I think is better if we just have threads for the games we care about instead of having everything here with all the games and consoles together. I dont care about PS2 or xbox :p

E3 2004: Colin McRae Rally 2005 skids in to E3 2004 enjoy!

Codies showing off latest rally stormer on PS2 and Xbox

Colin McRae Rally has become one of those once-a-year sequel generators, but at least Codemasters always has enough fresh ideas to keep us keen. This time around, CMR 2005 boasts a full online play mode for both PS2 and Xbox - a first for the series on console.
The new game is set to feature rally events set in 9 countries, a claim of over 300 stages in career mode and new and classic cars including the (deep breath) Volkswagen Golf MK5, Toyota Celica VVTLi, Lancia Stratos, Alfa Romeo 147 GTA, Alfetta GTV Turbodelta, Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII, Peugeot 206, 205 T16 Evo2 and VW Beetle Rsi.

Codemasters has also crammed in loads more graphical detail, even down to trees that shed leaves when you prang your expensive rally car into them. Don't do that too often though - you'll never win anything!

Screen Shots enjoy!

E3 2004: Battlefield 2 Twin-Shot Explosion

A pair of stunning screens from Digital Illusions' sequel

Battlefield 2 is looking, in a word, incredible, and we're in little doubt that with the original masterpiece Battlefield 1942 proving so incredibly popular that Digital Illusions' full-blown sequel will be a smash hit when it arrives next year. New screenshots from the title are quite simply delicious.
We're already drooling at the thought of Battlefield gameplay (albeit revamped gameplay; imagine 100-plus players!) with entirely new technology that amongst other things promises destructible scenery for concrete- and tree-flying action. Additional features include a Commander Mode, which allows players to act the general and sit back and direct assaults of team mates.

E3 2004: Call Of Duty: United Offensive - Hands-On

Tally ho for a full playtest of the B-17 bomber mission

Call of Duty was hands down the best first-person shooter of last year, so when we had a chance to check out the freshly announced expansion, United Offensive, you can bet we started clucking like the sad CoD junkies that we really are.
Two missions were playable at E3, the first chronicling the epic Russo-German battle at Kursk, the largest tank battle the world have ever seen before the Gulf War - and perhaps we might tantalise you with some details on that one another time.

However it would be remiss of us in our capacity as members of Her Majesty's Gaming Press not to give you the complete low down on the spectacular new B-17 mission which immediately caught our eye. "What?" We hear you cry, "No way." But "yes way" we say, you heard us right, CoD: United Offensive takes to the skies for one of the first missions from the British campaign which is actually based inside a B-17 bomber. Don't believe us? Well check out those screenshots, they do not lie.

One of the first things you notice once you take to the air is that the B-17's flying around you in close formation are awash with British roundel markings. Surely some mistake? Well actually no, as the United Offensive team have based the level in a bunch of B-17s which the US lent the British government to fly in some of the first rather ill-advised daylight bombing raids of the war. Marvellous!

The inside of the B-17 is awash with amazing detail even down the very levers and wires which run through the air frame, but there's scarcely time to notice before the first waves of ME-109s and Focke Wolf's start to attack. With your pilot's voice screaming "Bandits at six o'clock" it's time to mount the machine guns and for the first few minutes you're constantly hopping in between tail, belly and dorsal turrets to throw up a curtain of lead at the incoming Nazi fighters. Lead them just right and you'll be rewarded by spectacular explosions as they are quite literally shot down in flames.

Yet gunnery is only the half of it. The B-17 was known as the Flying Fortress but it's still susceptible to sustained attack and around us some of our fellow formation flyers started to wither under the constant attention of the German fighters. Suddenly bloody great holes started to appear in our own fuselage and we had to dash across the bodies of fallen gunners, to grab an extinguisher and put out the flames. Then it was back to the tail gun to fend off further fighter attacks.

As we approached the target, triple-A started to pepper the skies and while the fighter attack relented a little, disaster suddenly struck! The bomb bay doors were jammed. Another dash from the tail-end charlie gunner's position meant we had to manually crank the bomb bay doors open, but then fortunately it was a case of 'the birds are flying' as we dumped the full B-17's payload to rain down explosive destruction down onto an unfortunate German city.

You might think that was job done, but again alas not and suddenly the skipper's voice was in our ears again urging us to get the fire near the tail plane extinguished. Our damage meter now showed the B-17 looking more like a Swiss cheese than an allied bomber, but it all was too little too late and we arrived just in time to see the entire B-17's tail plane detach and gently tumble towards the ground thousands of feet below. With the skipper now giving the order to bail out, our first foray over enemy territory had come to a spectacular though rather untimely end.

Phew even writing that up now, we're almost breathless and it only remains for us to speculate that if United Offensive lives up to the splendid mission design of this sample offering, it may not just equal the original CoD, but actually surpass it. Feast your eyes and fill your boots with this fine selection of screens - we'll be bringing you even more on this one, time permitting.

Screen Shots Yum!

CM5 looks good but nowhere near beating GT4.
Call of Duty 2 is really a game I'm looking forward to, the original was imo the best war game around and probably one of the best PC games of last year and it looks like CoD2 won't disapoint.

E3 2004: Unreal Engine 3 Tech Demos Cause Shattered Jaws

Honestly, these are some of the most amazing polygons that look nice

Epic is touting its Unreal Engine 3 as a complete development solution for DirectX 9 PCs, as well as the next round of consoles. Obviously it's enormously clever at doing... you know, the complex stuff that makes games work properly, but most impressive to our shallow eyes is how flippin' gorgeous it looks.
Clearly the Unreal Engine 3 has polygons by the trillion, but to get it looking really flash, it's all about the lighting. If you know what this is all about, we salute you: "64-bit color High Dynamic Range rendering pipeline. The gamma-correct, linear color space renderer provides for immaculate color precision while supporting a wide range of post processing effects such as light blooms, lenticular halos, and depth-of-field."

The results are clear anyway - games that look more impressive than what would have passed for good CGI a few years back. Of course, it's still down to developers to create the art to make nice games, but at least this new technology should take some of the techy strife out of it.

Images yum yum-

E3 2004: Valve Stuns E3 2004 with News of Half-Life Remake

Original classic receiving Source makeover, along with Counter-Strike, TFC and Gearbox's expansion packs

Valve Software's Gabe Newell has dropped jaws during the Half-Life 2 presentation at E3 with the revelation that the developer is to release a remade version of the original Half-Life built on the Source engine.
Newell also stated that Counter-Strike is receiving the same attention, and gave onlookers a brief glimpse of golden-oldie favourite map Aztec running on Source technology. He also said that mod Team Fortress is being reworked with Source, as are Gearbox's Half-Life add-ons Opposing Force and Blue Shift.

Speaking further about these Source-powered remakes, Newell reportedly said that each product would be released commercially rather than as a free update. New versions of Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Team Fortress and the add-ons are expected to launch alongside Half-Life 2 over Steam and via retail.

However, additional reports on Newell's surprise revelations confuse things slightly as they suggest that Counter-Strike is to form the multiplayer part of Half-Life 2. OK, Deathmatch may be old hat, but we would expect at least that to be included in the package.

Our E3 team will be speaking to Valve later on today (PST obviously), and we'll take that opportunity to clear up any confusion.

E3 2004: Metal Gear Solid 3 - Hands On

A survival special with the king of the jungle

Hideo Kojima, legendary creator of the MGS series confirmed - as if any such confirmation were needed - his enduring genius at Konami's E3 event, with a full demo of Metal Gear Solid 3's new survival system yesterday.
As every fewl kno, Snake is being propelled back into the sweating jungles of the sixties in MGS 3 and Kojima-san clearly took great pleasure in demonstrating how Snake will live off the land - and up to his subtitle - in his newest adventure.

Maintaining your stamina level is going to be a vital component of the game, as without regular injections of tuck, Snake won't recover from wounds or poison as quickly and it will also have disastrous gameplay effects - seriously limiting his ability to aim weapons as he suffers from the hunger shakes. And that's not good, not good at all.

Fortunately Snake is a jungle survival expert and Kojima-san revealed he actually drew on his own boyhood experiences as a scout when designing the food and survival system.

And then to gasps of astonishment, we were propelled directly into our very first look at MGS 3 in the flesh. The area selected was bare of enemy activity, so Kojima-san was quickly on the prowl for some genuine bush tucker.

Examining his surroundings closely, Snake quickly spotted some ready sources of protein, but Kojima-san explained that animals can be either killed outright or tranquillised and caged for later consumption. Once killed they rather unusually turn into canned goods, but if stunned, they can stored in a cage which keeps them fresh. Canned food actually rots quicker than the fresh variety, so it's usually in your best interests to capture your food alive - which adds an intriguing spin to the survival premise.

Splendid, then it was time for the jungle smorgasbord and first on the menu unsurprisingly was some snake. A reticulated Indian python was first for the pot, but Kojima-san also showed how your thermal binoculars and bullet microphone could also be used to track down various jungle provender. Birds, frogs, mushrooms and even more snakes were quickly added and Kojima-san finished off by shooting down a hornet's nest with his Dragonov to add some variety to the menu.

Each foodstuff has its own yumminess rating and initially, the only way to discover its nutritional value is to actually neck it down and see how good you feel. On the inventory screen, Kojima-san rapidly stuffed Snake to the gills, washing the rather tasty python down with birds, bees, mushrooms and finally the hornet's nest itself. We idly wondered how King of the Jungle Phil Tufnell would have handled that little lot, but Snake evidently didn't find it much to his taste and as we flicked back to the game, he leant over and decorated the jungle with a massive technicolour yawn.

Still, it was a marvellous demonstration of Kojima-san's ingenious and beautifully crafted survival system, which is just one amongst the many superb features which is going to make MGS 3, a truly colossal game.

More tasty selections from the MGS 3 menu will be served up shortly. Be sure to quiz our server about future specials.

Here is another version about the stolen MGS 3 demo.

2004: Exclusive: Konami Rocked By Metal Gear Solid 3 Theft

Wily youths beat hapless E3 security to make off with priceless Kojima demo disk!

Konami was in turmoil today following the shock theft of a Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater demo disk from its booth at E3 2004. This unfortunate incident, which has raised immediate concerns over potential piracy of the triple-A product, came on the back of a hugely successful showcase of the title in front of the world's press.
The theft took place late Thursday afternoon, as the second day of the show was wrapping up. Metal Gear Solid 3 is playable for the very first time at E3 2004 and has attracted huge queues of eager gamers since the Los Angeles show opened on Wednesday.
The game was running on PlayStation 2 hardware at the show, each console housed in a protective plastic casing and monitored by personnel for security purposes. But in spite of these precautions, the perpetrators, according to one eye-witness speaking exclusively to CVG, were able to make off with the code with relative ease.
"I saw two young men, around 19-20 years old suddenly pop open the plastic casing around the demo PS2," the eye-witness told us. "Within seconds they had wrenched the disk from the console and were running for the exit!"
Our eye-witness immediately informed staff on the Konami booth what had happened, but by this time the criminals had apparently made their escape.
This theft is undoubtedly a blow to Konami, and it is likely chief developer Hideo Kojima will be less than impressed that the first ever playable code was so easily swiped on its first public demonstration. It is currently unknown what steps the Japanese company will take, if any, to investigate how this theft took place and how to deal with the code theft; a company representative was unavailable at the time of writing.
On a more positive note, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater was easily one of the games of E3 2004, its playable debut - and astonishing new trailer - met with waves of enthusiasm from attendees.
And all Metal Gear fans should make sure they check back next week when we'll be bringing you a massive exclusive interview with Hideo Kojima himself, where he talks on why we won't be seeing a more traditional Metal Gear Solid title on PSP, why the Japanese games industry is in crisis, and we exclusively reveal whether or not Kojima-san is a snake eater himself.
