Dear EA, PC patch ruins the game and here is why...

Dear EA Fifa developpers,

I understand it is a lot of work to patch all the different versions of your game in the world, I also thank you for the roster update you provide as a novelty this year, since previous years the fifa gamers had to rely on third party editors and enthousiasts, often people from your very own database team that do this for nothing in their own free time, and now you are providing this freely.

I am one of those enthousiasts, in the community I am known as Billy1969 ( http://users.skynet.be/Billy1969 ) , I make gameplay patches, sound packs and roster updates for the Fifa series of games, and have done so for many years.

I don't have the pretention to act as a spokesperson for the Fifa Community, but I wanted to share my findings asap with you so you could , if you wish so, act accordingly and make right an unintended wrong you caused by patching the PC version of Fifa07. If other editors and patches want to express their findings please do so, I'm only one voice of many I think.

I was looking forward to the first roster update, it would mean a considerable gain of time for me and the other editors if we didn't have to update the fifa.db ourselves anymore, and despite the problems to get the patch released and tested, I am a patient person, I understand the difficulties of releasing something bugfree and properly tested (although on a much inferior scale than EA of course), but the patch you released effectively ruined the PC version.

Why? Let me explain myself. All editors and patchers of the PC version, myself included, expected the patch to include an updated fifa.db file. To my surprise the fifa.db remains untouched but you released the updated rosters and new players in a new file pc_cl.bin instead!

I see the reason behind this method, obviously this was an attempt at not having to let people restart their careers when updating, but by doing so, as I said, you have broken the strengths (adaptability) of the PC version.

All third party patches, past and future, that makes the PC version the closest to reality as possible have been made incompatible by not updating the fifa.db file.

Almost all of them make slight changes to the fifa.db, like for example assigning flags, shoes, new third and keeper kits, new youth players, and so much more when importing them. Now, with the pc_cl.bin present, which is also not in regular .db format I am absolutely convinced the game will crash with any third party patch unless they are applied to the first unpatched version of Fifa07 (which at the same time will retain it's bugs and become incompatible with the online mode)

I could go on for a long time giving examples of what has been made incompatible, but I think you get the point, the only way to fix and undo this is to release a new patch that has an actualised version of the fifa.db and gets rid of the pc_cl.bin, if not, well then there is no point anymore in getting the PC version.

I am really dissapointed by all of this, and I hope you can fix this situation. Should you need more information on what's become incompatible, please contact me, thanks.

Stephan De Mol aka Billy1969.

I agreed to post this because I totally agreed with the point raised in it and believe the people of this board should be able to read what the new EA patch is like before they decide whether or not to download it themselves.

Yeah Billy is right there! You just cannot edit or insert anything in the game if you wanna use the EA Patch cause then the game crashes as the team names will not appear. So basically you have to decided. For those who only use home and away kits they can use it as nothing is wrong with Kit Raptor and those kits but to insert 3rd kits or GK kits that are not in the game then the game crashes. I have decided NOT to use it since i need to update the game from time to time. I just hope some good soul will update the roster for us as it is in a bit of a mess!

Regards

Simon

Well I guess EA's not really unhappy about these circumstances. They don't like their game being edited, that's become evident, they have never done anything to make editing easier, though they could without effort. They want people to buy the game and then buy the next year's game because the teams in the leagues, the kits, the rosters etc are not up-to-date anymore. With their own patches EA offers an alternative for a lot of people who don't want the effort of searching for downloads here and elsewhere. These people are satisfied with the official patches which gives them the opportunity to update their game until the next one is released.

So the editor's problem is:
The majority finds it easier to download the official patch because they don't want to search forums and fifa fansites for the right patch. And the majority doesn't trust editors because they fear downloading stuff that makes their game crash or contains bad/wrong stuff.
The majority rules. EA wants a bestseller, so it wants the majority to be happy, not the editors and the people who download their stuff who are, unfortunately, a minority.
The majority is phlegmatic and anxious, so EA takes them by the hand and gives it what it wants. The majority is easily satisfied. "Oh, one new league? I'll buy it!". The majority doesn't care about gameplay details, third kits or "unknown" teams like Steaua Bucuresti. The majority cares about Barca, Milan and chelsea. Honestly, the majority even cares about what player is on the cover!
That's business. Editing will always be a fight against ea. They bring out new templates, we make new kits. They change the structure of files, editors make new editing programs rhat can cope with that, etc etc
Sad but true. Just do yourself a favour and don't believe that EA wants to help you enjoy the game in any way they didn't intend you did.

I am afraid you are rigth August! If we look at EA of fifa in particular they never made it easy for the editors. I just wish that one day they give us a great Fifa game with all stuff included so the editors do not have much work. Why they never include 2generations kits instead of the ones? Why they never boderd to create some adboards atleast for the famous teams? And many more. Really Sad!

Why is the method that EA have chosen to deliver these updates such a problem?? The PC_CL.BIN contains four 'tables' of data that completely replace those in FIFA.DB - teamwrite, teamplayerlinks, player and version (although the latter might not be relevant as a replacement, simply an indication of what level the data will be at with the update applied) - which really doesn't seem to be that big an issue. The format is a little different, but almost identical to that used for manager/tournament mode files, or the squads file come to that. All we need is for the relevant tool makers to update their programs to cope with handling the PC_CL.BIN data (both reading and writing) and we are good to go. Yes, it throws things into a little confusion for a short while, but it is hardly going to 'ruin' anything.

Well done Billy, good letter.

Isn't there a way a copying those values from that new PC_CL.BIN file into the fifa.db?

Hello , I avoid all those problems by maintaining more data folders and more folders in doc and settings .
If I want to use a patch , i install it in an original data folder , and if I want to play online I rename the original name to "data" and call the other ones whatever I like.Same story with fifa07 folder in docs and settings.
It is the only way now to avoid crashes and none playability on online games.
So now I have 4 data folders in my fifa07 directory, only 1 called "data" off course.

yeah, this is your answer. backup your data folder, install patch keep a second version of the data folder.

then have 2 shortcuts on your desktop:

1) "fifa07 online" which runs a batch file/other that checks your official data directory is named "data" before it opens fifa and renames it if it isn't

2) "fifa07 mod" which does the opposite.

so you would have 2 folders, an automatic renaming thing that is run before fifa opens depending on how you want to play and everyone is happy.
