Difficulty?

Is it just me or is this game quite difficult?

I'm in my first season with leeds, played 6 preseason games and won them all convinvingly.
Then when the championship starts, i loose 5/6 and win 1 games as a start.... i can't seem to get the correct formula going. I was even tipped by the bookies to gain promotion, and now i'm in the relegation zone, with everyone dissatisfied....
Have no idea where to go... we're loosing every game!

and yes this is my 1st time playing a football manager game

FM 2008 is much more easier IMO.
Do keep in mind, though, that Leeds isn't exactly the easiest club when you're just starting with FM.

hmmm... so do you propose i start out with my favourite team, say Arsenal?
i thought it would take the fun out of the game by starting at the top level, and not getting the chance to be challenged and feel the joy of promotion etc.... but it seems i have no other choice now. I can't win!

is there no difficulty setting in the game at all?

nope, no such thing. I guess trying will an average/lower league club is what you could call "difficultly setting".
Oh, and theres a "hide player stats" checkbox or something like that in the menus, so this you could say is something that makes things a lot more easy (since you can, if you wish, go talent hunting without using any scouts). Tbh as a pretty old CM/FM player, I'd hate such a thing.
I havent started a game with a top range club since.. CM01/02. And most of the times I start from Div2 or less. It's a lot harder, but it's much much more rewarding. And with the possibility of getting a brand new stadium (even tho I havent actually seen it my self happen), and board takeovers, its even more do-able now because after some point you are going to get a more deserving to your club owner, which means enough money... It was impossible in FM06 for example to make a good team for ever out of.. Avelino for example, since the club would eventually have to sell all their good players or even be unable to offer them decent contracts.

yeah that's exactly what i've been doing with FIFA games. However, its so much easier to develop YOUR skills, than develop 20 different player's skills individualy to make them start winning.

So, if i'm not winning... do i just go through the relegation process (chances are i'll be fired anywayz), or do i just attempt to change my tactics every game until i find something that works?

If you haven't played any management game before, it's indeed better to start with an big club like Arsenal, to get used to the game. Perhaps if you're more used to the game you can try a lower league club.

It's not good to change tactics every game IMO, better try one tactic for atleast a few games in a row and hope your club strikes a lucky goal and snatch a win. Sometimes just that's enough to get your team to work again.

yeah, tho comparing FIFA with FM isnt exactly ideal. You need to work on your tactics, and that doesnt mean just change arrows and positions, you need to have a general idea of how you want to play, and accordingly set your team/player mentality and always the success of that depends on the quality and style the player you use in each position. You could be using a player that has higher avg performance but doesnt help your team perform the same as good as someone else that fits the team style more. On top of all that you need to have a good training schedule that doesnt put too much load (cause later on in the season your players, unless you make heavy use of rotation, will get tired and wont perform the same) and at the same time helps those who can develop, actually develop their skills. And on top of all that, you need to do scouting, esp as a small team, because you will find many good bargains.

ok yeah thanx 4 the advice.
I'm getting somewhere atleased, but I still haven't got the game completely figured out yet. I can win 6-0 at home one game, and then lose 3-0 away to a team at the bottom of the table, with the exact same formation.
But i'm guessing it's the specific combinations of of tactical options that i choose should be specific for each team we play.

Biggest problem so far is that i concede at an average of 1.4 goals per game, which isn't great for a team with high ambitions.....
anywayz... looking forward to FM08 then...
