...
# FIFA 09 will Next-Generation Graphics on the PC, the graphic has been improved a lot
# The gameplay have been developped again, and is a great leap forward. The game plays similar to the NextGen version now.
# A new controll possibility by using the keyboard-mouse-combination has been added - and it works very well
# The Online Mode has been redesigned

For the pictures I have to say, that they don't show much, but you'll see how the new menu is going to look like (a lot like the next-gen ones), some GUI such as logos and minikits and also the ingame popups.

But that's not all, there's still much to come in the next hours/days, such as more informative Previews for the PC, the PS3 and the Wii version of the game, some new screens and an interview.

So stay tuned for updates...

Did you see enlarged screens from the game? The monitors are black on enlarged... :( You dont see much. And where did you see these infos for the PC? :)

I honestly doubt that the PC game will have graphics anything near the next-gen version, the list is only the personal view of DaKaTotal.

The details of menu and GUI are hard to see, but look closely and you will see the changes even if the screens are darkened.

Read the news and you read that these are pictures from the event and not from the game. Game pictures follow in the next day stand there

Sorry, I see them completely BLACK. I don't see anything from game. Hope they reveal them soon.

Uhh, now I know what you're meaning.
I can't see anything now too, because they updated them and made them completely black. Before the did this you could spot a lot of details.

FIFA 09 Event in Munich
The PC-Version
written by
Daniel Kaltenthaler, FIFA 4 Fans.com

For years there haven't been too many changes on the PC version, the graphic engine is old and ugly in FIFA 08 and even the gameplay was not as excited as lot of people wished. But with FIFA 09 there apears a new kind of FIFA: We have played the game, and it looks much better, you can play it much better and it feels better - it is better!

Designed for the PC
In recent years there have been used the Playstation 2 version for the PC version. This comes to an end now. The PC version is designed for the PC, it is not a converted version of a console. Thus, the game is now independent, and no longer dependent on certain characteristics of consoles.

Polished, deep gameplay
The changes in gameplay is clearly evident. In the range of collisions (especially in the air) have been worked a lot: A completely rewritten logic with 350 new animations ensures that collisions of two players are very realistic and understandable. If two players jump simultaneously to the header, it now makes a difference whether you have a heavy boulders or a flyweight as opponents. Height and the weight of the players and of course the right timing to decide about who is the winner of a two-fight.

In practice, the game is now very smooth. Passes go quickly to the next player, the player animations are elegant, and not bumpy anymore. The ball jumps more realistic now, and it bounce from players comprehensible. Well: It's really fun to play FIFA with this gameplay.

Comparing the gameplay with the NextGen version, so there is no big difference anymore. In my own opinion, there are still some points which could be improved to get perfect, but on the other hand there have been some guys on the event who said that they prefer the gameplay of the PC version instead of the one of the NextGen version. Which one is really better is probably a matter of taste. The fact is, however, that the biggest change in the gameplay since 4 years pays off.

Redesigned menu
A renewal can be found in menu design. Here are not only the already known menu items, but also various widgets. If there is available an Internet connection there widgets include some information about your own status, your own team, the community up to news of your own favorite teams from the real soccer world.

The menu itself is now also optimized for higher resolutions, even in HD monitors the menu now looks nicer..

New controll by using keyboard and mouse
If you do not have a gamepad, you previously had always to play by using the keyboard. This was unfortunately always a little wrinkled and inaccurate, gamepad users have always had an advantage. EA Sports now has built in a new control system where you use a keyboard-mouse combination.

The principle is basically very simple: The player can be moved with the keys W, A, S, D. If you want to use these keys because you think it is too complicated, you can optionally activate the "follow the mouse" mode. Then the player is automatically following the cursor whereever you move it. With the space bar you can run faster, by using the Alt key the speed of the player is reduced.

By using the cursor you can decide where the pass will go. Left click is a pass to the selected target, if you hold the left button, there will be a cross into this direction. Right click stands for a shot. Tricks are also on the middle mouse button. If you hold this key and move the mouse in a certain direction, the trick will be done.

This sounds strange one the one hand and complicated one the other hand - but it is not. If you practice this controll a bit, and you get used to it, you have a very precise control about the game.

Of course, you still can use a gamepads or use only the keyboard without a mouse - these possibilities are still available.

Next Generation Graphic
The fact which everyone had been waiting is now finally finally: FIFA 09 contains the NextGen graphics and makes a big step towards console version.

The player models are now as pretty as the ones out of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox360 version, so that even the muscles of the players can be identified. 3D grass grows from the ground, pretty shader and glowing effects have been added. The players look totally realistic, have a natural skin colour. It is possible to recognize Michael Ballack not only because of his face, but also because of his deceptively similar 3D hair.

However there are still missing some things. The stadiums are not yet adapted to NextGen, the spectators and the surrounding area in the stadiums have not been renewed yet. The NextGen changes have been primarily done in the area of the playing field which you can see all the time during the game. Nevertheless, the overall picture of the graphic is very positive.

EA has made a big step. The main focus has been on the NextGen graphic on the field in FIFA 09. EA will continue working on the graphics, so that - perhaps next year - there will even more Next Generation graphics available

Fully constomized PC controll

Also a new feature is the possibility that the whole controll is fully configurable - which also means that the defence and attack commands can now be separated. previously The command for "shot" and "tackling" have always been on the same button, but in FIFA 09 it is possible now to assign two different keys to these commands.

Online Mode

EA now has removed the outdated Match Maker. Now it is no longer necessary to load an external program to be able to play online. Instead it is now the same system as in the NextGen consoles: The online lobby is directly included to the FIFA menu.

System requirements

The NextGeneration graphics - of course - increases the system requirements a lot. How much these requirements will be is not clear yet, because the game is still in development and EA still tries to improve the graphic performance more and more.

If you have a high-end graphics card as the GeForce 8800 and 3 GB of RAM, you don't have to worry, you will be able to play the game in full details.

If you have a rather weaker PC you can adjust the level of details and lower it step by step. It's possible to set it to the FIFA 08 level. So if the game is not running fast enough, just switch of some details, and you can play FIFA 09, too.

Conclusion (PC Version)

The PC version makes a big step forward. Because of the Next Generation graphics it looks really great, the gameplay is similar to the Next-Gen consoles. In short: The game is just fun, it plays out different and looks different than the predecessor. FIFA 09 has no reason to hide, EA has done a great job.

I look forward to the Games Convention where we can have a look at the game again.

they're using ps3s rather than 360s at the event. is that mean ps3 will be the best for fifa09? maybe they have fixed the frame rate issue on ps3?

@lanze07:
I don't want to dissapoint you about the new game, but it's just wrong, that they built the game up from zero. The graphics are overall only slightly improoved. Look, the stadium and the crowds still lok exactly the same, they didn't changed anything here. The only thing that looks like next-gen are players, but even they don't have the same quality as on xbox360 or ps3. So when you're playing 09 you'll likely see more last-gen stuff than next-gen stuff.

@Ultra_Blue:
In my opinion this article is way to optmistic.
So don't expect to get the same excitement the authour had.

GenOval, I dont know, mate, but I wrote with DaKaTotal, and he said it really is like that. But we'll have to wait till september for demo...

Yeah the game might be like the screens, but even these screens haven't such awsome graphics.
Sure the playermodel looks fine, but look at the whole environment... pixelated 2D Crowd, 2D photographers... what is this? Are we living in 1998?
Even the playermodel isn't on the same standart as in the next-gen versions. So I really can't understand why everybody's saying the graphics are so unbelievable good.

Оk, mate, but tell me, when you play, and you're deep in the game, do you look at the crowd and the photographers? Isn't the PITCH the most important part of it? :)

It isn't wrong to build up the game from zero. Because it is not possible to convert the game 1:1 from Xbox or PS3. If you convert it, it will run on NO PC...

The Playstation 3 has faster components which are specified for computer games. PC hardware is used for working and gaming. It does not exist any personal computer which is as powerful as Playstation 3 or Xbox360!

So EA have to build the game up from zero. They have to write it for PC components. Otherwise you will have utopian system requirements.

Believe me, the player models are looking very realistic, the faces are great, and have even a better colour than the faces in PS3. That the stadium enviroment is missing... ok, that's not so nice, and yes, it looks a bit "old"... but in 90% of the game you look on the pitch, and not into the stadium...

Furthermore EA will continue working on the graphic, so I'm sure that the stadium and crowds will be NextGen next year, too....

The guys told us, that the PS3 and Xbox360 version are completely similar.

Yeah, I actually do look at them, because you see them in nearly every camera angle. and in all the cutscenes.

A game like FIFA also needs things like atmosphere and an authentic environment, but how could you have things like these with these ugly 2D crowds and stuff? I mean why are there no fans or supporters, why are there all the white emotionless guys who don't even resemble human beeings? For the early 2000s or the late nineties these crowds would have been acceptable, but oh, we have 2008 now... It's not that this would be some kind of current-gen, no the point is that they are really last-gen, outdated technology. And yes when did we have this type of spectators the first time... 2001 and they got redeveloped in 2006 I think... Well, it's "okay" if they are in 2D, but why are they so pixelated, there isn't even an illusion of 3D people, so why couldn't they at least improove the 2D fshs for the crowds, it's just...
There's no excuse for this, really no excuse.

Great screens you found, thanks mate!

They confirm what we saw in the F4F-Pics before they were updated to black screens. They really have a nice quality, so thanks again!

Yeah PCs are more powerful! :) The thing with consoles is that they have no upgrades and have their special structure which is not like that in PCs; which makes developing games easier. If games are built for PCs from ground and up they will be better the console ones, due to the powerful components that get released every year unlike the >5 year cycle of consoles.
