....my year-old E6550 2GB Vista PC is, if anything, slower on startup and less responsive than my six-year-old A64+ single-core 256MB Ubuntu old PC.....

Windows "speed" can't be compared to Linux. For the most part, Linux loads up faster(even on older machines...those are what Linux is meant to be used on) and is more responsive than XP so there's no chance for Vista to compete there.

p.s. unless you've got a fairly modern system with more than 3GB RAM...

Most used Linux Distr. are opensource/free. so the Linux part at the very least isnt accurate.

I'm pretty sure my grandpa still has Windows 98, and a 56k dialup modem.

...You are right tho about it being heavier than it should, thats why 7 is supposed to be lighter (like i mentioned before)

What does that mean? Does it mean that it will take 0.05 seconds to open a software application win Windows 7 rather than 0.25 seconds in Windows VISTA?

After reading a bit about Windows 7, it seems like nothing more than Windows VISTA Service Pack 1. It may be worth it to upgrade if you're using XP*, but if you've already got VISTA it doesn't appear to be worth it at all.

*but then again, mainstream support for all versions of Windows XP will continue at least until April 14, 2009.
