FC Internazionale Milano coach José Mourinho may be hoping to face Vitória SC in the UEFA Champions League group stage, but the Portuguese side must first overcome the significant barrier of an in-form FC Basel 1893 team.

'Important tie'

Mourinho knows Guimarães coach Manuel Cajuda from his Portuguese Liga days, and announced his desire for a reunion on Monday. Cajuda light-heartedly retorted that if Mourinho meets 'Uncle' Manuel "he is going to lose", but the 57-year-old is acutely aware that his team must first negotiate the sizeable obstacle of Basel in the third qualifying round. "The players come into this important tie focused on victory," he said. "We have struggled to get here but now we are ready to rewrite the club's history. Our goal is to win and give the supporters another reason to celebrate."

Basel wary

The festivities in the north-western town of Guimaraes have barely died down since May when the side sealed third place in the Liga and a shot at booking a UEFA Champions League berth for the first time. It is a rise that certainly has not escaped Basel coach Christian Gross as he gears up for the opening leg at Estádio D. Afonso Henriques. "They are a technically very strong, and while they caused an upset last season in Portugal, it was well deserved," said the former Tottenham Hotspur FC manager. "We should be warned: they are a strong outfit. It will be important to be fully focused right from the first minute. We have to be compact as I am sure that it will be a tremendously intense match."

Fitness worries

Basel are no strangers to the big stage, having taking the sizeable scalp of Juventus as they reached the second group stage of this competition in 2002/03. Few players remain from those heady days, but a new generation of youngsters are emerging, led by the likes of Valentin Stocker and Ivan Ergić. Neither were in action last weekend, rested alongside Jürgen Gjasula and Benjamin Huggel as Basel warmed up for their trip to Portugal by claiming a fourth win in five games, 4-0 against FC Vaduz to move second in the Swiss Super League. All four players are likely to feature against Guimarães, along with Eren Derdiyok who has recovered from stomach muscle problems.

Guimarães ready

Cajuda does have fitness concerns, however, as defender Sereno is a doubt with a left knee injury, though Luís Filipe and Nuno Assis are both likely to feature after joining from SL Benfica last week. "All the players want to impress and everybody wants to take part in this tremendous task," said the Guimarães coach. "I am convinced we are going to qualify for the next stage and the players are ready for it; they must enjoy the moment. I said the team would be stronger and we have improved since last season." Beat Basel and Guimarães could make Mourinho regret getting what he asked for.

----------------------------------------------------

FC Basel 1893 are preparing for what may be their "most important match of the season" – when they can beat Vitória SC to return to the UEFA Champions League group stage for the first time since 2003.

All or nothing

The two sides drew 0-0 in the third qualifying round first leg in Guimaraes on 13 August and Basel are determined to make home advantage tell in Wednesday's return at St. Jakob-Park. "This may be the most important match of our season," said midfielder Ivan Ergić, who hopes to overcome a bruised right ankle to play. "We all know what it means to be in the Champions League."

'Huge opportunity'

Basel lead the Swiss Super League after seven matches and Benjamin Huggel, who scored in Saturday's 4-3 victory over Neuchâtel Xamax FC, wants to take that eye-catching form into Europe. "This is a huge opportunity for us," he said. "The Champions League is the highest stage in European club football and it would be great to be part of it." However, coach Christian Gross anticipates a tough encounter and, after conceding three goals at the weekend, is wary of Vitória's attacking threat. "We can't just go forward without thinking how technically gifted they are," he said. "We have to be brave, show confidence at all times and stay focused."

'Make history'

While a 1-0 win would be enough for the Swiss champions, a score draw would take Guimarães, third in last season's Portuguese Liga, into the group stage for the first time. This second leg is an occasion Manuel Cajuda's men are ready to rise to. "We know the importance of this match," the coach said. "It is a unique opportunity to make history and I have felt my players' confidence. I too am very confident in this team. It will be a different game from the first leg, because somebody has to score. I am expecting a different opponent as well, one more determined to keep the ball. It could be harder for us, yet it could also suit us."

Possible weakness

Of Basel's potential defensive frailties, Cajuda added: "We know Basel shipped three goals in their last game but they have been scoring a lot too. I hope it's a good sign for Vitória anyway." Guimarães' cause is helped by the news that striker Douglas Oliveira should be available after shaking off a groin complaint. Arnolin Gregory is also expected to play despite taking a knock in the 1-1 season-opening draw with Vitória FC on Friday, but Nuno Assis (groin) and Sereno (knee) miss out.

Nuno Assis and Sereno are out, Assis would be a great help, he has experience in Champions League, Sereno is just the best defender in Vitória... so hope to see some Fajardo, João Alves and Desmarets in action, and hopefully achieve a victory.

0-0

Guimaraes played bad, there was 2 penaltys not assinalated, and Desmarets misses a great opportunity to score at the end of the match. Great result for what Guimaraes played. I hope that with Sereno and Nuno Assis they can get at least 1 goal at Switzerland.

Assinalated? xD

Just say "the ref didn't point 2 penalties to Vitoria" or something.

And yeah, Vitoria can complain about the refs here and there, but the match was totally even and maybe the draw is fair.

Basel is in-form? Vitoria out of form could even against them. I'm pretty sure Vitoria is going through, a goal there will clearly make Basel go nuts, Vitoria's defensive line is quite solid.

Ok, thanks... In portuguese i usually say " O Arbitro não assinalou .. " so i said "assinalated"... Does this word even exist ?

No. Careful with the translation of our language :P

(It's pretty tricky actually)

P.S: And it's good to see more portuguese people around :D

I thought the word exists, sorry then, my mistake.

Returning to the theme of the topic.

I believe in the triumph of Vitória in Basel, Sereno and Nuno Assis are great help to the team, Fajardo, Desmarets, Nuno Assis and João Alves are "deadly" ( exagerated word ).

Especially Desmarets and N.Assis. Fajardo and J.Alves haven't found their form yet, sadly.

Yeah, I'm confident as well. Let's see in a week :)

It's today, Nuno Assis and Sereno are still injured... Let's see if Guimaraes make history, I think they have potential to do that.

In part, i think that's the best, because they have more opportunity in UEFA Cup, and if they got far is better for the Portuguese Ranking in European competitions.. But is a rare opportunity to make history in Guimarães, so i hope they can get a victory and realize their dream.

Ahahaha Don't we all?

Though I'm kinda divided, I want them to win and then get a fcked up group (like they probably will if they win because of their ranking) and then get hammered by the likes of Barcelona or United.

Of course, that wouldn't be good for Portugal, they would bring either zero or very few points for Portugal.

However it'd be pretty cool to know what UEFA would say in case the "flying chairs" phenomena that so often happens in Guimarães' stadium occurs.

P.S: Cajuda might be a decent coach but he's a moron. :mrt1:

It always bothered me. Why don't you support Vitoria, Rui?

Because I hate them, they're like animals... I bet I speak for many other people when I say it's a nightmare to watch a game in their stadium, at least I already had some nightmares, they should just play with themselves, and have 4 walls around the city because they just can't live with other people...

But, well, that was a pretty f*cked up loss, with that goal right at the end, to bad... :D

^ haha, pwned.

Anyway, what happened yesterday was a total disgrace. Vitoria was ROBBED.

First game - 2 penalties for Vitoria that the ref didn't mark.
Second game - Goal by Vitoria in 88' that would give 2-2...outruled by no reason.

Now think about it, who hosted Euro 2008? Who was the only switz team with chances of qualifying to the CL? What nationality is FIFA's president?

Shame on you, shame..
